  • The output voltage value of AC high voltage source has been usually obtained by multiplying low voltage value measured at both terminals of low voltage resistor by the dividing ratio of the high voltage capacitive divider. From the dividing ratio determined of each 200 kV capacitive divider, we have developed step-up method for measuring the output voltage up to 400 kV using two same type of 200 kV capacitive dividers connected in series. The theoretical dividing ratio of 400 kV capacitive dividers connected in series coincides with that of manufacturer's certification within measurement uncertainty. Thus, this developed step-up method makes it possible to extend the range of output voltage from 200 kV to 400 kV. Furthermore, The dividing ratio of divider under test obtained using this step-up method is consistent with that obtained using one 200 kV high voltage divider within corresponding uncertainties.

  • We have theoretically investigated the effects of the interplay between the driving voltage of Mach-Zehnder(MZ) modulators and the bandwidth of low-pass filters(LPF) in 10[Gb/s] duobinary modulation systems. For the change of driving voltage ratios(driving voltage/switching voltage), the transmission performance has been evaluated over 200[km] of single-mode fiber(SMF) systems. For driving voltage ratios with smaller than 100[%], the transmission performance has been maintained and greatly affected by the bandwidth of LPFs than the driving voltage. For driving voltage ratios with larger than 100[%], the transmission performance has been degraded and is not sensitive to the bandwidth of LPFs. To see the limitation of driving voltage, we have reduced the driving voltage ratio to 50[%]. Our results suggest that 10[Gb/s] duobinary signals with driving voltage ratio with smaller than 100[%] have been transmitted over 200[km] SMF within 2[dB] power penalty without dispersion compensation. For the driving voltage ratio with 50[%], we have verified that the transmission performance was maintained.

  • In this paper, voltage clamped tapped-inductor boost converter with high voltage conversion ratio is proposed. The conventional tapped-inductor boost converter has a serious drawback such as high voltage stresses across all power semiconductors due to the high resonant voltage caused by the leakage inductor of tapped inductor. Therefore, the dissipative snubber is essential for absorbing this resonant voltage, which could degrade the overall power conversion efficiency. To overcome these drawbacks, the proposed converter employs a voltage clamping capacitor instead of the dissipative snubber. Therefore, the voltage stresses of all power semiconductors are not only clamped as the output voltage but the power conversion efficiency can also be considerably improved. Moreover, since the energy stored in the clamp capacitor is transferred to the output side together with the input energy, the proposed converter can achieve the higher voltage conversion ratio than the conventional tapped-inductor boost converter. Therefore, the proposed converter is expected to be well suited to various applications demanding the high efficiency and high voltage conversion ratio. To confirm the validity of the proposed circuit, the theoretical analysis and experimental results of the proposed converter are presented.

  • An advanced direct torque control (DTC) with pulse width modulation (PWM) method is presented in this paper. The duty ratio calculation of the selected voltage vector is based on the voltage functions of the selected voltage vector according to the sector angle. The proposed DTC uses a conventional DTC scheme with six sector divisions and switching rules. However, the winding voltages are supplied by the PWM approach. Furthermore, the duty ratio of the switching voltage vector is determined by the flux, torque error, and motor speed. The base voltage that shall determine the duty ratio can be calculated by approximate voltage functions according to the voltage angle. For the calculation of base voltages, second-order quadratic functions are used to express the output voltage of the selected voltage vector according to voltage angle. The coefficients for the second-order quadratic functions are selected by the voltage vector, which is determined by the switching rules of the DTC. In addition, the voltage functions are calculated by the coefficients and voltage angle between the voltage vector and rotor position. The switching voltages from the calculated duty ratio can supply the proper torque and flux to reduce the ripple and error. The proposed control scheme is verified through practical experimental comparisons.

  • This paper presents the performance analysis of 10[Gb/s] optical duobinary transmitters with the non-ideal Mach-Zehnder modulator which does not have exactly 50/50 splitting/combining ratios by computer simulations. For driving voltage ratios(=driving voltage/switching voltage) with smaller than 100[%], the transmission performance has been greatly affected by extension of LPF bandwidths. Nevertheless, the performance has been degraded when the driving voltage ratio is 100[%]. The smaller driving voltage ratios has, the more sensitivity improves by extension of LPF bandwidths under the asymmetry condition. But the driving voltage ratio with 80[%] has better bit error rate(BER) than those with 50[%] and 25[%].

  • A potential transformer(PT) has ratio error and phase angle error. Precise measurement of the errors of PT can be achieved using high voltage capacitance bridge, high voltage capacitor and low voltage capacitor. The uncertainty for this method is evaluated and found to be $20{\times}10^{-6}$ in both ratio error and phase angle error. The values measured for PT using the method are well consistent with the those measured for same PT in NMIA(National Measurement Institute of Australia) within the corresponding uncertainty.

  • In this paper, a new definition of short-circuit ratio concept for multi-converter HVDC systems is proposed. Analysis results of voltage interaction between converters show that the reactive power-voltage characteristic of a converter has a dominant effect on voltage interaction level compared with its active power-voltage characteristic. Such a relation between converter reactive power and voltage interaction level supports taking the former into account in the definition of short-circuit ratio concept for multi-converter systems. The proposed definition is verified by the method of maximum power curve for various system configurations. Furthermore, a formula to calculate transient overvoltage for multi-converter systems is derived based on the proposed definition, and the efficiency of the derived formula is verified.

  • The voltage and frequency dependence of voltage holding ratio (VHR) in a homogeneously-aligned liquid-crystal (LC) cell is studied in this paper. The discharge curves with different scan frequencies are obtained and the saturation phenomenon of VHR is observed under specific amplitudes of driving voltage. Our results suggest a reasonable concept to improve the VHR in LC displays without increasing the frame rate.

  • Output voltage value of AC high voltage source has usually been obtained by measuring the low arm voltage of high voltage divider or the secondary voltage of high voltage transformer. In this study, we have fabricated the AC 400 kV high voltage divider using high voltage electrode and electric field measurement sensor. The dividing ratio of the fabricated 400 kV high voltage divider was evaluated using reference 400 kV capacitive divider. The dividing ratio of 400 kV high voltage divider is found to be 12,322 and has the good linearity within 0.63 % against AC high voltage up to 400 kV. Therefore, the developed 400 kV high voltage divider could evaluate 400 kV high voltage supply and voltage divider used in industry.

  • A multilayer piezoelectric transformer (MPT) which generates a high voltage dc power with low driving voltage and high voltage setup ratio was made by the tape casting method. The measured electrical characteristics of the MPT agreed with the results simulated from the equivalent circuit of the MPT. With increasing the number of layer in the MPT, the resonance curve of the input cur-rent revealed an asymmetry due to the increasing input capacitance, while that of output dc voltages revealed symmetry. The MPT which has very thin layer was excellently characterized as low driving voltage and high voltage setup ratio. The output dc voltage is nonlinearly influenced by the number of layer in the MPT.
