Study on the effect of corrosion defects on VIV behavior of marine pipe using a new defective pipe element

  • After long-term service in deep ocean, pipelines are usually suffered from corrosions, which may greatly influence the Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) behavior of pipes. Thus, we investigate the VIV of defective pipelines. The geometric nonlinearity due to large deformation of pipes and nonlinearity in vortex-induced force are simulated. This nonlinear vibration system is simulated with finite element method and solved by direct integration method with incremental algorithm. Two kinds of defects, corrosion pits and volumetric flaws, and their effects of depth and range on VIV responses are investigated. A new finite element is developed to simulate corrosion pits. Defects are found to aggravate VIV displacement response only if environmental flow rate is less than resonance flow rate. As the defect depth grows, the stress responses increase, however, the increase of the defect range reduces the stress response at corroded part. The volumetric flaws affect VIV response stronger than the corrosion pits.

  • The anaerobic landfill leachate treatment can surmount dilution problem of high concentration landfill leachate, collect methane gas as byproduct, and treat low phosphate concentration leachate because of low nutrient salt requirement. The problems of conventional anaerobic treatment that are requirement of large reactor because of low microbial growth rate(HRT=20-30 days) and low volumetric loading rate(VLR=0.5-2.0 kg $COD/m^3\cdot day$) are able to surmount by introduction of high rate anaerobic treatment. In this study, the upflow blanket filter(UBF) which is high rate anaerobic process was applyed to the landfill leachate treatment. The acceptable volumetric loading rate and HRT were 18.23 kg $SCOD/m^3\cdot day$ and 13 hrs. SCOD removal rate was over 90% at VLR 18.23 kg $SCOD/m^3\cdot day$. The methane gas yield was $0.15 lCH_4/g$ SCOD added(at STP) at VLR 18.23 kg $SCOD/m^3\cdot day$. The solids accumulation yield was 0.40 g VSS/g COD removed.

Numerical Simulations of Cavitation Flow in Volumetric Gear Pump (회전 용적형 기어펌프의 캐비테이션 유동 해석)

  • A volumetric gear pump is often used in extensive industrial applications to provide both high pressure and sufficiently high flow rate by physical displacement of finite volume of fluid with each revolution. Template mesh function in commercial CFD software, PumpLinx, by which 3-D meshes in the complex region between rotor and housing can be readily generated was employed for 3-D flow simulations. For cavitation analysis full cavitation model was included in 3-D simulations. The results showed high pulsation in pressure and flowrate which is implicated in pump vibration and noise. A model test for cavitation visualization was conducted and the results showed good qualitative agreement with numerical prediction.

Effect of Boss Wall Thickness on Sink Mark in Injection Molding (보스 벽 두께가 사출성형의 싱크마크 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • The sink mark on boss parts is generated by the volumetric shrinkage that is caused by both the molding thickness and the boss wall thickness. The volumetric shrinkage is caused by packing pressure and its amount tends to decrease by increasing the packing pressure. The packing pressure can therefore increase the flow rate to a boss part and causes the depth of sink mark to increase. As the molding thickness and the boss wall thickness in the boss part can increase the part volume, these may yield bad solidifying and also extend the molding cycle. In this paper, both the injection molding test and the flow analysis were carried out to investigate the effect of sink mark that was generated in the boss wall thickness of injection molded products. The sink mark could also be caused by thickness ratio of boss part. For a given thickness ratio of boss, several molding process parameters such as packing pressure, packing time and melt temperature, affecting to generation of the sink mark were discussed.

  • A volumetric gear pump is often used in extensive industrial applications to provide both high pressure and sufficiently high flow rate by physical displacement of finite volume of fluid with each revolution. To better understand the unsteady flow characteristics within the pump, numerical simulations were conducted by using moving dynamic meshing (MDM) techniques in commercially available CFD software, FLUENT. The effects of rotor clearance size and rotational speed of rotor on the flow characteristics, specially the temporal variation of velocity and pressure field, which is a main source of flow noise, was investigated. The results showed that significant reverse flow is developed in the rotor clearance and that its size is one of the most important factors affecting flow characteristics and pressure pulsation.

  • The effects of temperature and initial crack length on the impact fracture behavior for the side plate material of FRP ship were investigated. And the effects of the counterpart roughness and sliding distance on the volumetric wear of same material were investigated as well. Impact fracture toughness of GF/PE composites displayed maximum value when the temperature of specimen is room temperature and $50^{\circ}C$, and with decreasing the temperature of specimen, impact fracture toughness decreased. Impact fracture energy of GF/EP composites decreased with increasing the initial crack length of specimen, and this value decreased rapidly when the temperature of specimen is lowest, $-25^{\circ}C$. It is believed that sensitivity of notch on impact fracture energy were increased with decreasing the temperature of specimen. With increasing the sliding distance, the transition sliding distance, which displayed different aspect on the friction coefficient and the volumetric wear loss, were found out. Counterpart roughness had a big influence on the wear rate at running in period, however the effect of counterpart roughness became smaller with sliding speed increase in. Volumetric wear loss were increased with increasing the applied load and the counterpart roughness.

On the Surface Moisture Availability Parameters to Estimate the Surface Evaporation (증발량 추정을 위한 지표면 가용 수분 계수)

  • In order to discuss the differences among the SMP(Surface Moisture Availability Parameter), by previous researchers on the basis of their own theoretical and empirical background, we assessed the SMP according to the soil types and volumetric soil water contents. The results are as follows. There are differences among all the five SMAPs. There's a tendency that the larger grain size, the higher value of parameters. And they divided into two groups for their value: one group has parameters with exponential function and the other with cosine and linear function. The maximum difference between the two groups appears when the volumetric soil water contents are 0.07m3m-3 for sand, 0.l1m3m-3 for loam, 0.12 for clay, and 0.13m3m-3 for silt loam. So, these differences must be considered when we estimate the surface evaporation rate. From field data, the paddy field soil around Junam reservoir is classified as a silt has high wetness, 0.56. So, the parameter obtained from the field measurement is much higher than that of Clapp and Hornberger(1978)'s Table. This study treated the SMP for a certain point of time in winter season. But if we measured the soil water contents continuously, we could obtain better time-dependent parameter. Effect of Geometric Parameters on the Performance of an Automotive Scroll Compressor Using R-134a (R-134a를 사용한 자동차용 스크롤 압축기의 스크롤 형상변화가 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study investigated the effects of geometric parameters considered on the performance of an automotive scroll compressor by assuming ideal, semi-real and real gases for R-134a. The geometric parameters were center thickness of scroll, height of scroll and the size of discharge port. Fourth-order Runge-Kutta method was applied to solve the thermodynamic equations, leaking rate equation and the equation of motion of discharge valve for ideal, semi-real, and real gases. The volumetric and adiabatic efficiencies for semi-real and real gases differed little, but those for ideal gas differed by 18% and 25% compared with those for real gas at 2,000rpm. The volumetric efficiency changed little as the design angle of scroll (${\gamma}$) changed, but the adiabatic efficiency at ${\gamma}$ of $34^{\circ}$ was higher by 2.4% than that of $147^{\circ}$ for 2,000rpm. The volumetric and adiabatic efficiencies at scroll height of 29.8mm were higher by 1.7% and 2.8% than those of 65.8mm. The volumetric efficiency changed little as the size of discharge port changed, but the adiabatic efficiency increased a little as the size of discharge port decreased.

The Effect of Media Feeding Rate on the Production of Monoclonal Antibody Production in the Fed-batch Culture of Hybridoma (하이브리도마 세포의 유가식 배양에서 배지첨가속도가 단일클론 항체 생산에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of media feeding rate on cell growth and monoclonal antibody production in the fed-batch culture ot hybridoma A4W was studied. In the batch culture, the highest specific antibody production rate was observed at the begining of the culture period but its value tended to decrease rapidly with the culture time. The final antibody concentration and volumetric productivity was 65 $\mu g$/ml and 13 mg Mab/l/day, respectively. In the fed-batch culture, the specific antibody production rate, $q_p$ rebounded sharply within a few hours after the media feeding was started and it remained high until the end of culture if the media feeding was continued. The final antibody concentration was 220 $\mu g$/ml and the volumetric productivity was 45.1 mg/l/day. Further increase in final antibody concentration was achieved by applying a modified media of which component was fortified with glucose and glutamine, hence the final antibody concentration in this case was 270 $\mu g$/ml and the volumetric productivity was 51.8 mg/lday, which is as four tinlcs as high cuixparinf! to that of batch culture.
