  • Image which appears in fashion illustration on the late twentieth century is not the representative image as an equivalence to the real fashion styles but the virtual image which bears no relation to any reality. The purpose of this study is review the concept of virtuality and analyze in which way virtual image is expressed in fashion illustrations on the background of Jean Baudrillard's simulacre theory. In post-modem paintings the expression methods of image-virtualization were image mixing through photo-image appropriation, image overlapping, and the icons inserted unreasonably, the focus-out effect through scrubbing and the over-painting on the photograph. Image-virtualization in fashion illustration was expressed through image mixing and expression of image uncertainty. Image mixing was made by photo-image appropriation, image overlapping, connection of heterogeneous images and using interface image, and uncertain image was expressed through the expression of visual ambiguity and virtual movement.

  • In order to evaluate the corrosion of reinforcing steel-bars (rebar) in concrete, a nondestructive evaluation by the half-cell potential method is currently applied. In this study, potentials measured on a concrete surface are compensated into those on the concrete-rebar interface by the inverse boundary element method (IBEM). Because these potentials are obtained three-dimensionally (3-D), 3-D visualization is desirable. To this end, a visualization system has been developed by using VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). As an application, results of a reinforced concrete (RC) slab with corroded rebars are visualized and discussed.

  • In this paper, a 2D X-Y table, two axes of which are symmetrical, and a force sensing device are constructed, which comprise a 2D haptic interfacing apparatus. Two DC motors are used for actuating the two axes of the table and two precision encoders for sensing the position of each axis. Four PZTs are used for sensing the direction and the magnitude of the 2D force applied to the force sensing device by the user. The performance of the 2D haptic interface device is tested by 2D virtual object recognition experiments.

  • This study examines different types of navigation aids when a navigator performs target search tasks in Virtual Environments. The factors manipulated in this study include target information (None/Landmark). navigational difficulty (Easy/Difficult). and map types (None/2D Map/3D Map). Navigation performance was measured by using task completion time and the number of target locations that was remembered by the navigator. In addition, user satisfaction on the navigation aids was also measured by using a 7-point Likert's scale. The results showed that the user satisfaction on the landmark was high when the 3D Map was provided. The task completion time shortened when navigational difficulty was set at "easy." The number of remembered target locations was large when there was no landmark. It was also large with an easy navigation task. or a map (20 or 3D) provided. Guidelines for selecting navigation aids were proposed based on the results.

  • Currently, as Korea enters into a fast aging society, the problem of dementia population is increasing. In this paper, we intend to contribute to the improvement of welfare for the elderly by developing virtual reality technology and related interface technology to effectively perform hand movements known as effective methods for preventing and treating dementia. As the content of the research and development of this paper, it is designed to be easy for the elderly to use and stimulate brain function by applying VR technology using sensors, and to activate mental and physical activities for the elderly who are marginalized in terms of cultural welfare. We intend to develop by classifying the types of games and contents that can induce them. As a result of this thesis, we developed contents using virtual reality to improve cognitive abilities for elderly people with poor cognitive ability to activate the brains of users' cognition, memory, and attention to prevent and treat dementia I want to contribute.

  • This paper proposes a virtual storage system for smart home/office embedded devices by utilizing AoE and HyperSCSI protocols. It relies on current Ethernet infrastructures and aims to provide a low-cost solution for the storage limitation problem on embedded devices. We choose AoE (ATA over Ethernet) and HyperSCSI in our implementation because they are relatively lightweight compared to other network storage protocols such as NFS(Network File System), CIFS(Common Internet File System) and iSCSI(internet Small Computer System Interface). The design and architecture of our proposed virtual system as well as the prototype demonstration are presented in this paper.

  • Recently the VR technique has evolved into a mixed reality (MR) technique, in which a user can observe a real world in front of him/her as well as virtual objects displayed. This has been realized by the employment of a see-through type HMD (S-HMD). We have been developing a mixed reality space employing the MR technique. The objective of our study is to realize a virtual human that acts as a man-machine interface in the real space. It is important in the study to create a virtual human acting naturally in front of a user. In order to give natural motions to the virtual human, we employ a developed motion capture technique. We have already created various 3-D human motion models by the motion capture technique. In this paper, we present a technique for creating a virtual human using a human model provided by a computer graphics software, 3D Studio Max(C). The main difficulty of this issue is that 3D Studio Max(C) claims 28 feature points for describing a human motion, but the used motion capture system assumes less number of feature points. Therefore a technique is proposed in the paper for producing motion data of 28 feature points from the motion data of less number of feature points or from incomplete motion data. Performance of the proposed technique was examined by observing visually the demonstration of some motions of a created virtual human and overall natural motions were realized.
