Far field acoustic pressure from the evolution and interaction of three-dimensional vortex filament is calculated numerically. A vortex ring is a typical example of the three-dimensional vortex filament. An elliptic vortex ring emits a strong sound signal due to significant distortion and stretching of the vortec filament. The far field acoustic pressure is linearly dependent on the third time derivatives of the vortex positions. A numerical scheme of high resolution is employed to describe in detail the elliptic vortex ring motions which ar highly nonlinear. Descretized vortex filaments are interpolated by using a parametric blending function to remove a possible numerical instability. The distorted vortex filament, owing to the self-induced and the induced velocity from the other vortex segments, is redistributed at each time step. The accuracy and efficiency of the scheme are validated by comparisons with the analytic solution of circular vortex ring interaction.
The flow and acoustic fields due to a vortex ring interaction with a rigid sphere are simulated numerically. The flow field is regarded as three-dimensional inviscid and incompressible. The vorticity is assumed to be concentrated inside the finite core of vortex filament. The vortex filament curve, described by parabolic blending curve function, is used to effectively solve the modified Biot-Savart equation. The interaction between a vortex ring and a rigid sphere using the parabolic blending curve is calculated. The trajectory of the vortex ring is obtained with several different initial positions between the ring and the sphere. The force variations acting on the sphere are calculated by using the boundary integral method. Finally, we can also obtain the acoustic signals at the far field observation positions from the force variations acting on the rigid surface. We can find that the dipole axis of the directivity patterns are rotated during the interacting phenomena.
This paper describes the prediction of aerodynamic performance and wake of HAWT in normal and yawed flow operation using potential based methods. In order to analyze aerodynamic performance of wind turbine WINFAS program is used, which is based on VLM(Vortex Lattice Method) and CVC(Constant vorticity contour) Free wake model. Some problems of CVC vortex filament method are investigated arid to improve these problems vortex ring wake are introduced in behalf of CVC vortex filament. The prediction results using the vortex lattice wake are compared to experimental data.
A study of three-dimensional unsteady incompressible flow past elliptic disk with aspect ratio 3 is presented. Numerical visualization using the vortex filament method was performed at Reynolds number of 20,000 on the basis of the minor diameter, the random walk method was used to calculate viscous diffusion effect. We suggest 3 stages about the wake development according to its structures, stability and motions and described the characteristics of each stages. The structure of the elliptic wake is more complicate and unstable than the wake behind a circular disk.

The treatment of rotor wake has been a critical issue in the field of the rotor aerodynamics. This paper presents a new free wake model for the unsteady analysis for a wind turbine. A blade-wake-tower interaction is major source of unsteady aerodynamic loading and noise on the wind turbine. However, this interaction can not be considered in conventional free wake model. Thus, the free wake model named Finite Vortex Element (FVE hereafter) was devised in order to consider the interaction effects. In this new free wake model, the wake-tower interaction was described by dividing one vortex filament into two vortex filaments, when the vortex filament collided with a tower. Each divided vortex filaments were remodeled to make vortex ring and horseshoe vortex to satisfy Kelvin's circulation theorem and Helmholtz's vortex theorem. This model was then used to predict aerodynamic load and wake geometry for the horizontal axis wind turbine. The results of the FVE model were compared with those of the conventional free wake model and the experimental results of SNU wind tunnel test and NREL wind tunnel test under various inflow velocity and yaw condition. The result of the FVE model showed better correlation with experimental data. It was certain that the tower interaction has a strong effect on the unsteady aerodynamic load of blades. Thus, the tower interaction needs to be taken into account for the unsteady load prediction. As a result, this research shows a potential of the FVE for an efficient and versatile numerical tool for unsteady loading analysis of a wind turbine.
A critical issue in the field of the rotor aerodynamics is the treatment of the wake. The wake is of primary importance in determining overall aerodynamic behavior, especially, a wind turbine blade includes the unsteady air loads problem. In this study, the wake generated by blades are depicted by a free wake model to analyse unsteady loading on blade and a new free wake model named Finite Vortex Element(FVE hereafter) is devised in order to include a wake-tower interact ion. In this new free wake model, blade-wake-tower interaction is described by cutting a vortex filament when the filament collides with a tower. This FVE model is compared with a conventional free wake model and verified by a comparison with NREL and SNU wind tunnel model. A comparison with NREL and SNU data shows validity and effectiveness of devised FVE free wake model and an efficient.

In 1906, da Rios, a student of Leivi-Civita, wrote a master's thesis modeling the motion of a vortex in a viscous fluid by the motion of a curve propagating in $R^3$, in the direction of its binormal with a speed equal to its curvature. Much later, in 1971 Hasimoto showed the equivalence of this system with the non-linear Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation (NLS) $$q_t=i(q_{ss}+\frac{1}{2}{\mid}q{\mid}^2q$$. In this paper, we use the same idea as Terng used in her lecture notes but different technique to extend the above relation to the case of $R^3$, and obtained an analogous equation that $$q_t=i[q_{ss}+(\frac{1}{2}{\mid}q{\mid}^2+1)q]$$.
In this study, a vortex visualization method based on the vorticity magnitude is developed. One of the simplest models for a vortex is a vortex filament with the maximum vorticity on its center. The proposed method is based on the observation of this ideal distribution of vorticity magnitude. Laplacian and Hessian matrix of vorticity magnitude are tested for detecting the local maximum of vorticity magnitude. These ideas were applied to wake flow past a sphere. It was found that the Laplacian method is not able to distinguish vortices from the underlying shear layer clearly, while the Hessian matrix method does not suffer from this problem.
