In this paper optimization of volume fraction distribution in a thick hollow cylinder with finite length made of two-dimensional functionally graded material (2D-FGM) and subjected to steady state thermal and mechanical loadings is considered. The finite element method with graded material properties within each element (graded finite elements) is used to model the structure. Volume fractions of constituent materials on a finite number of design points are taken as design variables and the volume fractions at any arbitrary point in the cylinder are obtained via cubic spline interpolation functions. The objective function selected as having the normalized effective stress equal to one at all points that leads to a uniform stress distribution in the structure. Genetic Algorithm jointed with interior penalty-function method for implementing constraints is effectively employed to find the global solution of the optimization problem. Obtained results indicates that by using the uniform distribution of normalized effective stress as objective function, considerably more efficient usage of materials can be achieved compared with the power law volume fraction distribution. Also considering uniform distribution of safety factor as design criteria instead of minimizing peak effective stress affects remarkably the optimum volume fractions.

A design optimization problem was formulated to minimize the volume of an RC building structure while satisfying design constraints on structural displacements under vertical, wind and seismic loads. We employed metamodel-based design optimization using design of experiments, metamodeling and optimization algorithm to circumvent the difficulty of the automation of structural analysis procedure. Especially, we proposed a design approach of repetitive design optimizations by stages with changing the side constraint values on design variables and limit values on design constraints until a satisfactory design result was obtained. Using the proposed design approach, the volume of the RC building structure has been reduced by 53.3 % compared to the initial one while satisfying all the design constraints. This design result clearly shows the validity of the proposed design approach.

Since the transportation cost takes about two thirds of the logistics cost of Korean firms, significant reduction of business logistics cost can hardly be achieved without effectively reducing the transportation cost. Although consolidated transportation has been regarded as the most promising strategy for reducing the transportation cost, it has not been successful in practice. In this paper we consider a consolidated transportation for the factories located in a limited area such as industrial complexes, where loads of various volume and weight are consolidated. We want to group the loads to assign to a truck of various size such that the total transportation cost is minimized, while the maximum volume constraint and weight constraint of each truck are satisfied. We suggest four heuristic algorithms to efficiently determine the groups of loads; and conduct a computer simulation to evaluate the performances of the algorithms.

A mathematical approach to solving the time-varying obstacle avoidance problem is pursued. The mathematical formulation of the problem is given in robot joint space(JS). View-time concept is used to deal with time-varying obstacles. The view-time is the period in which a time-varying obstacles. The view-time is the period in which a time-varying obstacle is viewed and approximated by an equivalent stationary obstacle. The equivalent stationary obstacle is the volume swept by the time-varying obstacle for the view-time. The swept volume is transformed into the JS obstacle that is the set of JS robot configurations causing the collision between the robot and the swept volume. In JS, the path avoiding the JS obstacle is planned, and a trajectory satisfying the constraints on robot motion planning is planned along the path. This method is applied to the collision-free motion planning of two SCARA robots, and the simulation results are given.
Optical interconnections are more attractive than electronic interconnections because of their higher speed, freedom from planar constraints, immunity to electromagnetic interference effects and higher interconnection capacity. Volume hologram is one of the best way to implement optical interconnections. Diffraction efficiency and crosstalk effect are very important things for ensuring independent interconnections. Recently, a general systematic method that can handle a large number of superposed volume gratings in anisotropic host material is presented. In this study for numerical analysis of diffraction, above method is programmed in general form near Bragg angle. Diffraction orders for variation of grating strength are determined by comparing with the coupled-mode method. The effects of parameter variation are considered. Parameters include vertical and azimuthal incident angle, wavelength and interaction length. Diffraction analyses are also performed for intra-mode and inter-mode diffractions.

Vehicle manufacturing plant is a typical mixed-model production system. Generally it consists of three main shops including body shop, painting shop and assembly shop in addition to engine shop. Each shop contains diverse manufacturing processes, all of which are integrated in a form of flow line. Due to the high pressure from the market requesting small-volume large variety production, production planning becomes very critical for the competitiveness of automotive industry. In order to save costs and production time, production planning system is requested to meet some designated requirements for each shop: to balance the work load in body and assembly shops, and to minimize the number of color changes in painting shop. In this context, we developed a sequencing module for a vehicle production planning system using the ILOG Solver Library. It is designed to take into account all the manufacturing constraints at a time with meeting hard constraints in body shop, minimizing the number of soft constraints violated in assembly shop, and minimizing the number of color changes in painting shop.
A GA-based optimization technique is adopted in the paper to obtain optimal future control inputs for predictive control systems. For reliable future predictions of a process, we identify the underlying process with an NNARX model structure and investigate to reduce the volume of neural network based on the Lipschitz index and a criterion. Since most industrial processes are subject to their constraints, we deal with the input-output constraints by modifying some genetic operators and/or using a penalty strategy in the GAPC. Some computer simulations are given to show the effectiveness of the GAPC method compared with the adaptive GPC algorithm.

This paper deals with an optimization approach of 3D space placement of power components under volume and thermal constraints. It consists in optimizing semiconductors positions on a heat sink by respecting the components junction temperatures and minimizing the heat sink size. The aim is to remove risks on the 3D converter components placement and ensure their effective integration before carrying out the first physical prototype. This approach is based on coupling an optimization environment with a thermal finite element simulation tool. A pre-sizing step using analytical models is performed to set the optimization computations coupled to numerical simulation.
The interaction of disk galaxies with intergalactic winds has been invoked as a possible mechanism of the generation of galactic warps. Here we discuss conditions under which intergalactic flows can be relevant for warping field galaxies. Constraints include the heating of the outer disk, the level of asymmetry in the vertical distribution of the volume gas density, the angular frequency of the warp, the symmetry of galactic warps amplitude between the approaching and receding sides of the galaxy, and the speed of the intergalactic flow whether subsonic or supersonic. These constraints are discussed in this paper in reference to the proposal of Lopez-Corredoira et al. that warps can be a natural consequence of accretion flows onto the disk.
This paper describes computational algorithms and a computer program for optimum determinations of wire conductor sizes of radial or tree-type distibution lones with given constraints. Here, The objective function is defined as the total summation of the volume or weight of respective conductor materials required for buildingup the entire distributing system. Four categories of constraints are applied to the obiective function. That is, on the respective load points constraint is imposed by a specified voltage drop limit, and the respective line elements are capable of carrying the current safely(safety current) and also must maintain the minimum thickness in viewpoint of mechanical strength and legal requirements. And finally, the conductor sizes have to be selected among the standardized size levels of the products. These kinds of optimization problems cannot be solved by the ordinary optimization tediniques such as the Linear Programming Method, SUMT Technique, etc. This paper, therefore, successfully devised the powerful alorithms to solve the problem, using the particular properties or characteristics ingerent to the radial or tree-type distribution system. The computer program developed from the algorithms was applied to several sample systems and shown to be exact and very efficient.
