Quasi-steady approaches have been often adopted to model wind forces on moving cylinders in cross-flow and to study instability conditions of rigid cylinders supported by visco-elastic devices. Recently, much attention has been devoted to the experimental study of inclined and/or yawed circular cylinders detecting dynamical phenomena such as galloping-like instability, but, at the present state-of-the-art, no mathematical model is able to recognize or predict satisfactorily this behaviour. The present paper presents a generalization of the quasi-steady approach for the definition of the flow-induced forces on yawed and inclined circular cylinders. The proposed model is able to replicate experimental behaviour and to predict the galloping instability observed during a series of recent wind-tunnel tests.
We review the current understanding of modularity in biological motor control and its forms, and then relate this modularity to proposed modular control structures for biomimetic robots. We note the features that are different between the robotic and the biological 'designs' with features which have evolved by natural selection, and note those aspects of biology which may be counter-intuitive or unique to the biological controls as we currently understand them. Biological modularity can be divided into kinematic modularity comprised of strokes and cycles: primitives approximating a range of optimization criteria, and execution modularity comprised of kinetic motor primitives: muscle synergies recruited by premotor drives which are most often pulsatile, and which have the biomechanical effect of instantiating a visco-elastic force-field in the limb. The relations of these identified biological elements to kinematic and force-level motor primitives employed in robot control formulations are discussed.
Most studies of failure analysis in ductile metals have been based on the classical plasticity theory using the local constitutive relations. These frequently yields a physically unrealistic solution, in which a numerical prediction of the onset of a deformation localization shows an inherent mesh-size sensitivity. A one way to remedy the spurious mesh sensitivity resulted in the unreasonable results is to incorporate the non-local plasticity into the simulation model, which introduce an internal (material) length-scale parameter into the classical constitutive relations. In this paper, a non-local version of the modified Gurson constitutive relation has been introduced into the finite element formulation of the simulation for plane strain compression of the visco elastic-plastic void material. By introducing the non-local constitutive relations we could successfully removed the inherent mesh-size sensitivity for the prediction of the deformation localization. The effects of non-local constitutive relation are discussed in terms of the load-stroke curve and the strain distributions accross the shear band.
This study investigates the feasibility of retrofitting an existing building by connecting the existing building to a new building using connecting dampers. The new building is base-isolated and viscoelastic dampers are assigned as connecting dampers. Scaled models are tested under three different earthquake records using a shaking table. The existing building and the new building are 9 and 8 stories respectively. The existing building model shows more than 3% increase in damping ratio. The maximum dynamic responses and the root mean square responses of the existing building model to earthquakes are substantially reduced by at least 20% and 59% respectively. Further, numerical models are developed by conducting time-history analysis to predict the performance of the proposed seismic mitigation system. The predictions agree well with the test results. Numerical simulations are carried out to optimize the properties of connecting dampers and base isolators. It is demonstrated that more than 50% of the peak responses can be reduced by properly adjusting the properties of connecting dampers and base isolators.
The mechanical properties of biological materials depend on numerous factors. The majority of these relationships are still unknown today, especially with regard to their quantitative characteristics. The reason is that biological materials constitute biomechanical systems of very complex construction, whose behavior cannot be characterized by simple physical constants, as for example can that of engineering materials. The objectives of this investigation were to determine the compression creep and recovery properties of rice stalks at various levels of applied load The compression creep and recovery behavior of the rice stalk could be predicted precisely by rheological model which approached closely to the measured values. But the coefficients of the Burgers recovery model were different from those of the creep model. The Steady state creep behavior occurred at the higher level of force and the logarithmic creep behavior occurred at the lower level of force. The mechanical model being expected the creep behavior in relation with the level of applied load, which was well explained that the rice stalk might be visco-elastic material.

Design of shape fur visco-elastic vibration isolation elements, which are very cost-effective and so popular in many applications is fi?equently based on experiences, intuitions, or trial and errors. Such traditions in shape design make it difficult for drastic changes or new concepts to come out. In this paper, both topological method and shape optimization method are combined together to find out a most desirable isolator shape efficiently by using two commercial engineering programs, ABAQUS and MATLAB. The procedure is divided into two steps. At the first step, a topology optimization method is employed to find an initial shape, where density of either 0 or 1 for finite elements is used fur physical realizability. At the second step, based on the initial shape, finer tuning of the shape is done by boundary movement method. An illustration of the procedure is presented fur a mount of an air-conditioner compressor system and the effectiveness is discussed.
Based upon differential quadrature method (DQM) and nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT), mechanical-hygro-thermal vibrational analyzes of shear deformable porous functionally graded (FG) nanoplate on visco-elastic medium has been performed. The presented formulation incorporates two scale factors for examining vibrational behaviors of nano-dimension plates more accurately. The material properties for FG plate are porosity-dependent and defined employing a modified power-law form. It is supposed that the nano-size plate is exposed to hygro-thermal and variable compressive mechanical loadings. The governing equations achieved by Hamilton's principle are solved implementing DQM. Presented results indicate the prominence of moisture/temperature variation, damping factor, material gradient index, nonlocal coefficient, strain gradient coefficient and porosities on vibrational frequencies of FG nano-size plate.
The nonlocal elasticity as well as Mindlin's first-order shear deformation plate theory are proposed to investigate thermal vibrational of a nanoplate placing on a three-factor foundation. The Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation is connected with the viscous damping to obtain the present three-parameter viscoelastic model. Differential equations of motion are derived and resolved for simply-supported nanoplates to get their natural frequencies. The influences of the nonlocal index, viscous damping index, and temperature changes are investigated. A comparison example is dictated to validate the precision of present results. Effects of other factors such as aspect ratio, mode numbers, and foundation parameters are discussed carefully for the vibration problem. Additional thermal vibration results of nanoplates resting on the viscoelastic foundation are presented for comparisons with future investigations.
Understanding of a creep behavior in rocks under a constant load, due to visco-elastic properties of rock, is an essential element to predict a long term ground deformation. In order to clarify the creep characteristics of the mudstone in Duho formation at Pohang basin, deposited during Tertiary, a series of laboratory tests including physical properties, unconfined compressive strength and uniaxial creep tests, was performed. The mudstone showed a higher creep potential due to 26% of clay minerals such as illite and chlorite. The unconfined compressive strength of the rock was $462{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$ in average, and four creep tests were performed under constant stress of 40 to 70 % of the strength. The creep constants in the empirical and theoretical equations were deduced from the time-strain curves obtained from the tests. Among the several equations, the empirical equation proposed by Griggs and theoretical equation of Burger’s model are appreciated as the best one to express the creep behavior of the mudstone. Instantaneous elastic strain was linearly increased with stress level but strain velocity during the first creep is decreased with a similar pattern by time lapse regardless the stress level.
The asphalt-concrete trackbed system has many advantages in terms of maintenance and economics. However, methods to investigate practical use corresponding to the development of the trackbed system must be developed. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the dynamic performance of the asphalt system in accordance with both the elastic and viscoelastic material characteristics and design thickness of the asphalt trackbed. More specifically, in order to reduce the uncertainty error of the Finite Element(FE) model, a three-dimensional full scale FE model was developed and then the infinite foundation model was considered. Finally, to compare the condition of viscoelastic materials, performance evaluation of the asphalt-concrete trackbed system was used to deal with the dynamic amplification factors; numerical results using isotropic-elastic materials in the FE analysis are presented.
