  • It has been well established that resistant force and wear that occur during rolling motion depend on several factors such as material type, hardness, subsurface microstructure, applied load, and speed. The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of microstructure and the state of deformed layer on the rolling contact characteristics in dry and lubricated rolling contacts. The results of this work show that the rolling resistance behavior depends on the state of the deformed layer. Also, lubrication can reduce the plastic flow at the surface but may still have an effect on the subsurface strain. The cross-sectional view of the microstructure shows that surface traction has a difinite effect on the morphology of the surface region. That is, significant slip seems to have taken place between the ball than those of the dry rolling case. The surface generation effects were significantly less compared to the case of dry rolling contact.

  • In this paper, we investigate the performance improvement by applying flow control to LonWorks-based network systems which support various communication media together with interpretable class of systems. To this end, we introduce a circular queue at each node of industrial network systems usually operated in open loop. Then we utilize the feedback information of the number of data in a queue, the data arriving interval in a queue and channel error to make the overall industrial network system in closed loop. We verify the improved performance of the network systems in view of throughput and fairness measures via the experimental results conducted in several field situation.

  • This study was carried out to compare influential life-style factors between Korean and Japanese women. with a view to providing basic data needed in the community nursing activities for the health promotion of women, The questionnaire survey was conducted between Jan 1 and April 15. 2000 on 64 Korean and 63 Japanese women who committed the care of their child to a day-care center because they had to go to work. The obtained results are as follows. 1. On the whole. there was little difference in the score of life-style factors between Korea and Japan. The areas in which Japanese women got a higher score were personal relationship and nutrition, and Korean women got a higher score in the area of self-realization. 2. Both in Korea and Japan. the degree of satisfaction with family life proved to be the most influential factor on the life-styles for the health promotion of women. This implies that the level of their practicing life styles for the health promotion becomes higher in proportion to the degree of satisfaction with their family life. In conclusion. considering the fact that the proportion of women workers has been on the increase in Korea. heath promotion services for women need to be treated more importantly, with the focus on the interpersonal relationship not only in family but also in work sites.

  • One of the objectives of any task design is to provide a safe and helpful workplace for the employees. The safety and health module may include means for confronting the design with safety and health regulations and standards as well as tools for obstacles and collisions detection (such as error models and simulators). Virtual Reality is a leading edge technology which has only very recently become available on platforms and at prices accessible to the majority of simulation engineers. The design of an automated manufacturing system is a complicated, multidisciplinary task that requires involvement of several specialists. In this paper, a design procedure that facilitates the safety and ergonomic considerations of an automated manufacturing system are described. The procedure consists of the following major steps: Data collection and analysis of the data, creation of a three-dimensional simulation model of the work environment, simulation for safety analysis and risk assessment, development of safety solutions, selection of the preferred solutions, implementation of the selected solutions, reporting, and training When improving the safety of an existing system the three-dimensional simulation model helps the designer to perceive the work from operators point of view objectively and safely without the exposure to hazards of the actual system.

  • In the rural communities in less-favored areas (mainly hilly and mountainous areas) in Japan, the number of settlements which cannot maintain the community functions by themselves has been increasing because of the progress of depopulation and aging, so the necessity for achieving mutual supplementation of the community function by the settlement reorganization has been increasing. This paper consists of the following three points. 1) General view of settlement reorganization policy in Japan. 2) Case study of the T district in Japan. 3) Possibility of the settlement reorganization by the policy measures which obligate community members to work together. Main results are as follows. 1) There are several settlement reorganization policy measures, but many are still the model project stage, and not yet spread, so it is necessary to wait and see how these measures will develop. 2) The number of the residents of small-scale aging settlements who do not hope for the reorganization, nor feel the necessity of reorganization shall not be few. This will make great difficulty in the settlement reorganization process. 3) A local area activity promotion conference which derives from a former administrative unit like a former village has many functions to the settlement reorganization. 4) In the rural communities in less-favored areas, the policy measures which obligate community members to work together have widely spread. These are expected to play the supplemental role for the settlement reorganization. It is necessary to discuss among residents the activation plan and the future vision of the community, as well as to discuss the settlement reorganization.

  • The paper presents a Bayesian Finite element (FE) model updating methodology by utilizing modal data. The dynamic condensation technique is adopted in this work to reduce the full system model to a smaller model version such that the degrees of freedom (DOFs) in the reduced model correspond to the observed DOFs, which facilitates the model updating procedure without any mode-matching. The present work considers both the MPV and the covariance matrix of the modal parameters as the modal data. Besides, the modal data identified from multiple setups is considered for the model updating procedure, keeping in view of the realistic scenario of inability of limited number of sensors to measure the response of all the interested DOFs of a large structure. A relationship is established between the modal data and structural parameters based on the eigensystem equation through the introduction of additional uncertain parameters in the form of modal frequencies and partial mode shapes. A novel sampling strategy known as the Metropolis-within-Gibbs (MWG) sampler is proposed to sample from the posterior Probability Density Function (PDF). The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by considering both simulated and experimental examples.
