  • VR and AR are widely used in many applications to provide more immersive visualization and natural interaction for learning and experiencing virtual but realistic tasks. Energy saving is considered as one of the most important issues throughout the world in order to overcome global warming and energy crisis. In particular, the awareness of home energy saving is regarded as a first step to deal with this issue. In this paper, we suggest a new learning environment using virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) for home energy saving experience. In particular, it presents a comparative study of the user experience in home energy awareness using immersive virtual reality and mobile augmented reality. The first person user experience using immersive VR wearing head mounted display (HMD) and the third person user experience using mobile AR are implemented and systematically compared with each other in terms of the learning effect of energy saving and qualitative usability. Implementation results will be given to show the advantage and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • This paper presents first results of an interdisciplinary research project for the development of an "intelligent" welding helmet. Contrary to conventional welding helmets the system allows a detailed observation both of the welding process and the environment. By methods of virtual and augmented reality additional information can be supplied to the welder. The system can be used for welding preparation, welding process observation and quality assurance.

  • Due to the problem of matching between virtual world space and real-world space, the reality of augmented reality content is rather low. There are many reasons for this result, firstly virtual object is rendered without considering relation between real-world space and virtual world space. Secondly, virtual objects rely too much on the marker to reduce reality. We propose two schemes to improve the reality of augmented reality, one is people occlusion, the other is to reduce the dependence of virtual objects on the marker.

  • Conventional Augmented Reality has used data gloves or markers for smooth interaction between objects and background. This causes inconvenience of use and lower immersion. To build up immersion in Augmented Reality, additional input devices must be removed. For this purpose, accurate recognition of space coordinates is needed even with no attachment of markers. This paper proposes a method to create virtual space coordinates for interaction without wearing additional input devices so as to improve immersion in Augmented Reality. The acquired image was projected to 2D space and vanishing lines were extracted to calculate the virtual space coordinates. Then the sizes of the inserted objects were varied in accordance with the size of the virtual coordinates area based on the image projected onto the 2D coordinates. This resulted in improved immersion. This method can increase the efficiency of object creation by excluding the use of a 3D modeler for creation of 3D objects.

  • This paper suggests a collision techniques for a higher reality in augmented reality by processing collision between a real object obtained through video frame input and a marker-based virtual object or a virtual object from Opengl. Augmented reality system is providing the visual information containing a virtual object added to the real environment and interactive interface between objects and between user and objects becomes a more concerning interest. But the collision problem is essential to the interactive interface and has to be solved first. Therefore, the proposed system suggests a solution for it to increase the realism and the immersion by validating the collision among a marker-based object, a virtual object from Opengl, and a real object obtained through web camera, that is, video frame.

  • The augmented reality is the environment which consists of real-world view and information drawn by computer. Since the image which user can see through augmented reality device is a synthetic image composed by real-view and virtual image, it is important to make the virtual image generated by computer well harmonized with real-view image. In this paper, we present reviews of several works about computer vision and graphics methods which give user realistic augmented reality experience. To generate visually harmonized synthetic image which consists of a real and a virtual image, 3D geometry and environmental information such as lighting or material surface reflectivity should be known by the computer. There are lots of computer vision methods which aim to estimate those. We introduce some of the approaches related to acquiring geometric information, lighting environment and material surface properties using monocular or multi-view images. We expect that this paper gives reader's intuition of the computer vision methods for providing a realistic augmented reality experience.

  • In this paper, we proposed a design of interactive augmented reality coloring book. The proposed method improves user's participation and interest by using real space, augmented reality space, and virtual reality space all together. According to the proposed method, we implemented the PlayingHouse, an interactive augmented reality coloring book. In the future, we expect that AR coloring book could be the category of the library.
