Temperature Data Visualization for Condition Monitoring based on Wireless Sensor Network (무선 센서 네트워크 기반의 상태 모니터링을 위한 온도 데이터 시각화)

  • Unexpected equipment defects can cause a huge economic losses in the society at large. Although condition monitoring can provide solutions, the signal processing algorithms must be developed to predict mechanical failures using data acquired from various sensors attached to the equipment. The signal processing algorithms used in a condition monitoring requires high computing efficiency and resolution. To improve condition monitoring on a wireless sensor network(WSN), data visualization can maximize the expressions of the data characteristics. Thus, this paper proposes the extraction of visual feature from temperature data over time using condition monitoring based on a WSN to identify environmental conditions of equipment in a large-scale infrastructure. Our results show that time-frequency analysis can visually track temperature changes over time and extract the characteristics of temperature data changes.

Construction Management System using Mobile Augmented Reality (건설 공정 모니터링을 위한 모바일 증강현실 시스템)

  • In this paper, we propose an AR system which enables monitoring and managing of the operation process of the construction site. In case of the conventional construction managing system, a worker takes several images of the construction site and sends them directly to the supervisory headquarter, which manages the progress of the construction process and checks weather the construction is achieved according to the architectural design or not. Due to the nature of the offline process, the conventional management system has time and monetary constraints, and there exists a disadvantage that it is impossible to make quick decision-making and real-time communication with the work site. In order to minimize these disadvantages, we proposes an AR real-time construction monitoring/management system. In particular, we aim to developed a system based on mobile device so that it can maximize usability. The efficiency of the proposed system is verified through several experiments and implementation results.

Point Symbols on Tourist Maps: Cognitive Characteristics with Levels of Symbolization and Preference (관광지도 점기호의 상징수준과 선호도에 나타난 인지특성 연구)

  • This research deals with cognitive characteristics of point symbols on the current tourist maps in terms of the communication theory in considering levels of symbolization and those of preference. The levels of symbolization are examined on the basis of the meaning of point symbols between map-makers and map-users. Preferences of point symbols are investigated by the tourist objects. As a result, when point symbols are expressed in conciseness, the meaning and interpretation about those symbols are highly accorded. And the point symbols that have familiarity by visual experience are preferred. Also, the higher symbolical levels symbols have, the more likely they are preferred. Through that fact, familiarity from the visual experience, conciseness in expression, concreteness of figures expressed in maps, and representativeness of visualized properties were deduced as factors that affect preferences. Those factors work to affect preference complicatedly, but familiarity is prior to simplicity in preferences. Likewise, ways that visualize information, contents that are expressed as images and familiarity in terms of cognitive characteristics make a relative difference in preferences and the levels of symbolization. On the basis of those cognitive characteristics, visual complexity and ambiguity should be removed and the higher symbolical level of point symbols for efficiency of map-reading should be developed.

A study on the attribute of infotainment design (인포테인먼트 디자인의 개념 연구)

  • It is very important issue in information design to improve information efficiency by adapting interesting factors in changing circumstance of information communication. The concept of infotainment is utilized in designing information contents in a way of combining entertainment factors with information itself based on various media and representation technologies. The information arousing user's attention, which includes interesting factors, is persuasive message comppared to the informative message conveying only information itself. The reason why infotainment is persuasive is because it makes the user absorb deeply in the information during the process of understanding by sensorial stimuli, cognitive interest, and situational interest. The sensorial stimuli originates from the expression elements of information design. The cognitive interest from the user's intellectual activities has a try to overcome mental block when user confronts with the redundant expression in the manner of unexpectedness and inharmony. The situational interest originates from user's optimum experience by the flow of satisfaction. Therefore, the attribute of infotainment is defined with the stimuli, the redundancy, and user's satisfaction. Its design elements consist of physical factors, organizational factors, and psychological factors. The physical factors through sensorial stimuli are utilized by visual manipulation such as visual analogy or visual pun, multimedia, and moving expression. The organizational factors through redundant expression bring user's imagination by adapting storytelling, event, and interaction in the process of understanding information. The psychological factors through expression of entertainment interests such as humor, play, and game give users psychological satisfaction with the flow. In conclusion the concept of infotainment can be adapted when the design factors should be integrated with its attributes, or the conveying information should go well with its purpose and characteristics.

A Transmission Service Method for Processing Visual Recognition of Sender Information (발신자 정보에 대한 시각적 인식 처리를 위한 전송 서비스 기법)

  • Recently a mobile service is changing into a system environment that offers the customer various contents service. Representative example of service is a Calling Identity Del ivory Service(CID). Such service has the problem in the case which the receiver cannot remember the phone number of the sender; it has a difficult problem that cannot easily confirm whose the phone number it is. Therefore, it is desirable to design and implement visual services that can enhance the recognition of users. In this paper, we propose the architecture that is similar to a Calling Identity Delivery Service. We propose the architecture for communication service and system that is able to visually display the information of the sender using 2D image data in mobile environment. After that we set the image information to represent the user and this method is able to visually display the information of the sender by transmitting an image data through channels from switch station or base station using the server. When the receiver receives a phone call from the sender, this method provides an efficient service by transmitting visual data with bell sound. That is, the image information of sender is appeared on liquid crystal display(LCD) of the receiver at the same time. We investigate the concepts for processing real-time transmission of image data and describe an example of the implementation result that is based on system. This technology has a potential influence on the marketing and presents an efficiency of this method.

Aggregated Encoder Control Exploiting Interlayer Statistical Characteristics for Advanced Terrestrial-DMB (지상파 DMB 고도화망에서 계층간 통계적 특성을 이용한 통합 부호기 제어)

  • The SVC (Scalable Video Coding) scheme can be effectively used for reducing the redundancy and for improving the coding efficiency but, it requires very high computational complexities. In order to accelerate the successful standardization and commercialization of the Advanced Terrestrial-DMB service, it is necessary to overcome this problem. For this aim, in this paper, we propose an efficient aggregated encoder control algorithm, which shows better performances than the conventional control scheme. Computer simulation result shows that the proposed scheme performs about up to 0.3dB better than those of the conventional scheme. Additionally, based on this control scheme, we propose a fast mode decision method by constraining the redundant coding modes based on the statistical properties of the quantization parameter in the spatial scalable encoder. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed control schemes reduce the heavy computational burden up to 12% compared to the conventional scheme, while keeping the objective visual qualify very high.

A Study of Synesthesia Used in Public Advertising (공익포스터의 공감각적 표현 연구)

  • A variety of methods are used in public advertising to make message persuasive. In order for posters to be more appealing, one good way is to use synesthesia. This study analyzed how synesthesia were used for effective communication. The case analysis is based on the prize winning advertisements chosen by the Korea Broadcast Advertising Corporation. According to the study, synesthesia maximize the efficiency of information delivery. Secondly, in the public campaign posters, sight was the most frequently used sensory element, followed by touch, hearing, smell and taste, respectively. Third, visual tactility was mostly used in nature and environment related posters to effectively deliver the messages. In the topic of social community campaigning, visualization of hearing was applied the most. Lastly, when more than three multisensory stimulations were present in the public campaign, the strongest sense stimulus played the largest part in making message delivery more efficient. The results of this study are expected to provide a scientific basis for future campaign posters that synesthesia expression elements are applied.

  • The importance of a using the visual media in English education has been increased. By an importance of Characters in English language content, the more effort is needed for a learner to show the English pronunciation and a realistic implementation. In this paper, we tried to review the Syntax-based Educational Contents Authoring System. For the more realistic lip-sync character, 3D character to enhance the efficiency of the education was constructed. We used a chart of the association structure analysis of mouth's shape. we produced an optimized 3D character through a process of a concept, a modeling, a mapping and an animating design. For more effective educational content for 3D character creation, the next research will be continuously a 3d Character added to a hand motion and body motion in order to show an effective communication example.

Study on development of vessel shore report management system for IMO MSP 8

  • In this study, a Vessel Shore Report Management System (VSRMS) is developed for the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Maritime Service Portfolio (MSP) Number 8, which comprises vessel shore reporting. Several documents have to be completed before the arrival/departure of a vessel at a port, as each national port has its own reporting format and data. The present vessel reporting system is inefficient, time-consuming, and involves excessive paperwork, which results in duplications and errors. To solve this problem, in this study, the vessel reporting formats and data contents of various national ports are investigated, as at present, the reporting documents required by the current IMO standard includes insufficient information which is requested by national ports. Initially, the vessel reporting information of various national ports are collected and analyzed. Subsequently, a database structure for managing vessel reporting data for ports worldwide is devised. To make the transfer of data and the exchange of information of vessel reports much more reliable, efficient, and paper-free, VSRMS, which is a software application for the simplification and facilitation of vessel report formalities, is developed. This application is developed using the latest Microsoft C#.Net Programming Language in the Microsoft Visual Studio framework 4.5. It provides a user interface and a backend MySQL server used for database management. SAP Crystal Reports 2013 is used for designing and generating vessel reports in the original report formats. The VSRMS can facilitate vessel reporting and improve data accuracy through the reduction of input data, efficient data exchange, and reduction of the cost of communication. Adoption of the VSRMS will allow the vessel shore reporting system to be automated, resulting in enhanced work efficiency for shipping companies. Based on this information system and architecture, the consensus of various international organizations, such as the IMO, the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), the Federation of National Associations of Ship Brokers and Agents (FONASBA), and the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO), is required so that vessel reporting is standardized internationally.
