  • This study was designed to examine the difference in visual attention between the evaluations of facial attractiveness and facial trustworthiness, both of which may be the two most fundamental social evaluation for forming first impressions under various types of social interactions. In study 1, participants were asked to evaluate the attractiveness and trustworthiness of 40 new faces while their gaze directions being recorded using an eye-tracker. The analysis revealed that participants spent significantly longer gaze fixation time while examining certain facial features such as eyes and nose during the evaluation of facial trustworthiness, as compared to facial attractiveness. In study 2, participants performed the same face evaluation tasks, except that a word was briefly displayed on a certain facial feature in each face trial, which were then followed by unexpected recall tests of the previously viewed words. The analysis demonstrated that the recognition rate of the words that had been presented on the nose was significantly higher for the task of facial trustworthiness vs. facial attractiveness evaluation. These findings suggest that the evaluation of facial trustworthiness may be distinguished by that of facial attractiveness in terms of the allocation of attentional resources.

  • Purpose: The clinical and radiographic outcomes of the internal fixation, which were executed on patients over the age of 65 with proximal humerus fracture by using a polyaxial angular stable locking compression plate (Non-Contact-Bridging proximal humerus plate, Zimmer, Switzerland, NCB), were evaluated. Materials and Methods: Thirty two patients over the age of 65 among the proximal humerus fracture treated with NCB plate, between August 2007 and January 2011, were chosen as the subjects. The average age of patients was 71 years, and the average postoperative follow-up period was 11.5 months. The fractures included 14 two-part and 18 three-part fractures. The clinical results were evaluated, using the visual analog scale (VAS) score and the Constant score. The radiological results were evaluated by time to union and Paavolainen method, which measures the neck shaft angle. Results: At the last follow-up examination, the mean VAS score was 3 points and the mean Constant score was 64.5 points, with bone union achieved after the average of 16.2 weeks following the surgery in all the cases. The mean neck shaft angle was 125.9 and 24 cases had good results, while 8 cases had fair results by Paavolainen method, at the last follow-up. There were 1 case of delayed union and cerclage wire failure, and 3 cases of subacromial impingement. There were no complications, such as loss of reduction, nonunion, screw loosening, or avascular necrosis of the humeral head. Conclusion: Internal fixation, using a NCB plate, was considered to be an effective surgical method in treating proximal humerus fracture in the elderly patients, on whom the fixation of the fracture and maintenance of reduction are difficult.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the understanding of visual perception and to extend the landscape evaluation area by comparing eye-tracking evaluation and landscape adjective evaluation methods towards various type of nightscapes. As a result of the study, it showed that 'blink count', 'fixation duration average', and 'saccade duration average' of eye tracking measurements have a significant correlation with 'beautiful', 'interesting', 'accessible', 'satisfying', and 'safe' regarding landscape adjectives. In addition, there was a tendency toward areas of interests (AOIs) depending on 12 different nightscapes, which showed that the gaze was fixated by focusing on certain landscape elements such as 'door' and 'signs'. These results suggest that the eye-tracking method is an effective tool to specify the evaluation of 'landscape elements' rather than the 'whole landscape' and can be used as a basis to support landscape preference theories, which has been presented as conceptual only. In this way, the results of this study demonstrated the possibility of various applications of eye tracking as an objective landscape evaluation technique, and it is possible to suggest specific implications to landscape planning through the accumulation of continuous research results.

  • Purpose: Bone grafting is often necessary to maintain a reduction and prevent delayed collapse of reduced fracture in a treatment of severely displaced comminuted intra-articular calcaneal fractures. Herein, we analyzed the usefulness and necessary conditions to perform tricortical-allobone grafting in open reduction of calcaneal fracture via the Ollier approach. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective review of 57 intra-articular calcaneal fractures that underwent an operation via the Ollier approach between April 2009 and April 2015. They were divided into two groups: Group 1 (n=17) included those with tricortical-allobone grafts underneath the posterior facet fragment, and group 2 (n=40) included cases without a bone graft. We measured the $B{\ddot{o}}hler$ angle, Gissane angle, height, and width of the calcaneus at preoperative, postoperative, and final follow-up radiograph. We measured the sagittal rotational angle of the posterior facet fragment of preoperative computed tomography to analyze the effect and necessary conditions for bone grafting. We also reviewed the clinical results by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scale, visual analogue scale (VAS), and any complications. Results: According to the Sanders classification, there were 3 type-II fractures, 12 type-III fractures, and 2 type-IV fractures in Group 1; whereas in Group 2, there were 26 type-II fractures, 13 type-III fractures, and 1 type-IV fracture (p=0.002). Regarding the preoperative radiologic parameters, there were significant differences in the $B{\ddot{o}}hler$ angle (p=0.006), Gissane angle (p=0.043), and rotational angle of the posterior facet fragment (p=0.001). No significant difference was observed in the preoperative calcaneal height and width, as well as postoperative radiologic parameters. There was no significant clinical difference between the two groups (p=0.546). Conclusion: We suggest that a tricortical-allobone graft may be useful in open reduction and screw fixation via the Ollier approach for displaced intra-articular calcaneal fracture with a bony defect after reduction of collapsed posterior facet fragment. This graft can contribute to the stable reduction via a small approach, even without a plate.

  • Detecting human face and facial landmarks automatically in an image is as essential step to a fully automatic face recognition system. In this paper, we present a new approach to detect automatically face and its eyes of input image with scale and rotation variations of faces by using an intensity based template matching with a single log-polar face template. In a template-based matching it is necessary to normalize the scale changes and rotations of an input image to a template ones. The log-polar mapping which simulates space-variant human visual system converts scale changes and rotations of input image into constant horizontal and cyclic vertical shifts in the output plane. Intelligent use of this property allows us to shift of the candidate log-polar faces mapped at various fixation points of an input image to be matched to a template over the log-polar plane. Thus, the proposed method eliminates the need of adapting multitemplate and multiresolution schemes, which inevitably give rise to intensive computation involved to cope with scale and rotation variations of faces. Through this scale and rotation involved to cope with scale and method can lead to detecting face and its eyes simultaneously. Experimental results on a database of 795 images show over 98% detection rate.

  • Bilateral convergent strabismus with exophthalmus(BCSE) is an eye disorder affecting many cattle breeds worldwide. BCSE is the most common in cattle at various types of strabismus. Divergent strabismus is of relatively low incidence than convergent strabismus. This report is the to shown a case of convergent and divergent strabismus with unilateral in the exophthalmus in a heifer Holstein cow. A female Holstein calf born with congenital progressive divergent strabismus in right eye and convergent strabismus in left eye was tested. Ocular and blood examination, and activity were checked from the first week, 8 month, and 16 month after birth. The ocular examination includes general inspection, fixation reflex and menace response. The general inspection is checking the degree of deviation of both eyes from the normal visual axis, which was determined by the amount of sclera permanently visible in the temporal corner of the eye. The stage is divided into 4 stages depending on the degree of deviation. The right eye shown in stage 4 continues after birth and the left eye shown stage 2, stage 3 and stage 4 at 1 week, 8 month and 16 month after birth, respectively. In fixation reflex and Menace response, both eye balls showed a normal response at 1 week, 8 month and 16 month after birth. Blood count and serum chemistry test were performed, but a specific factor was not detected outside the reference range.

  • Objective : The authors performed a retrospective study to assess the clinical and radiological outcome in symptomatic lumbar spondylolysis patients who underwent a direct pars repair surgery using two different surgical methods; pedicle screw with universal hook system (PSUH) and direct pars screw fixation (DPSF), and compared the results between two different treated groups. Methods : Forty-seven consecutive patients (PSUH; 23, DPSF; 15) with symptomatic lumbar spondylolysis who underwent a direct pars repair surgery were included. The average follow-up period was 37 months in the PSUH group, and 28 months in the DPSF group. The clinical outcome was measured using visual analogue pain scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI). The length of operation time, the amount of blood loss, the duration of hospital stay, surgical complications, and fusion status were also assessed. Results : When compared to the DPSF group, the average preoperative VAS and ODI score of the PSUH group were less decreased at the last follow-up; (the PSUH group; back VAS : 4.9 vs. 3.0, leg VAS : 6.8 vs. 2.2, ODI : 50.6% vs. 24.6%, the DPSF group; back VAS : 5.7 vs. 1.1, leg VAS : 6.1 vs. 1.2, ODI : 57.4% vs. 18.2%). The average operation time was 174.9 minutes in the PSUH group, and 141.7 minutes in the DPSF group. The average blood loss during operation was 468.8 cc in the PSUH group, and 298.8 cc in the DPSF group. The average hospital stay after operation was 8.9 days in the PSUH group, and 7 days in the DPSF group. In the PSUH group, there was one case of a screw misplacement requiring revision surgery. In the DPSF group, one patient suffered from transient leg pain. The successful bone fusion rate was 78.3% in the PSUH group, and 93.3% in the DPSF group. Conclusion : The present study suggests that the technique using direct pars screw would be more effective than the method using pedicle screw with lamina hook system, in terms of decreased operation time, amount of blood loss, hospital stay, and increased fusion success rate, as well as better clinical outcome.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a HAM (Heuristic Attention Model) by analyzing the difference between eye movements according to the science achievement of elementary school students on discrimination task. Science achievement was graded by the results of the Korea national achievement test conducted in 2012 for a random sampling of classes. As an assessment tool to check discrimination task, two discrimination measure problems from TSPS (Test of Science Process Skill, developed in 1994) which were suitable for an eye tracking system were adopted. The subjects of this study were 20 students from the sixth grade who agreed to participate in the research. SMI was used to collect EMD (eye movement data). Experiment 3.2 and BeGaze 3.2 programs were used to plan experiments and analyze EMD. As a result, eye movements of participants in discrimination tasks varied greatly in counts and duration of fixation, first fixation duration, and dwell time, according to students' science achievement and difficulty of the problems. By the analysis of EMD, strategies of the students' problem-solving could be found. During problem solving, subjects' eye movements were affected by visual attention; bottom-up attention, top-down attention and convert attention, and aflunter attention. In conclusion, HAM was developed, and it is believed to help in the development of a science learning program for underachievers.

  • Objective : In an aging society, the number of patients with symptomatic degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) is increasing and there is an emerging need for fusion surgery. However, few studies have compared transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) and lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) for the treatment of patients with DS. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and radiological outcomes between TLIF and LLIF in DS. Methods : We enrolled patients with symptomatic DS at L4-5 who underwent TLIF with open pedicle screw fixation (TLIF group, n=41) or minimally invasive LLIF with percutaneous pedicle screw fixation (LLIF group, n=39) and were followed-up for more than one year. Clinical (visual analog scale and Oswestry disability index) and radiological outcomes (spondylolisthesis rate, segmental sagittal angle [SSA], mean disc height [MDH], intervertebral foramen height [FH], cage subsidence, and fusion rate) were assessed. And we assessed the changes in radiological parameters between the postoperative and the last follow-up periods. Results : Preoperative radiological parameters were not significantly different between the two groups. LLIF was significantly superior to TLIF in immediate postoperative radiological results, including reduction of spondylolisthesis rate (3.8% and 7.2%), increase in MDH (13.9 mm and 10.3 mm) and FH (21.9 mm and 19.4 mm), and correction of SSA ($18.9^{\circ}$ and $15.6^{\circ}$) (p<0.01), and the changes were more stable from the postoperative period to the last follow-up (p<0.01). Cage subsidence was observed significantly less in LLIF (n=6) than TLIF (n=21). Fusion rate was not different between the two groups. The clinical outcomes did not differ significantly at any time point between the two groups. Complications were not statistically significant. However, TLIF showed chronic mechanical problems with screw loosening in four patients and LLIF showed temporary symptoms associated with the surgical approach, such as psoas and ileus muscle symptoms in three and two cases, respectively. Conclusion : LLIF was more effective than TLIF for spondylolisthesis reduction, likely due to the higher profile cage and ligamentotactic effect. In addition, LLIF showed mechanical stability of the reduction level by using a cage with a larger footprint. Therefore, LLIF should be considered a surgical option before TLIF for patients with unstable DS.

  • The recent works of architecture and interior design take on too various aspects to be classified as a trend or tendency. Many subjects, seeking the superiority between form and function in space which was the issue of Modernism, got to face the works which transcend the limitation of architecture due to the development of a variety of media and technology these days. In result, we could see the works which are to be Included into the category of art rather than architecture. This study starts from the thought that the common aspects of these works are based on the strangeness to pursue uniqueness, peculiarities or novelty. 'The subject of this study, $'D\acute{e}paysement'$, creates a new relation, disconnected from customs, to an architecture which became familiar through defragment, fixation and abstraction by the habitual relation and makes it reborn as an architecture which gives us a fantasy and a pleasure, by converting into the shape and image which are different from its original shape when a stimulus is given to an architecture. This study starts from the artistic aspect which has a close correlation with the architecture. The subject, $'D\acute{e}paysement'$ could be historically considered in two aspects - $D\acute{e}paysement$ of Surrealism which developed in paintings and Defamiliarization of Russian Formalism in the area of literature. This study is carried in a category of $D\acute{e}paysement$, focusing on the visual aspect of the architecture. This study is composed as follows: In chapter 2, a theoretical research is performed according to the definition and meaning of the $D\acute{e}paysement$ expression techniques, its origination and evolution, and type classification by the features of expression techniques in the era of Surrealism when $D\acute{e}paysement$ developed most vigorously in the area of art. In chapter 3, the system which formalizes the expression method of the techniques is presented, focusing on the case analysis of the artistic works according to the types of $D\acute{e}paysement$. In chapter 4, the application of the expression techniques of $D\acute{e}paysement$ is discussed by conducting cases analysis of the modern interior design.
