The Weolseong diatreme crops out about 28km south of Kyeongju City, Korea. The diatreme is a circular shaped volcanic vent, 1.2km in diameter, that formed subaerially, probably by phreatomagmatic (phreatoplinian) eruptions of Tertiary age. The rocks occupying the display well developed layering produced by base surge and proximal ba11istic fall. Accretionary lapilli are a common component. The rocks comprise tuff breccia and fine-grained rock derived from the vent walls. This sequence has undergone subsidence of at least over 650m. Most explanations for the presence of bedded tuffs at considerable depths within a volcanic pipe involve subsidence. Comparable amount of subsidence are recorded in many diatremes in other parts of the world. The ore body is distinctly circular and funnel shaped in center of diatreme. The vent area of diatreme served as channel ways for the mineralized hydrothermal fluids.
Geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions and K-Ar ages are analyzed in volcanic rocks from Weno Island, Caroline Islands. Seven Weno lava samples of alkali basalt and basaltic trachyandesite are aphyric or sparsely phyric comprising olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene phenocrysts. Whole-rock geochemical variation of Weno lavas reflects main fractional crystallization of olivine and Cr-spinel phenocrysts. Newly determined K-Ar ages of Weno lavas range from 6.7 to 11.3 Ma (late Miocene), indicating their formation during primary volcanic stage of Chuuk Islands. Trace element compositions of Weno lavas are very similar to those of typical ocean island basalts (OIBs), suggesting their formation during intra-plate mantle plume activity. The plume composition is isotopically very similar to that of Hawaiian hot spot. However, the age span of Chuuk volcanism is longer than that of the other individual volcanoes in the Pacific.
Recently, offshore wind farms are increasingly expected, because there are huge resource and large site in offshore. Jeju island has optimum condition for constructing a wind energy farm. Unlike the mainland, Jeju island has stratified structure distribution between rock layers sediments due to volcanic activation. In these case, it can be occur engineering problems in whole structures as well as the safety of foundation as the thickness and distribution of sediment under top rock layer can not support sufficiently the structure. One of the most obvious applications of the pressuremeter test is the solution of the problem of laterally loaded piles. A hyperbolic non-linear p-y criterion for rock is developed in this study that can be used in LPILE program, to predict the deflection, moment, and shear reponses of a shaft under the applied lateral loads. Finally, a comparison between the predicted and measured response at two different sites is shown to give an idea of the accuracy of the IFP method.
Groundwaters were sampled from 730 wells being used for drinking purposes during 2007-2009. These samples were analysed using a gas-flow type GPC (Gas Proportional Counter) according to the USEPA method (900.0). We obtained a gross-alpha counting TDS (total dissolved solid) efficiency curve (Y = 0.0017X2 - 0.3122X + 19.165, X = TDS, Y = efficiency, $R^2$ = 0.9734) using natural uranium standard to get gross ${\alpha}$ value of the samples. The gross alpha values ranged from MDA (minimum detectable activity) to 14.88 pCi/L and 429 samples showed values higher than MDA (< 0.9 pCi/L). Correlations of the uranium values with the total alpha values and the gross-alpha values indicate that uranium values have high impacts on gross-alpha values. Groundwater samples of study areas were classified into four regions according to the rock types; plutonic (granite) rock region (427 areas), metamorphic rock region (181 aeras), sedimentary rock region (70 areas), volcanic rock region (52 areas). Groundwater of Cretaceous granite presented the highest gross-alpha value. Gross alpha in groundwaters showed no relationship with uranium in terms of the geological ages, rocks and minerals.

A number of alunite and pyrophyllite deposits occur around the Haenam area where Cretaceous volcanic and volcanogenic sediments are widely distributed. The K-Ar ages of alunite, sericite and whole rocks collected from alunite and pyrophyllite deposits and unaltered rocks representing various stratigraphic horizon of the area were determined and their formation stage was discussed. The ages of volcanic rocks range between $68.6{\pm}1.9$ and $94.1{\pm}2.0$ Ma corresponding to Cenomanian-Maastrichtian of upper Cretaceous. Andesitic rock gives $94.1{\pm}2.0$. Rhyolite and acidic tuffs give $79.47{\pm}1.7$ and $82.8{\pm}1.2$ Ma corresponding to Campanian. The later stage andesite gives $68.6{\pm}1.9$ Ma of Maastrichtian. The results suggest that volcanism of the area can be devided into three different stages. The ages of alunite and sericite range $71.8{\pm}2.8$ to $76.6{\pm}2.9$ Ma of late Campanian to early Maastrichtian which is rather earlier than the age of granite(67 Ma). It indicates that the alteration ages of these clay mineral deposits appeared to be related with its volcanism rather than the hydrothermal stage of granite of this area.
The Cretaceous fossil sites of Seoyuri in Hwasun was designated as the Korean Natural Monument No. 487 in November 2007. It provides important resources for paleoenvironmental studies, including theropod trackways, plant fossils, mudcracks, ripple marks, and horizontal bedding. The Cretaceous sedimentary strata contain a wide variety of volcanic pebbles, 5-40 cm in diameter in the lower portion and are overlain by the Late Cretaceous Hwasun andesite. Whole rock absolute K-Ar age determinations were performed on six volcanic pebbles from the Cretaceous sedimentary strata and on two samples from the overlaying Hwasun andesite. These ages indicate that the rocks belong to the period between the Turonian of the late Cretaceous (91-70 Ma) and the Pliocene age of the early Cenozoic ($63.4{\pm}1.2$ and $62.1{\pm}1.2$ Ma). Thus, the K-Ar ages indicate that the maximum geological age of the dinosaur track-bearing sedimentary deposits is about ca. 70 Ma. Therefore, it suggests that the age is comparable to the formation ages of the dinosaur footprints-bearing deposits in Sado area of Yeosu (71-66Ma).
Petrological studies were performed on the Sanbangsan lava dome, located in the southwest of Jeju Island Volcanic Field. According to the lava ejection method, it is 'an internal primitive form' that is gradually pushed up and expanded by continuous magma injection from the bottom to the top of the vent and it corresponds to the 'low lava dome'. The rocks are partly plotted in the field of benmoreite, but mostly plotted in the field of trachyte of the Cox et al.(1979) classification diagram, and also mainly plotted in the field of trachyte of Le Maitre et al.(2002) and Zr/TiO2-Nb/Y classification diagram. Therefore, the expression that described the rock of Sanbangsan lava dome as 'trachy-andesite' should be corrected to 'trachyte'. The volcanic rocks that consists in the Sanbangsan lava dome are trachyte containing normative quartz and shows differentiation trend in the range of 59.75-63.46 wt.% SiO2.
Miocene basalt plugs in Goseong contain a large variety of crustal and mantle xenoliths and xenocrysts. One of basalt plugs, Unbongsan, are derived from 160 km depth. Whole-rock geochemistry and pressure and temperature conditions of mineral phases indicate that Unbongsan volcanic rocks are alkali basalts and the source magma of the alkali basalts was generated from about $0.2{\sim}2%$ partial melting of depleted garnet peridotite. Crystallization pressures and temperatures of mineral phases within ascending magma of Unbongsan alkali basalt indicate that olivines, clinopyroxenes, and plagioclases were crystallized at $75{\sim}110km,\;40{\sim}52km,\;37{\sim}54km$ depth, respectively. The ascending magma of Unbongsan alkali basalts enclosed mantle xenoliths at about $57{\sim}67km$ depth.

The environmental tracers tritium/helium-3 (3H/3He) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were investigated in ground water from Jeju Island, Korea, a basaltic volcanic island. The apparent 3H/3He and CFC-12 ages were in relatively good agreement in samples with low concentrations of terrigenic He. Ground water mixing was evaluated by comparing 3H and CFC-12 concentrations with mixing models, which distinguished old water with negligible 3H and CFC-12, young water with piston flow, and binary mixtures of the two end members. The ground water CFC-12 age is much older in water from wells completed in confined zones of the hydro-volcanic Seoguipo formation in coastal areas than in water from the basaltic aquifer. Comparison of major element concentrations in ground water with the CFC-12 age shows that nitrate contamination processes contribute more solutes in young water than are derived from water-rock interactions in non-contaminated old water. Chemical evolution of ground water resulting from silicate weathering in basaltic rocks reaches the zeolite-smectite phase boundary. The calcite saturation state of ground water increased with the CFC-12 apparent (piston flow) age. In agricultural areas, the temporal trend of nitrate concentration in ground water was consistent with the known history of chemical fertilizer use on Jeju Island, but the response of nitrate concentration in ground water to nitrogen inputs follows an approximate 10-year delay. Based on mass balance calculations, it was estimated that about 40% of the nitrogen applied by fertilizers reached the water table and contaminated ground water resources when the fertilizer use was at the highest level.
We report the petrographic and petrochemical results on the rocks which have been classified as hornfelsic sandstones or mudstones of the Gyeongsang Group in Wolseong Area, part of Choyang Geologic Sheet (Tateiwa, 1924) and discuss its origin. The rocks consist of alternating layers with dark. fine-grained and bright, coarse-grained but don't have any clues of thermal alteration such as hornfels. The rocks are composed of quartz, feldspar and rock fragments of volcanic origin. The overall geochemical characteristics of the rocks indicate that the rocks have mainly rhyolitic composition with 64.5-72 wt% SiO$_2$ and are similar to the trend of Cretaceous and Tertiary volcanic rocks around this area. On the contrary, the geochemical characteristics of rocks are distinguished from those of Lower Cretaceous Sindong and Mayans mudrocks in the Gyeongsang Basin. We re-name the rocks as rhyolitic tuffite.
