The area of discourse analysis has long neglected the value of images as a semiotic resource in communication. This paper suggests that like language, images are rich in meaning potential and are governed by visual grammar structures which can be utilized to decode the meanings of images. Employing a theoretical framework in visual communication, two digital images are examined for their representational and interactive dimensions and the dimensions' relation to the magazine advertisement genre. The results show that the framework identified narrative and conceptual processes, relations between participants and viewers, and symbolic attributes of the images, which all contribute to the sociological interpretations of the images. The identities and relationships between viewers and participants suggested in the images signify desirable qualities that may be associated to the product of the advertiser. The findings support the theory of visual grammar and highlight the potential of images to convey multi-layered meanings.

본 연구는 빠르게 발전하는 음성 기반의 디바이스가 스크린 중심의 미디어 멀티태스킹 환경에 어떤 변화를 가져올 수 있을지 확인하고자 했다. 서로 다른 자원 구조를 가진 과업을 동시에 수행할 때 정보 처리 효율이 높아진다는 이론적 근거를 토대로, 시각 주의가 필요한 과제와 음성 또는 스크린 기반의 디바이스를 활용해 정보를 검색하는 과업을 동시에 수행하는 실험이 진행되었다. 실험 결과, 과업수행 환경과 인터페이스 감각양식은 모두 인지부하에 유의미한 영향을 미쳤다. 음성 인터페이스 그룹에서 전반적으로 인지부하 수준이 높게 나타났는데, 단독으로 사용된 단일 과업 조건보다 시각 과제를 동시에 수행한 다중 과업 조건에서 시각 인터페이스 그룹과의 차이가 줄어들었다. 과업 수행도의 경우 음성 인터페이스 그룹에서 시각 과제에 대한 수행능력이 시각 인터페이스 그룹보다 더 높게 측정되었다. 이러한 결과는 멀티태스킹 환경에서 음성 인터페이스를 사용했을 때 동시적 과업을 청각 경로와 시각 경로로 나누어 처리함으로써 인지부하와 과업수행에 이점이 나타났음을 의미한다. 이는 시각 자원의 충돌이 발생하기 쉬운 스크린 중심의 미디어 멀티태스킹 환경에서 음성 기반의 디바이스가 효율적 정보 처리를 촉진시키는 잠재적 역할을 할 수 있다는 함의점을 제공한다. 본 연구는 다중 자원 이론을 통해 자원의 분산처리에 대한 이론적 증거를 제시하고, 스레드 인지 모델을 기반으로 음성 인터페이스를 활용했을 때의 이점을 더욱 구체적으로 규명하고자 했다.

In Korea, a regulation of visual impact evaluation on development plan in natural environment is provided at the Natural Environment Conservation Act, but it was difficult to obtained the effectiveness enough to conserve natural landscape. So, the visual impact review on development plan is introduced to the act, through the revision of the Natural Environment Conservation Act in 2005. The basic directions of visual impact review are preservation, restoration, view protection, and harmony. The items of review are as follows; (1) development alternations for the provided plan, (2) executive reduction plan of visual impacts including consideration of growth of plants, (3) deliberation process between persons or parties concerned, etc. For rapid settlement of visual impact review system, it needs that the validity, the reliability, and the objectivity should be confirmed through steady research about reasonable guidance of review.

In this paper, we propose a visual accessibility technique in an MPEG-21 framework. In particular, MPEG-21 visual accessibility for the colored-visual resource of a digital item is proposed to give better accessibility of color information to people with color vision deficiency (CVD). We propose an adaptation system for CVD as well as a description of CVD in MPEG-21. To verify the usefulness of the proposed method, computer simulations with CVD and color adaptation were performed. Furthermore, a statistical experiment was performed using volunteers with CVD in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed visual accessibility technique in MPEG-21. Both the experimental and simulation results show that the proposed adaptations technique can provide better color information, particularly to people with CVD.

Cervical cancer remains the most frequent cancer in women from the developing world. More than 88% of deaths occur in low-income countries, and it is predicted to climb to 91.5% by 2030. Although Pap-based screening programmes have shown to be effective in reducing the disease burden in high-resource countries, implementation and sustention of cytology-based programmes is quite challenging in low-resource settings. The present paper reviews evidence-based alternatives of screening methods, triaging algorithm, treatment of cervical precancerous lesions, and age-group at screening appropriate for low-income countries. Evidence shows that visual inspection methods using diluted acid acetic or Lugol's iodine, and HPV-DNA testing are more sensitive tests than the Pap-smear screening test. Visual inspection allows an immediate result and, when appropriate, may be immediately followed by cryotherapy, the so called "screen-and-treat" approach, achieved in a single visit, by trained nurses and midwives. Examples of cervical cancer prevention programmes in India and selected low-income countries are given.

본 논문에서는 협업 가상 환경이 보다 더 높은 현실감을 제공하도록 고해상도 tiled-display 에 기반을 둔 촉감 협업 시스템의 구조 및 구현 방법을 제안한다. 또한 이 시스템에서 QoE (quality of experience)의 수준을 높일 수 있는 기법을 제안한다. 촉각 기반 시스템과 고해상도 tiled-display를 위한 시스템은 각각 컴퓨터의 자원에 대한 요구조건이 있다. 촉각 시스템의 요구조건은 햅틱 디바이스의 햅틱 렌더링 반복 속도이다. 1kHz 이상의 렌더링 속도를 만족시키지 못하면 햅틱 장비는 불안정해지며 촉감 기반 협업을 방해한다. 그리고 tiled-display는 동영상을 디스플레이하기 위해서 일정 속도 이상으로 새로운 화면을 갱신 시켜야 한다. 일반적으로 햅틱 시스템과 tiled-display 시스템을 각각 사용하면 각각의 요구들을 만족시킬 수 있지만 두 시스템을 함께 사용하면 컴퓨터의 지원 부족에 의해 전체 시스템 성능이 저하되고 사용자의 QoE를 만족시키기 어려워진다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 QoE 를 높일 수 있는 구조로 tiled-display 기반 햅틱 협업 시스템을 구현하고 또한 상황에 따른 사용자의 감각적 우선순위를 파악하여 디스플레이 업데이트 주기와 햅틱 렌더링 주기를 선택적으로 조율함으로써 제한된 지원을 효율적으로 이용하고 시스템 전체의 QoE를 높일 수 있는 기법을 제안한다.

The mechanisms underlying the visual assessment and resulting in optimum embryonic development following in vitro maturation, fertilization, and culture are unclear. It is known that in vitro produced embryos show more frequent occurrence of fragmentation, which result in poor developmental potential and decreased implantation rate.
