This paper predicted the thermal conductivity of spatially reinforced composites(SRC) by applying the volume averaging method and the thermal resistance method. The former method employs existing micro-mechanical theories and conventional transformation rules to constitute relations for the unit cells of the composites and the latter one uses the analogy between the diffusion of heat and electrical charge. To verify the theoretical prediction, the thermal conductivity of 4-D(dimensional) SRC was examined experimentally. The comparison of the numerical results with those measured by the experiment showed good agreement.
Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-fabricated suspended devices were used to measure the in-plane electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity of 304 nm and 516 nm thick InGaAlAs films with 0.3% ErAs nanoparticle inclusions by volume. The suspended device allows comprehensive thermoelectric property measurements from a single thin film or nanowire sample. Both thin film samples have identical material compositions and the sole difference is in the sample thickness. The measured Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity were all larger in magnitude for the thicker sample. While the relative change in values was dependent on the temperature, the thermal conductivity demonstrated the largest decrease for the thinner sample in the measurement temperature range of 325 K to 425 K. This could be a result of the increased phonon scattering due to the surface defects and included ErAs nanoparticles. Similar to the results from other material systems, the combination of the measured data resulted in higher values of the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) for the thinner sample; this result supports the theory that the reduced dimensionality, such as in twodimensional thin films or one-dimensional nanowires, can enhance the thermoelectric figure of merit compared with bulk threedimensional materials. The results strengthen and provide a possible direction in locating and optimizing thermoelectric materials for energy applications.
There is increasing demand for the development of a new material with high strength, high stiffness, and good electrical conductivity that can be used for high-voltage direct current cables. In this study, we develop aluminum-based composites containing C60 fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, or graphene using a powder metallurgical route and evaluate their strength, stiffness, coefficient of thermal expansion, and electrical conductivity. By optimizing the process conditions, a material with a tensile strength of 800 MPa, an elastic modulus of 90 GPa, and an electrical conductivity of 40% IACS is obtained, which may replace iron-core cables. Furthermore, by designing the type and volume fraction of the reinforcement, a material with a tensile strength of 380 MPa, elastic modulus of 80 GPa, and electrical conductivity of 54% IACS is obtained, which may compete with AA 6201 aluminum alloys for use in all-aluminum conductor cables.
Silicon is a promising next-generation anode material for lithium-ion battery, and it has been studied for commercialization due to the high theoretical capacity. However, it has problems of the volume change during charge-discharge and the poor electrical conductivity. To solve these problems, formation of SiO2 and carbon coating on the surface of silicon crystal were performed to protect the side reaction and enhance the electrical conductivity of silicon. CNT and CNF were also added to mitigate the volume change and increase the conductivity. Physical properties of asprepared samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM, and EDS. Electrochemical characteristics were investigated by electrical conductivity measurement, EIS, CV and cycle performance test. (Si/SiO2/C)+CNT&CNF showed high electrical conductivity and low charge-transfer resistance, and the capacity was 1528 mAh/g at 1st cycle and 1055 mAh/g at 50th cycle with 83% capacity retention.

Two kinds of alumina nanofluids are prepared by dispersing $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles m transformer oil. The thermal conductivity of the nanoparticle-oil mixtures increases with particle volume fraction and thermal conductivity of the solid particle itself. The $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles at a volume of 0.5% can increase the thermal conductivity of the transformer oil by 5.7%, and the overall heat transfer coefficient by 20%. From the natural convection test using a prototype transformer, the cooling effect of $Al_2O_3$-oil nanofluids on the heating element and oil itself is confirmed. However, excessive quantities of the surfactant have a harmful effect on viscosity, and thus it is strongly recommended to control the addition of the surfactant with great care.
In this study, a novel Cu composite sheet with embedded high electric conduction path was developed as another alternative for the interconnect materials possessing high electrical conductivity as well as high strength. The Cu composite sheet was fabricated by forming Ag conduction paths not within the interior but on the surface of a high strength Cu substrate by damascene electroplating process. As a result, the electrical conductivity increased by 40% thanks to mesh type Ag conduction paths, while the ultimate tensile strength decreased by 20%. The interfacial fracture resistance of Cu composite sheet prepared by damascene electroplating increased by above 50 times compared to Cu composite sheet by conventional electroplating. For feasibility test for practical application, a leadframe for LED module was manufactured by a progressive blanking and piercing processes, and the blanked surface profile was evaluated as a function of the volume fraction of Ag conduction paths. As Ag conduction path became finer, pressing formability improved.

The thermal conductivity of water- and ethylene glycol-based nanofluids containing alumina $(Al_2O_3)$, zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide $(TiO_2)$ nanoparticles is measured by varying the particle diameter and volume fraction. The transient hot-wire method using an anodized tantalum wire for electrical insulation is employed for the measurement. The experimental results show that nanofluids have substantially higher thermal conductivities than those of the base fluid and the ratio of thermal conductivity enhancement increases linearly with the volume fraction. It has been found that the ratio of thermal conductivity enhancement increases with decreasing particle size but no empirical or theoretical correlation can explain the particle-size dependence of the thermal conductivity. This work provides, for the first time to our knowledge, a set of consistent experimental data over a wide range of nanofluid conditions and can therefore serve as a basis for developing theoretical models to predict thermal conduction phenomena in nanofluids.
In this paper, we study the computation of the electric field of dielectric analysis models with the conductivity on its surface. The finite element formulation describes a sinusoidal electrodynamic field computation. One term is added to this functional in order to take the conductivity on its surface into accounts. The electric field computations of the dielectric analysis model are done first with the surface conductivity and second with the volume conductivity. Also, it is shown that a surface conductor with sufficiently large conductivity can be substituted with a floating equipotential line. This method is applied to an insulator in arbitrary shape with the conductivity on its surface.

Cancer cell lysis at pulsed DC is realized using micromachined electrodes. In this research, quantitative analyses are performed on cell lysis results. The cell volume increasing at the pulses applied are analyzed in different medium conditions on osmotic pressure and conductivity, and the cell lysis procedures are studied in detail experimentally. Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) is used as the medium. To change the conductivity of PBS, NaCl concentration of PBS is adjusted, and inositol is used with PBS to control the effects of the osmotic pressure to cell lysis performance.

To improve the mean-life and the reliability of power cable, we have investigated specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity of XLPE insulator and semiconducting materials in 154[kV] underground power transmission cable. Specimens were made of sheet form with the seven of specimens for measurement. Specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity were measured by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and Nano Flash Diffusivity. Specific-heat measurement temperature ranges of XLPE insulator were from $20[^{\circ}C]\;to\;90[^{\circ}C]$, and the heating rate was $1[^{\circ}C/min]$. And the measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity were $25[^{\circ}C],\;55[^{\circ}C]\;and\;90[^{\circ}C]$. In case of semiconducting materials, the measurement temperature ranges of specific heat were from $20[^{\circ}C]\;to\;60[^{\circ}C]$, and the heating rate was $1[^{\circ}C/min]$. And the measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity were $25[^{\circ}C]\;and\;55[^{\circ}]C$. From these experimental results both specific heat and thermal conductivity were increased by heating rate because volume of materials was expanded according to rise in temperature. We could know that a small amount of CNT has a excellent thermal properties.
