Pressure-volume-temperature gauging method experiment using liquid nitrogen under microgravity condition of parabolic flight

  • Measuring an exact amount of remaining cryogenic liquid propellant under microgravity condition is one of the important issues of rocket vehicle. A Pressure-Volume-Temperature (PVT) gauging method is attractive due to its minimal additional hardware and simple gauging process. In this paper, PVT gauging method using liquid nitrogen is investigated under microgravity condition with parabolic flight. A 9.2 litre metal cryogenic liquid storage tank containing approximately 30% of liquid nitrogen is pressurized by ambient temperature helium gas. During microgravity condition, the inside of the liquid tank becomes near-isothermal condition within 1 K difference indicated by 6 silicon diode sensors vertically distributed in the middle of the liquid tank. Helium injection with higher mass flow rate after 10 seconds of the waiting time results in successful measurements of helium partial pressure in the tank. Average liquid volume measurement error is within 11% of the whole liquid tank volume and standard deviation of errors is 11.9. As a result, the applicability of PVT gauging method to liquid propellant stored in space is proven with good measurement accuracy.

Effect of Heat Treatment on the Mechanical Properties of P/M High Speed Steel (분말 고속도로공구강의 기계적 특성에 미치는 열처리 영향)

  • A P/M high speed steel of ASP 30 grade was austenitized, gas quenched and tempered at various conditional. The mechanical properties such as hardness, bend strength and fracture toughness were evaluated after heat treatment. The microstructure and the type and volume fraction of carbides were analyzed by an optical microscope, image analyzer and XRD. The primary carbides after the heat treatment were MC and $M_6C$ type. The volume of the total carbide varied from 10 to 15% depending on the austenitizing and tempering temperature. The tempering temperature for maximum hardness was at around 52$0^{\circ}C$. But the maximum bend strength was obtained at about 55$0^{\circ}C$. The fracture toughness was largely affected by the presence of retained austenite after gas quenching and secondary hardening during tempering.

  • Gas hydrates are ice-like crystalline compounds that form under low temperature and elevated pressure conditions. Although hydrate formation can pose serious flow-assurance problems in the gas pipelines or facilities, gas hydrates present a novel means for natural gas storage and transportation with potential applications in a wide variety of areas. An important property of hydrates that makes them attractive for use in gas storage and transportation is their very high gas-to-solid ratio. In addition to the high gas content, gas hydrates are remarkably stable. The main barrier to development of gas hydrate technology is the lack of an effective method to mass produce gas hydrate in solid form. The first objective of this study is investigating the characteristics of gas hydrate formation related to several factors such as pressure, temperature, water-to-storage volume ratio, concentration of SDS, heat transfer and whether stirred or not respectively. And the second objective is clarifying the relation between the formation efficiency and each factor in order to find the proper way or direction to improve the formation performance.

  • Nanocrystalline hydrogenated silicon (nc-Si : H) thin films were deposited at room temperature by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD): a mixture of SiH₄ and H₂ gas was introduced into the evacuated reaction chamber. When the H₂ gas flow rate was low, the density of Si-H₃ bonds was high in the films. On the other hand, when the H₂ gas flow rate was high, e.g., 100 sccm, a large number of Si-H bonds contributed to the passivation of the surface of the large volume of Si nanocrystallites. The relative fraction of the Si-H₃ and Si-H₂ bonds in the amorphous matrix varied sensitively with the H₂ gas flow rate. The variation was associated with the change in the intensity as well as the wavelength of the main PL peaks, indicating the change in the total volume as well as the size of the Si nanocrystallites in the films.

  • Natural gas is converted in to LNG by chilling and liquefying the gas to the temperature of $-162^{\circ}C$, when liquefied, the volume of natural gas is reduced to 1/600th of its standard volume. This gives LNG the advantage in transportation. The pressure dorp of the cascade liquefaction cycle was investigated and simulated using HYSYS software. The simulation results showed that the pressure drop in the LNG heat exchanger is set to 50 kPa considering the increase in the compressor work of cryogenic cascade liquefaction cycle.

  • Constant volume combustion chamber has been designed to investigate diesel spray characteristics with Common-Rail injection system to realize high pressure injection. In this study, two methods of measurements, Schlieren shadowgraphy and Mie scattering imaging method ate applied experimentally to study spray form and liquid phase zone in high pressure, high temperature conditions. Diesel fuel is injected at the point which ignited mixture gas is completely burned. The effect of injection pressure, injector hole diameter, ambient gas temperature and density are investigated experimentally.

  • Since Pyoungtaek thermal power plant began using natural gas in 1986, the annual using volume has rapidly increased and reached 12.7 million tons in 1999. When the natural gas is cooled to a temperature of approximately -162$^{\circ}$C at atmospheric pressure, it condenses to a liquid called liquefied natural gas(LNG). LNG has a special characters such as odorless, colorless, non-corrosive, and non-toxic. So, LNG storage tank, tanker ship, transfer pipelines are required the special storage and transportation systems and technology. The presently operating LNG terminals are Pyongtaek and Inchon terminals. A total of 19 above-ground LNG storage tanks(100 thousand ㎘ grade) are currently in operation with a sendout capacity of 4,360tons/hour. To meet the growing domestic demand of LNG supply, the Inchon receiving terminal is expanding(six in-ground tank) and constructing a third LNG terminal at Tongyong. In this paper, case study on seepage analysis and countermeasure against increasing the seepage volume of in-ground LNG storage tank excavation work is reported. The results of an additional seepage analysis are presented to verify the design seepage volume of assumption section and seepage volume after curtain-grouting in the slurry wall.

In addition to the high gas content, gas hydrates are remarkably stable. The main barrier to development of gas hydrate technology is the lack of an effective mass production method of gas hydrate in solid form. In this study, some performance comparison among several cases classified by different volume sizes of solution were carried to identify the characteristics due to the volume increment. And it is found that one of the main reasons disturbing hydrate formation is related to the lack of cooling heat transfer due to the volume increase of the solution. So, three kinds of heat transfer plates which have different shapes and cross sectional areas were made and tested for the performance comparison following to the shape and area of each plate. Finally it is clarified that the heat transfer is one of the major factors effecting hydrate formation performance and the installation of heat transfer plate can enhance the formation performance especially not in terms of the quantity but the speed.

  • The thermal design of the bus bar of a Gas-Insulated Switchgear(GIS) becomes important since the current-carrying capacity of the GIS is limited by maximum operating temperature. In order to predict temperature rise of the bus bar, a program has been developed. Various heat sources possibly generated in the bus bar are calculated in the program. To estimate temperature rises at the bus bar caused by the heat balance between the heat generation and heat transfer, the finite volume method as well as the $4^{th}$ order Runge-Kutta method has been employed. In the experiments, temperature rises at conductor, contact part and external tank are measured for full-scale gas-insulated bus bars. The comparisons of the predicted values of the heat balance calculation to those of the experiments are made. From the comparisons, it is concluded that the developed program can predict the temperature rise of the bus bar quite well.

  • Hydrox gas which is the mixed gas of hydrogen and oxygen gained fromwater electrolysis is one of the new clean energy sources and thus is researched and commercialized actively. Especially, it can be replaced the fossil energy and shows the better quality compared to the conventional energy such as LPG or acetylene gas. The mixed gas of hydrogen and oxygen is gained from water electrolysis reaction. It has constant volume ratio 2:1 of hydrogen and oxygen, and it is used as a source of thermal energy by combustion reaction. Further, hydrox gas is nearly a mixed ideal gas combusting itself completely and its combustion shows anunique characteristics of implosion. In this study, temperature rise effects on hydrox gas content through mixed combustion test of kerosene and hydrox gas and LPG and hydrox gas are investigated. it is also confirmed that economy of mixed combustion of hydrox gas as effective energy is fairly probable.
