  • Many automobile manufacturers are doing experiment on manufacturing environments by using an augmented reality technology. However, system layout and process simulation by using the virtual reality technology have been performed actively more than by using the augmented reality technology in practical use so far. Existing automobile assembly by using the augmented reality requires the precise calibrating work after setting the robot because the existing augmented reality system for the automobile assembly system configuration does not include the end tip deflection and the robot joints deflection due to the heavy weight of product and gripper. Because the robot is used mostly at the automobile assembly, the deflection problem of the robot joint and the product in the existing augmented reality system need to be improved. Moreover camera lens calibration has to be performed precisely to use augmented reality. In order to improve this problem, this paper introduces a method of the software based calibration to apply the augmented reality effectively to the automobile assembly system. On the other hand, the camera lens calibration module and the direct compensation module of the virtual object displacement for the augmented reality were designed and implemented. Furthermore, the developed automobile assembly system oriented AR-system was verified by the practical test.

  • In this paper, we have proposed an integrated aircraft development environment which can support virtual design and development for Systems Engineering and IPPD(Integrated Product and Process Development). We have also proposed the ViMS(Virtual Mockup System) which can perform a system design review on an integrated aircraft development environment. The ViMS is an integrated virtual design support system with immersive design review functionality to make a virtual mockup instead of a physical mockup through the virtual reality technology. The functionality of the ViMS consists design data management, design technology, design verification, and design assessment. We have described the detailed development artifact, case studies and conclusions of using the ViMS functionality.

  • VR(Virtual reality) technologies have given engineers the ability to design, test, and evaluate engineering systems in a virtual environment. The virtual plant is the highlight of the application of the VR technology to plant engineering. Plant design, maintenance, control, management, operation are integrated in the virtual plant. The VR monitoring system including the concept of the virtual plant is developed to replace a current control room that has number of gages and warning lamps in two-dimensional panels which shows the operating status of a plant. The operating status of the plant is displayed in the VR monitoring system through the realistic computer graphics. Sophisticated, realistic and prompt control becomes possible. The VR monitoring system consists of advanced visualization, walk-through simulation and navigation. In the virtual environment, a user can navigate and interact with each component of a plant. In addition, the user can access the information by just clicking interesting component. The VR monitoring system is operated with various modules, such as (1) virtual plant constructed with Graphic Management System (GMS), (2) Touch & Tell System, and (3) Equipment DB System of Part. In order to confirm the usefulness of the VR monitoring system, a pilot gas plant which is currently being used for plant operator training is taken as application. The end of the paper gives an outlook on the future work and a brief conclusion.

  • With continued technology innovation in the fields of computer graphics (CG) and virtual reality (VR), digital animated avatars (or virtual humans) are evolving into ones that are more interactive at a suitable location such as museum, airport, and shopping mall. Specially, the form of the avatar (or the virtual human) realistically need to be expressed in a way that matches the users' physical space. In recent many researches, the form of virtual human has been expressed as mixed-reality human (MRH)-the virtual human combines with the physicality as the real part. In this paper, we propose to carry out a study comparing various MRH on co-presence and emotional response in two-typed virtual humans depending on how many actual parts are included: (1) (Level 1) small parts in the virtual human combined virtual components (e.g., the head only) and (2) (Level 2) large parts in the virtual human with the physicality as the real part such as head, arms, and upper body). We report on the implemented results of our virtual humans and experimental results on co-presence and emotional response.

  • As for the implementation technology of virtual space, the experience method becomes multifunctional and it recognizes movement, sound, temperature and pressure and is expanding to the studies on the interaction possible intelligent interaction technology field between contents and users. The virtual reality technology is being studied to apply the 3D graphic technology and physical phenomena to virtual space to increase the sense of reality and use hardware devices to the virtual environment to increase immersive experience. The production of interactive contents about the virtual underwater environment needs bidirectional interface technology to connect hardware devices and ocean contents in order to increase the sense of a user to increase the sense of immersion. In this study, it tried to express the virtual underwater environment with the sense of actuality and reality from the analysis of the environmental factors according to changes in depth of water and from the application of the normalized underwater physical laws. Also it was to develop sensory contents having to experience the skin scuba without directly entering the water by connecting a sensory simulator about the skin scuba with the virtual underwater environment.

  • This year, global IT companies such as Google, Apple, and Facebook launched a mobile augmented reality platform. Existing augmented reality technology required a special device such as AR glass or tango phone, but now it will be easy to experience augmented reality in general Android phone and iPhone. The mobile augmented reality game market, which has been attracting interest since the Pokemon game, is expected to become more active. In this article, we introduce augmented reality platforms technology for mobile augmented reality game and mobile augmented reality games including ETRI prototype centered on user interface.

  • Augmented reality (AR) is currently being applied actively to commercial products, and various types of intelligent AR systems combining both the Global Positioning System and computer-vision technologies are being developed and commercialized. This paper suggests an in-vehicle head-up display (HUD) system that is combined with AR technology. The proposed system recognizes driving-safety information and offers it to the driver. Unlike existing HUD systems, the system displays information registered to the driver's view and is developed for the robust recognition of obstacles under bad weather conditions. The system is composed of four modules: a ground obstacle detection module, an object decision module, an object recognition module, and a display module. The recognition ratio of the driving-safety information obtained by the proposed AR-HUD system is about 73%, and the system has a recognition speed of about 15 fps for both vehicles and pedestrians.

  • Representation of various types of information in an interactive virtual reality environment on mobile devices had been an attractive and valuable research in this new era. Our main focus is presenting spatial indoor location sensing information in 3D perception in mind to replace the traditional 2D floor map using handheld PDA. Designation of 3D virtual reality by Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) demonstrates its powerful ability in providing lots of useful positioning information for PDA user in real-time situation. Furthermore, by interpolating portal culling algorithm would reduce the 3D graphics rendering time on low power processing PDA significantly. By fully utilizing the CC2420 chipbased sensor nodes, wireless sensor network was established to locate user position based on Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) signals. Implementation of RSSI-based indoor tracking method is low-cost solution. However, due to signal diffraction, shadowing and multipath fading, high accuracy of sensing information is unable to obtain even though with sophisticated indoor estimation methods. Therefore, low complexity and flexible accuracy refinement algorithm was proposed to obtain high precision indoor sensing information. User indoor position is updated synchronously in virtual reality to real physical world. Moreover, assignment of magnetic compass could provide dynamic orientation information of user current viewpoint in real-time.

  • This presents an English conversation training system with which learners train their conversation skills in English, which makes them converse with native speaker characters in a virtual reality environment with voice. The proposed system allows the learners to talk with multiple native speaker characters in varous scenarios in the virtual reality environment. It recongizes voices spoken by the learners and generates voices by a speech synthesis method. The interaction with characters in the virtual reality environment in voice makes the learners immerged in the conversation situations. The scoring system which evaluates the learner's pronunciation provides the positive feedback for the learners to get engaged in the learning context.
