  • Recently, mobile devices support multi-functions such as 3D game, wireless internet, moving pictures, DMB, GPS, and PMP. Bigger size of display device is indispensable to support these functions and higher speed of the interface is needed. However, conventional parallel interfaces between processor and display nodule are not competent enough for that high speed transfers. High-speed serial interface is beginning to appear as an alternative for parallel interface. The advantages of the serial interface are high bandwidth, small number of interconnections, low-power consumption, and good quality of electro-magnetic interference. In this paper, we implement serial interface and use it for a display module. LVDS is used for PHY layer and a defined packet is used for link layer. The feature of the implemented serial interface is the reduced number of interconnections with enough bandwidth.

  • In this paper an effective five-phase induction motor (IM) and its drive methods are proposed. Due to the additional degrees of freedom, the five-phase IM drive presents unique characteristics for enhancing the torque producing capability of the motor. Also the five-phase motor drives possess many other advantages when compared to traditional three-phase motor drives. Some of these advantages include, reducing the amplitude and increasing the frequency of the torque pulsation, reducing the amplitude of the current without increasing the voltage per phase and increasing the reliability. In order to maximize the torque per ampere, the proposed motor has concentrated winding, the produced back electromotive force (EMF) is almost trapezoidal, and the motor is supplied with the combined sinusoidal plus the third harmonic of the currents. For demonstrating the superior performance of the proposed five-phase IM, the motors are also analyzed on the synchronously rotating reference frame. To supply trapezoidal current waveform and to exclude the effect of the $3^{rd}$ harmonic current, a new control stratagem is proposed. The proposed control method is based on direct torque control (DTC) and rotor flux oriented control (RFOC) of the five-phase IM drives. It is able to reduce the acoustical noise, the torque, the flux, the current, and the speed pulsations during the steady state. The DTC transient merits are preserved, while a better quality steady-state performance is produced in the five phase motor drive for a wide speed range. Experimental results clearly demonstrated a more dynamic steady state performance with the proposed control system.

  • Thin light-active layers of the $CuInSe_2$ solar cell were prepared on Mo-coated sodalime glass substrates by one-step electrodeposition and post-annealing. The structure, morphology, and composition of $CuInSe_2$ film could be controlled by deposition parameters, such as the composition of metallic precursors, the concentration of complexing agents, and the temperature of post-annealing with elemental selenium. A dense and uniform Cu-poor $CuInSe_2$ film was successfully obtained in a range of parametric variation of electrodeposition with a constant voltage of -0.5 V vs. a Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The post-annealing of the film at high temperature above $500^{\circ}C$ induced crystallization of $CuInSe_2$ with well-developed grains. The KCN-treatment of the annealed $CuInSe_2$ films further induced Cu-poor $CuInSe_2$ films without secondary phases, such as $Cu_2Se$. The structure, morphology, and composition of $CuInSe_2$ films were compared with respect to the conditions of electrodeposition and post-annealing using SEM, XRD, Raman, AES and EDS analysis. And the conditions for preparing device-quality $CuInSe_2$ films by electrodeposition were proposed.

  • Flat-panel direct conversion detectors used in compound substance of semiconductor are being studied for digital x-ray imaging. Recently, such detectors are deposited by physical vapor deposition(PVD) generally. But, most of materials (HgI2, PbI2, TlBr, PbO) deposited by PVD have shown difficult fabrication and instability for large area x-ray imaging. Consequently, in this paper, we propose applicable potentialities for screen printing method that is coated on a substrate easily. It is compared to electrical properties among semiconductors such as $HgI_2$, $PbI_2$, PbO, HgBrI, InI, and $TlPbI_3$ under investigation for direct conversion detectors. Each film detector consists of an ~25 to $35\;{\mu}m$ thick layer of semiconductor and was coated onto the substrate. Substrates of $2cm{\times}2cm$ have been used to evaluate performance of semiconductor radiation detectors. Dark current, sensitivity and physics properties were measured. Leakage current of $HgI_2$ as low as $9pA/mm^2$ at the operation bias voltage of ${\sim}1V/{\mu}m$ was observed. Such a value is not better than PVD process, but it is easy to be fabricated in high quality for large area x-ray Imaging. Our future efforts will concentrate on optimization of growth of film thickness that is coated onto a-Si TFT array.

  • In a split beam echo sounder, the transducer design needs to have minimal side lobes because the angular position and level of the side lobes establishes the usable signal level and phase angle limits for determining target strength. In order to suppress effectively the generation of unwanted side lobes in the directivity pattern of split beam transducer, the spacing and size of the transducer elements need to be controlled less than half of a wavelength. With this purpose, a 50 kHz tonpilz type transducer with a half-wavelength diameter in relation to the development of a split beam transducer was designed using the equivalent circuit model, and the underwater performance characteristics were measured and analyzed. From the in-air and in-water impedance responses, the measured value of the electro-acoustic conversion efficiency for the designed transducer was 51.6%. A maximum transmitting voltage response (TVR) value of 172.25dB re $1{\mu}Pa/V$ at 1m was achieved at 52.92kHz with a specially designed matching network and the quality factor was 10.3 with the transmitting bandwidth of 5.14kHz. A maximum receiving sensitivity (SRT) of -183.57dB re $1V/{\mu}Pa$ was measured at 51.45kHz and the receiving bandwidth at -3dB was 1.71kHz. These results suggest that the designed tonpilz type transducer can be effectively used in the development of a split beam transducer for a 50kHz fish sizing echo sounder.

  • An indirect matrix converter (IMC) is a modern power generation system that enables a direct ac/ac conversion without the need for any bulky and limited lifetime electrolytic capacitor. This system also allows four-quadrant operation, generation of sinusoidal output voltage waveforms with variable frequency and amplitude, and control of input power factor. This study proposes a pulse-width modulation-based sliding-mode controller to achieve unity input-power factor operation of the IMC independently of the active power exchanged with the grid, as well as a fast dynamic response. The designed equivalent control law determines, at each sampling period, the appropriate q-axis component of the modulated input current to be injected into the grid through the LC input filter. An integral term of the error is included in the expression of the sliding surface to increase the accuracy of the control method. A double space vector modulation method is used to synthesize the direction of the space vector of the input currents as required by the sliding-mode controller and the space vectors of the target output voltages. Simulation and experimental results are provided to show the effectiveness and evaluate the performance of the proposed control method.

  • The thermistors and AD590 are widely used for temperature measurement in space application. The resistance of thermistor will vary according to the temperature variation therefore the external voltage or current stimulus signal have to be provided to measure resistance variation. Recently high resolution electro optic camera system of satellite requires tight thermal control of the camera structure to minimize the thermal structural distortion which can affects the image quality. In order to achieve $1^{\circ}$(deg C) thermal control requirement, the accuracy of temperature measurement have to be higher than $0.3^{\circ}$(deg C). In this paper, the accuracy of temperature measurement using thermistors is estimated and analyzed.

  • For general radiological examinations, even in the same area and the same test, the test conditions must be set differently according to the patient. However, since it is impossible to consider the body shape and conditions of patients every time in medical institutions where various patients visit, the tests are conducted by setting the AEC which automatically sets the test conditions. AEC is most commonly used in chest radiography. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose the improvement plans for using AEC by measuring the exposure dose and evaluating the image quality according to whether the AEC is used or not, and to provide basic data for AEC research. In the present study, images were acquired while varying tube voltage and test distance according to the use of AEC in chest radiography. The radiation dose was measured by placing the dosimeter in front of the chest phantom, and the CNR and SNR of acquired images were analyzed using Image J. The t-test was conducted for the statistical analysis and the significance was determined at the level of 95%(p<.05). As a result of this study, in the inspection distance (100cm, 140cm, 180cm) according to the use of AEC, high doses were observed when the AEC was used and there was statistically significant difference(p<.05). In the t-test to determine the difference between CNR and SNR depending on whether AEC was used or not, there was no significant difference according to the use of AEC(p>.05). Therefore, when performing chest radiography, if the radiologist establishes the appropriate examination conditions and conducts the examination by not just relying solely on AEC, it may be possible to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure to the patient.

  • This study was done to search for positional candidate genes associated with the back fat thickness trait using a Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) in purebred Yorkshires (N = 1755). Genotype and phenotype analyses were done for 1,642 samples. As a result of the associations with back fat thickness using the Gemma program (ver. 0.93), when the genome-wide suggestive threshold was determined using the Bonferroni method ($p=1.61{\times}10^{-5}$), the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers with suggestive significance were identified in 1 SNP marker on chromosome 2 (MARC0053928; $p=3.65{\times}10^{-6}$), 2 SNP markers on chromosome 14 (ALGA0083078; $p=7.85{\times}10^{-6}$, INRA0048453; $p=1.27{\times}10^{-5}$), and 1 SNP marker on chromosome 18 (ALGA0120564; $p=1.44{\times}10^{-5}$). We could select positional candidate genes (KCNQ1, DOCK1, LOC106506151, and LOC110257583), located close to the SNP markers. Among these, we identified a potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily Q member gene (KCNQ1) and the dedicator of cytokinesis 1 (DOCK1) gene associated with obesity and Type-2 diabetes. The SNPs and haplotypes of the KCNQ1 and DOCK1 genes can contribute to understanding the genetic structure of back fat thickness. Additionally, it may provide basic data regarding marker assisted selection for a meat quality trait in pigs.

  • Application of liquid crystal (LC) materials to a flexible device is challenging because the bending of LC displays easily causes change in thickness of the LC layer and orientation of LCs, resulting in deterioration in a displayed image quality. In this work, we demonstrate a prototype device combining a flexible polymer substrate and an optically isotropic LC-polymer composite in which the device consists of interdigitated in-plane switching electrodes deposited on a flexible colorless polyimide substrate and the composite consisting of nano-sized LC droplets in a polymer matrix. The device can keep good electro-optic characteristics even when it is in a bending state because the LC orientation is not disturbed in both voltage-off and -on states. The proposed device shows a high potential to be applicable for future flexible LC devices.
