This study focuses on developing catalysts for the removal of toluene produced from paint booth. Toluene is one of the major VOC in painting, coating process. Pd catalysts have been used in hydrogenation oxidation and low temperature combustion reaction for toluene removal. Pd catalysts, even though it is very precious and expensive. Therefore, the prepared catalysts from minimizing the amount of Pd ratio (0.1~1.0wt%) were measured. As a result, 1.0wt% Pd(R) catalyst under all conditions showed the highest activity. These results may suggest that the catalytic activity is related to Pd dispersion according sintering atmosphere and Pd ratio in the manufacturing process through the analysis of SEM, XRD.

Since the seventies and the oil crisis, energy-saving measures have led to a reduction in the ventilation of room. The use of synthetic materials which emit various chemical substances had led to an increase in the concentration of indoor pollutants. "Sick building syndrome (SBS)" and "Sick house syndrome (SHS)" are worldwide problems. Also, the number of complaints about indoor air pollution caused by VOCs (Volatile organic compound) and HCHO (Formaldehyde) has increased. It is important that evaluating and understanding emission of indoor air pollutant from building materials. The object of this study was to evaluate emission test method for flooring such as wood based flooring, carpet tile, rubber tile, PVC sheet and tile, and to determine emission of TVOC and form-aldehyde. The quantity of TVOC and carbonyl compounds emission were sampled and measured by Tenax TA and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MSD), 2,4-DNPH cartrige with ozone scrubber and high performance liquid from flooring. The TVOC concentration emitted from carpet tile was ($7.419\;mg/m^2 h$) the highest among 5 groups of test materials. In wood based flooring and PVC tile, the emitted concentration of toluene was high. And the dodecane emission was highest in carpet. The concentration of TVOC decreased by an increase in emission test period. After 7 days, the concentration of TVOC from floorings were about 50% below of the concentration at the first day. TVOC emission from wood based flooring, carpet tile, rubber tile, PVC sheet and tile were decreased in 28 days and remained steady after about 15 days. The concentration of formaldehyde emission from floorings showed extremely low.
Removal characteristics of volatile organic carbons(VOCs) by ozone oxidation and other processes in the raw water of the 1st Nakdong water treatment plant were investigated. Dichrolomethane, toluene and other 7 compounds were detected in the raw water. With regard to detected 4 compounds in finally treated water, it was found that VOCs could not be removed effectively by traditional water treatment process. Benzene, 1,2-dichlorobenzne were not detected in the raw water but they were detected in the process of treatment. The compound of highest detection frequency was dichloromethane. When the raw water was controlled at pH 7, temperature $20^{\circ}C$, 5 minutes as contact time, 10 minutes as reaction time, the removal rate of THMFP, $KMnO_4$ demand, TOC, $UV_{254nm}$ and $NH_3-N$ were 46.4%, 22%, 19.6%, 31% and 8%, respectively. From estimating the finally treated water qualities in 7 kinds of treatment processes, P-6 process(raw water-chlorination-coagulation-ozonation) was most effective for organics removal and THMs control. Removal efficiencies for $KMnO_4$ demand and TOC by the process which combined preozonation with coagulation was twice better than only preozonation. $NH_3-N$ removal rate was shown as 10% by P-3 process(raw water-coagulation-ozonation), but 83% of $NH_3-N$ was removed by P-4 process(raw water-coagulation-chlorination). It was found that the chlorination is more effective than the ozonation for the NH3-N removal as commonly known.

The objective of this research was to develop environment-friendly adhesives for face fancy veneer bonding of engineered flooring. Urea-formaldehyde (UF)-tannin and melamine-formaldehyde (MF)/PVAc hybrid resin were used to replace UF resin in the formaldehyde-based resin system in order to reduce formaldehyde and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from the adhesives used between plywoods and fancy veneers. Wattle tannin powder (5 wt%) was added to UF resin and PVAc (30 wt%) to MF resin. These adhesive systems showed better bonding than commercial UF resin with a similar level of wood penetration. The initial adhesion strength was sufficient to be maintained within the optimum initial tack range. The standard formaldehyde emission test (desiccator method) and VOC analyzer were used to determine the formaldehyde and VOC emissions from engineered flooring bonded with commercial UF resin, UF-tannin and MF/PVAc hybrid resin. By desiccator method, the formaldehyde emission level of UF resin showed the highest but was reduced by replacing with UF-tannin and MF/PVAc hybrid resin. MF/PVAc hybrid satisfied the $E_1$ grade (below $1.5mg/{\ell}$). VOC emission results by VOC analyzer were similar with the formaldehyde emission results. TVOC emission was in the following order: UF > UF-tannin > MF/PVAc hybrid resin.
The Korean Ministry of Environment started controlling indoor air quality (IAQ) in 2004 through the introduction of a law regulating the use of pollutant emitting building materials. The use of materials with formaldehyde emission levels above $1.25 mg/m^2{\cdot}h$ (JIS A 1901, small chamber method) has been prohibited. This level is equivalent to the $E_2$ grade ($>5.0mg/{\ell}$) of the desiccator method (JIS A 1460). However, the $20{\ell}$ small chamber method requires a 7-day test time to obtain the formaldehyde and volatile organic compound (VOC) emission results from solid building interior materials. As a approach to significantly reduce the test time, the field and laboratory emission cell (FLEC) has been proposed in Europe with a total test time less than one hour. This paper assesses the reproducibility of testing formaldehyde and TVOC emissions from wood-based composites such as medium density fiberboard (MDF), laminate flooring, and engineered flooring using three methods: desiccator, perforator and FLEC. According to the desiccator and perforator standards, the formaldehyde emission level of each flooring was ${\le}E_1$ grade. The formaldehyde emission of MDF was $3.48 mg/{\ell}$ by the desiccator method and 8.57 g/100 g by the perforator method. To determine the formaldehyde emission, the peak areas of each wood-based composite were calculated from aldehyde chromatograms obtained using the FLEC method. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde and benzaldehyde were detected as aldehyde compounds. The experimental results indicated that MDF emitted chloroform, benzene, trichloroethylene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xy-lene, styrene, and o-xylene. MDF emitted significantly greater amounts of VOCs than the floorings did.

The purposes of this study are to treat sewage sludge that has increasingly become an issue and to recycle it as the adsorbent. The adsorbent was produced by carbonization and simultaneous steam activation, and its characteristics were studied. Parametric screening studies were carried out for the preparation of good adsorbent. Optimum operating conditions were confirmed as input carbonization-activated temperature of $840^{\circ}C$, feed steam flow rate of 70 g/min, carbonization-activated time of 30 min and feed dried sludge of 10.8 kg/day, respectively. At this time, the iodine adsorptivity was maximized as 328.1 mg/g. Pore development, structure, element compound and content were confirmed by using nanoPOROSITY, SEM (Scanning electron microscope), and EDS (Energy dispersive spectroscopy). Through this result, it was known that the adsorbent derived from sewage sludge could be used for the treatment of leachate in a landfill, VOCs (Volatile organic compounds), and so on.

In this paper, we use the HDDM (High-order Decoupled Direct Method)-driven ozone sensitivity to predict change in ozone concentrations in response to domain-wide $NO_x$(Oxides of Nitrogen) and VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emission controls over the Seoul Metropolitan Area during June 11~19, 2007. In order to validate the applicability of HDDM to $NO_x$ and VOC control scenarios, the HDDM results are compared to Brute Force Method (BFM). For VOC controls, NME (Normalized Mean Error) between BFM and HDDM remains less than 2% until the domain-wide VOC emissions are reduced by 80%. The NME for a 40% reduction in the domain-wide $NO_x$ emissions is less than 5% but increases abruptly after further reductions in the $NO_x$ emissions (i.e., 80% reduction). The results indicates that it may be inaccurate to use ozone sensitivity coefficients estimated at a given base emission condition in predicting ozone after $NO_x$ reductions larger than ~50% of the domain total in the SMA. Therefore, HDDM application on piecewise emissions is desirable to predict ozone response to emission controls with accuracy (i.e., truck emissions rather than the domain total). For computational efficiency, HDDM shows approximately 30% faster than the BFM sensitivity approach.

The ability to control filler performance and fines retention is vital in the development of both filled and non filled grades, respectively. This is very important when achieving the desired sheet structure necessary to maximize machine performance and end user demands. A narrow balance exists in attaining the desired retention and formation particularly in systems with heavier ash loads and producing paper and paper board on higher speed high shear equipment. A new generation of both cationic and anionic micropolymer technologies has been developed. These water based chemistries are volatile organic compound (VOC) and alkyphenol ethoxylate (APE) free. When these novel micropolymers are applied with linear poly-acrylamide or in conjunction with inorganic microparticle technologies (such as silica or swellable minerals), substantial increases in drainage, fibre retention and ash retention are observed. These improvements have been observed not only in high filled wood and non wood containing grades such as fine paper and super calendared sheets (SCA), but also in low filled newsprint grades. Of particular note is the drainage improvement seen with the application of the cationic micropolymers in unbleached packaging grades with poly-acrylamide.
For the purpose of antibacterial and photocatalystic deodorization functions, the papermaking inorganic fillers and pigments were surface-modified with Ag nano-colloidal solution and $TiO_2$ by using the hybridization technique. The functional specialty sheets and coating papers were produced with the surface-modified fillers and pigments, and evaluated by halo test and inhibition growth test in their antibacterial and photocatalystic characteristics. For the application of specially produced antibacterial handsheet to the wallpaper usages, the photocatalyst efficiency test of benzene in volatile organic compound dissolution experiment of antibacterial and deodorization function wallpaper showed that the efficiency was 45~50% for 80 min of reaction time and 90% of attained resolution was reached at approximately 30 min of response time.

This study was carried out to evaluate the temporal variations of VOCs at an urban site, and to compare the concentrations of VOCs at an urban site in Daegu with those at a suburban site in Gyeongsan. Three hourly VOC samples in the ambient air were collected using a sequential tube sampler (STS 25, Perkin Elmer) throughout two weeks during May and July representing spring and summer seasons, respectively. The VOC concentrations were determined by an automatic thermal desorption apparatus with GC/MS analysis. A total of 12 VOCs of environmental concern were determined, which are chloroform, benzene, trichloroethylene, toluene, tetra-chloroethylene, ethylbenzene, m+p-xylenes, o-xylene, styrene, 1,3,5- and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzenes. Among 12 target VOCs, the most abundant compound appeared to be toluene, being followed by xylenes. The mean concentrations at the urbn site were 1.2 pub for benzene and 20.4 ppb for toluene (n=221) while the mean levels at the suburban site were 0.9 ppb and 4.3 ppb for benzene and toluene (n=96), respectively. The urban site concentrations were typically several-fold higher than those measured at the suburban site. It was found that general trends of VOC levels were significantly dependent on traffic conditions at the sampling site since VOC concentrations were at their maximum during rush hours, i.e. $9{\sim}12a.m$ and $6{\sim}9p.m$. Statistical investigations were conducted to investigate any significant relationships between VOC concentrations and affecting factors. Calculated correlation coefficients among VOCs were positively significant at a level of 0.05 in most cases. Increased concentrations of toluene in the urban site were estimated to reflect the effect of large industrial sources, mainly from textile industry.
