A three-dimensional numerical analysis of the flow and heat transfer characteristic of wood-flour-filled polypropylene melt in an extrusion die was carried out Used for this analysis were Finite Concept Method based on FVM, unstructured grid and non-Newtonian fluid viscosity model. Temperature and flow fields are closely coupled through temperature dependent viscosity and viscous dissipation. With large Peclet, Nahme, Brinkman numbers, viscous heating caused high temperature belt near die housing, Changing taper plate thickness and examining some predefined parameters at die exit investigated the effect of taper plate on velocity and temperature uniformities. In the presence of taper plate, uniformity at die exit could be improved and there existed an optimum thickness to maximize it.

A numerical calculation is carried out for the analysis of 3-dimensional compressible flow field in axial-flow rotating blades by using finite element method. The calculation of flow in impellers plays a dominant role in the theoretical research and design of turbomachines. Three-dimensional flow fields can be obtained by the quasi-three-dimensional iterative calculation of the flows both on blade-to-blade stream surfaces and hub-to-shroud stream surfaces with the introduction of viscous loss model in order to consider a loss due to viscosity of fluid. In devising the loss model, four primary sources of losses were identified: (1) blade profile loss (2) end wall loss (3) secondary flow loss (4) tip-leakage loss. For the consideration of an axially parabolic distribution of loss, the results of present calcullation are well agreed with the results by experiment, thus the introduction of loss model is proved to be valid.

Analyses of the viscous and end effects on electromagnetic (EM) pumps of annular linear induction type for the sodium coolant circulation in Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactors have been carried out based on the MHD laminar flow analysis and the electromagnetic field theory. A one-dimensional MHD analysis for the liquid metal flowing through an annular channel has been performed on the basis of a simplified model of equivalent current sheets instead of three-phase currents in the discrete primary windings. The calculations show that the developed pressure difference resulted from electromagnetic and viscous forces in the liquid metal is expressed in terms of the slip, and that the viscous loss effects are negligible compared with electromagnetic driving forces except in the low-slip region where the pumps operate with very high flow velocities comparable with the synchronous velocity of the electromagnetic fields, which is not applicable to the practical EM pumps. A two-dimensional electromagnetic field analysis based on an equivalent current sheet model has found the vector potentials in closed form by means of the Fourier transform method. The resultant magnetic fields and driving forces exerted on the liquid metal reveal that the end effects due to finiteness of the pump length are formidable. In addition, a two-dimensional numerical analysis for vector potentials has been performed by the SOR iterative method on a realistic EM pump model with discretely-distributed currents in the primary windings. The numerical computations for the distributions of magnetic fields and developed pressure differences along the pump axial length also show considerable end effects at both inlet and outlet ends, especially at high flow velocities. Calculations of each magnetic force contribution indicate that the end effects are originated from the magnetic force caused by the induced current ( u x B ) generated by the liquid metal movement across the magnetic field rather than the one (E) produced by externally applied magnetic fields by three-phase winding currents. It is concluded that since the influences of the end effects in addition to viscous losses are extensive particularly in high-velocity operations of the EM pumps, it is necessary to find ways to suppress them, such as proper selection of the pump parameters and compensation of the end effects.
The present paper is concerned with non-isothermal spherical Couette flow of Oldroyd-B fluid in the annular region between two concentric spheres. The inner sphere rotates with a uniform angular velocity while the outer sphere is kept at rest. Moreover, the two spherical boundaries are maintained at fixed temperature values. Hence, the fluid is effect by two heat sources; namely, the viscous heating and the temperature gradient between the two spheres. The viscoelasticity of the fluid is assumed to dominate the inertia such that the latter can be neglected. An approximate analytical solution of the energy and momentum equations is obtained through the expansion of the dynamical fields in power series of Nahme number. The analysis show that, the temperature variation due to the external source appears in the zero order solution and its effect extends to the fluid velocity distribution up to present second order. Viscous heating contributes in the first and second order solutions. In contrast to isothermal case, a first order axial velocity and a second order stream function fields has been appeared. Moreover, at higher orders the temperature distribution depends on the gap width between the two spheres. Finally, there exist a thermal distribution of positive and negative values depend on their positions in the domain region between the two spheres.

In the Lagrangian vortex particle method based on the vorticity-velocity formulation for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, a numerical scheme for calculating pressure fields is presented. Implementation of the numerical method is directly connected with the well-established surface panel methods, just by dealing with the dynamic coupling among vorticity field. Assuming the vorticity and the velocity fields are to be calculated in time domain analysis, the pressure calculation for a complete set of solution at present time step is performed in a similar way to the one used in the Eulerian description. For a validation of the present method, we illustrate the early development of the viscous flow about an impulsive started circular cylinder for Reynolds number 550. The comparative study with the Eulerian finite Volume method provides an extensive understanding and application of the mesh-free Lagrangian vortex methods for numerical simulation of viscous flows around arbitrary bodies of general shape.
It is known that tip clearance flows reduce the pressure rin, flow range and efficiency of the turbomachinery. So, the clear understanding about flow fields in the tip region is needed to efficiently design the turbomachinery. The Navier-Stokes code with the proper treatment of the boundary conditions has been developed to analyze the three-dimensional steady viscous flow fields in the transonic rotating blades and a numerical study has been conducted to investigate the detail flow physics in the tip region of transonic rotor, NASA Rotor 67. The computational results in the tip region of transonic rotors show the leakage vortices, leakage flow from pressure side to suction side and their interaction with a shock Depending on the operating conditions, the position of shock-wave on the blade surface are v8y different close to the blade tip of the transonic compressor rotor. The shock-wave position dose to the blade tip had the dose relationship with the starting position of leakage vortex and the direction of leakage flow.
Numerical analysis of three-dimensional viscous flow-fields in the turbine rotor passages is carried out to investigate flow physics including the interaction between secondary vortices, tip leakage vortex, and the rotor wake. The blade tip geometry is accurately modeled adopting the embedded H grid topology. An explicit four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme is used for the time integration of both the mean flow and turbulence equations. The computational results for the entire turbine rotor flows, particularly the tip clearance flow and the secondary flows, are interpreted and compared with the experimental data from the Penn State turbine stage. Good agreement between the experimental data and the numerical prediction was achieved in the sense of the major features of the flow fields.

Viscous flow fields of side-by-side arranged two-dimensional floating bodies are numerically simulated by a Navier-Stokes equation solver. Two identical bodies with a narrow gap are forced to heave and sway motions. Square and rounded bilge hull forms are compared to find out the effects of vortex shedding on damping force. Wave height, force RAOs, added mass and damping coefficients including non-diagonal cross coefficients are calculated and a similarity between the wave height and force RAOs is discussed. CFD which can take into account of viscous damping and vortex shedding shows better results than linear potential theory.
The paper deals with the study of the mechanical time-harmonic forced vibration of the hydro-piezoelectric system consisting of the piezoelectric plate and compressible viscous fluid with finite depth. The exact equations of motion of the theory of linear electro-elasticity for piezoelectric materials are employed for describing the plate motion, however, the fluid flow is described by employing the linearized Navier-Stokes equations for a compressible (barotropic) viscous fluid. The plane-strain state in the plate and the plane flow of the fluid are considered and the corresponding mathematical problems are solved by employing the Fourier transform with respect to the space coordinate which is on the coordinate axis directed along the platelying direction. The expressions of the corresponding Fourier transform are determined analytically, however, the inverse transforms are found numerically. Numerical results on the interface pressure and the electrical potential are obtained for various PZT materials and these results are discussed. According to these results, in particular, it is established that the electromechanical coupling effect can significantly decrease the interface pressure.
This paper presents the numerical analysis results of the viscous flow for a full ship model. The mass and momentum conservation equations are used for governing equations, and the flow field is discretized by the Finite-Volume Method for the numerical calculation. An algebraic grid and elliptic grid generation techniques are adopted for generation of the body-fitted coordinates system, which is suitable to ship's hull forms. Time-marching procedure is used to solve the three-dimensional unsteady problem, where the convection terms are approximated by the QUICK scheme and the 2nd-order central differencing scheme is used for other spatial derivatives. A Sub-Grid Scale turbulence model is used to approximate the turbulence, and the wall function is used at the body surface. Pressure and velocity fields are calculated by the simultaneous iteration method. Numerical calculations were accomplished for the Crude Oil Tanker(DWT 95,000tons, Cb=0.805) model. Calculation results are compared to the experimental results and show good agreements.
