  • PVM provides users with a single image of high performance parallel computing machine by collecting machines distributed over a network. Low communication overhead is essential to effectively run applications on PVM based platforms. In the original PVM, three times of memory copies are required for a PVM task to send a message to a remote task, which results in performance degradation. We propose a zero-copy model using global shared memory that can be accessed by PVM tasks, PVM daemon, and network interface card(NIC). In the scheme, a task packs data into global shared memory, and notify daemon that the data is ready to be sent, then daemon routes the data to a remote task to which it is sent with no virtual data copy overhead. Experimental result reveals that the message round trip time between two machines is reduced significantly in the proposed zero-copy scheme.

  • As interest in cloud computing grows, the number of users using cloud computing services is increasing. However, cloud computing technology has been steadily challenged by security concerns. Therefore, various security breaches are springing up to enhance the system security for cloud services users. In particular, research on detection of malicious VM (Virtual Machine) is actively underway through the introspecting virtual machines on the cloud platform. However, memory analysis technology is not used as a monitoring tool in the environments where multiple virtual machines are run on a single server platform due to obstructive monitoring overhead. As a remedy to the challenging issue, we proposes a computationally efficient instance memory introspection scheme to minimize the overhead that occurs in memory dump and monitor it through a partial memory monitoring based on the well-defined kernel memory map library.

  • Recently, there has been growing interest in workload consolidation via virtualization for real-time systems. Meanwhile, due to virtualization, additional overhead from intervention of hypervisor increases the execution time of applications running on virtual machine. The increase in execution time decreases the performance of workloads on virtual machines, thus satisfying real-time requirements are not easy. To resolve the problem, we designed and implemented a hypervisor (the K-Hypervisor) that allows programs on virtual machines to access the physical resources, without intervention of the hypervisor. Experimental results show that programs running on K-Hypervisor increase their execution time by about 3% on an average, compared to the native environment. Moreover, it is suitable for real-time workload execution because of its uniform performance degradation, regardless of the resources accessed from tasks, and the frequency it is accessed.

  • In the virtualized server systems, a scheduler in a hypervisor is responsible to assign physical resources for virtual machines. However, the traditional scheduler is hard to provide optimized resource allocation considering the amount of I/O requests. Especially, the drawback hinders performance of software load balancer which runs on virtual machines to distribute I/O requests from the clients. In this paper, we propose a new architecture to improve the performance of software load balancer using multiprocess. Our architecture aims to improve hardware resource utilization and overall performance of the server systems which utilize virtualization technology. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed architecture for the various cases.

  • Electric machines such as motors which have rmving parts are designed for producing mechanical force or torque. The accurate calculations of electromagnetic force and torque are important in the design these machines. Electromagnetic force calculation method using the results of Finite Element Method(FEM) has been presented variously in 2-D problems. Typically the Maxwell's Stress Tensor method and the method of virtual work are used. The former calculates forces by integrating the surface force densities which can be expressed in terms of Maxwell Stress Tensor(MST), and the latter by differentiating the electromagnetic energy with respect to the virtual dis¬placement of rigid bodies of interest. In the problems including current source, magnetic vector potentials(MVP) have rmstly been used as unknown variables for field analysis by a numerical method; e. g. FEM. This paper, thus, introduces the two both methods using MVP in 3-D case. To verify the usefulness of presented methods, a solenoid model is chosen and analyzed by 3-D and axisymmetric FEM. It is found that the force calculation results are in good agreement for several mesh schemes.

  • The rapid development of cloud computing and high requirements of operators requires strong support from the underlying Data Center Networks. Therefore, the effectiveness of using resources in the data center networks becomes a point of concern for operators and material for research. In this paper, we discuss the online virtual-cluster provision problem for multiple tenants with an aim to decide when and where the virtual cluster should be placed in a data center network. Our objective is maximizing the total revenue for the data center networks under the constraints. In order to solve this problem, this paper divides it into two parts: online multi-tenancy scheduling and virtual cluster placement. The first part aims to determine the scheduling orders for the multiple tenants, and the second part aims to determine the locations of virtual machines. We first approach the problem by using the variational inequality model and discuss the existence of the optimal solution. After that, we prove that provisioning virtual clusters for a multi-tenant data center network that maximizes revenue is NP-hard. Due to the complexity of this problem, an efficient heuristic algorithm OMS (Online Multi-tenancy Scheduling) is proposed to solve the online multi-tenancy scheduling problem. We further explore the virtual cluster placement problem based on the OMS and propose a novel algorithm during the virtual machine placement. We evaluate our algorithms through a series of simulations, and the simulations results demonstrate that OMS can significantly increase the efficiency and total revenue for the data centers.

  • With the proliferation of cloud computing and services, the internet traffic and the demand for better quality of service are increasing. For this reason, server virtualization and network virtualization technology, which uses the resources of internal servers in the data center more efficiently, is receiving increased attention. However, the existing hardware Test Access Port (TAP) equipment is unfit for deployment in the virtual datapaths configured for server virtualization. Virtual TAP (vTAP), which is a software version of the hardware TAP, overcomes this problem by duplicating packets in a virtual switch. However, implementation of vTAP in a virtual switch has a performance problem because it shares the computing resources of the host machines with virtual switch and other VMs. We propose a vTAP implementation technique based on the extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF), which is a high-speed packet processing technology, and compare its performance with that of the existing vTAP.

  • Virtual machine tools have been magnified recently as manufacturers could estimate performances of machine tools before design and manufacturing of them. However, it requires much time and efforts to make FEM models and predict precision of machine tools well because machine tools are composed of many joints such as bolt joints, LM joints, rotational bearing joints and mounts. Especially, we have studied computational modeling methods of bolt joints to predict precision of machine tools well in this paper. Stiffness and damping coefficients of bolt joints are investigated and generalized with respect to fasten forces through experiments and FEM analysis. Matrix 27 element of ANSYS is used and bolt joints are simplified as square areas with 8 nodes to apply stiffness and damping simultaneously. Additionally, coordinate transformation of matrix 27 for bolt joints is induced to apply to skewed bolt joints of machine tools and evaluate it using FEM analysis.

  • The FEM analysis of machine tools is the general analysis process to evaluate machine performance in the industry for a long time. Despite advances in FEM software, because of difficult simplicity of CAD drawing, little experience of joints stiffness modeling and troublesome manual contact area divide for bindings, the industry designers think the FEM analysis is still an area of FEM analysis expert. In this paper, the automation of modeling process with simplicity of drawing, modeling of joints and contact area divide is aimed at easy FEM analysis to enlarge utilization of a virtual machine tools. In order to verify the effects of modeling automation, a slant bed type model with tilting table is analyzed. The results show FEM modeling automation method only needed 45 minutes to complete the whole modeling process, while manual modeling method requires almost one month with 8200 calculations for coordinate transformations and stiffness data input.
