  • In this paper, a video broadcasting system between a home-server-type device and a mobile device is proposed. The home-server-type device can automatically extract semantic information from video contents, such as news, a soccer match, and a baseball game. The indexing results are utilized to convert the original video contents to a digested or arranged format. From the mobile device, a user can make recording requests to the home-server-type devices and can then watch and navigate recorded video contents in a digested form. The novelty of this study is the actual implementation of the proposed system by combining the actual IT environment that is available with indexing algorithms. The implementation of the system is demonstrated along with experimental results of the automatic video indexing algorithms. The overall performance of the developed system is compared with existing state-of-the-art personal video recording products.

  • Lately the usage of multimedia equipment with small LCD displays is rapidly increasing. Although many people use devices like this, videos intended for TV or HDTV are sent to these mobile devices. Therefore cases where it is hard for the user to view the desired scenes are growing more frequent. Currently, most services simply reduce the size of the content to fit the screen when they offer it for mobile devices. However, especially with sports broadcasts, there are many areas that cannot be seen very well because it was simply reduced in size. We therefore consider this weakness and are researching how to let the user choose an area of interest and then sending it to the user in a way that fits the device. In this paper, we address the problem of video delivery and personalization. For the delivered video content, we suggest the UP-SAM User Personalized Context-Aware Service Adaptation Middleware) model that uses the video content description and MPEG-21 multimedia framework.

  • Explosive deployment of smart mobile devices such as smart phones, and tablets along with expansion of wireless internet bandwidth have enabled the deployment of mobile video streaming such that video traffic becomes the most important service in wireless networks. Recently, for more efficient video streaming services, the ISO MPEG group standardized a protocol called DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) and the standard has been quickly adopted by many service providers such as YouTube and Netflix. Despite of the convenience of mobile streaming services, users also suffer from low QoE(Quality of Experience) due to dynamic channel fluctuations and unnecessary downloading due to high churning rates. This paper proposes a noble efficient video rate selection algorithm considering user buffer level, channel condition and churning rate. Computer simulation based performance study showed that the proposed algorithm improved the QoE significantly compared to a method that determines the video rate based on current channel conditions. Especially, the proposed method reduced the rebuffering rate, one of the most important performance factors of the QoE, to a nonnegligible level.

  • As many mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets are widely spread, optimized mobile video encoder used during video recording application is needed. In this paper, we implemented H.264/AVC base profile video encoder on a mobile device and empirically optimized control parameters of the encoder. As the experiment, we more than 100 test cases were designed with varying Lagrangian optimization, Hadamard Transform, search range, I-frame period, and reference frames. During the experiment, we measured picture quality, bit-rate, encoding time, motion estimation time, and power consumption. From the result, we can determine optimal values for the H.264 control parameters.

  • The use of mobile devices is increasing in multimedia applications. The multimedia contents are delivered to mobile users over heterogeneous networks. Due to fluctuation in bandwidth and user mobility, the service providers are facing difficulties in providing Quality of Service (QoS) guaranteed delivery for multimedia applications. Multimedia applications depend on QoS parameters such as delay, bandwidth, and jitter to offer better user experience. The existing schemes use the single source and multisource delivery but are unable to balance between stream quality and network congestion for mobile users. We proposed a Quality Oriented Multimedia Content Delivery Scheme (QOMCDS) for the mobile cloud to deliver better quality multimedia contents for the mobile user. The multimedia contents are delivered to the mobile device based on the device's parameters and network environment. The objective video quality assessment models like Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity (SSIM), and Video Quality Measurement (VQM) are used to measure the quality of the video. The client side Quality of Experience metric such as Startup delay, Rebuffering events, and Bitrate switch count was used for evaluation. The proposed scheme is evaluated using dash.js and is compared to existing schemes. The results show significant improvement over existing multimedia content delivery schemes.

  • Nowadays mobile devices are used for various applications such as making voice/video calls, browsing the Internet, listening to music etc. The average battery consumption of each of these activities and the length of time a user spends on each one determines the battery lifetime of a mobile device. Previous methods have provided predictions of battery lifetime using a static battery consumption rate that does not consider user characteristics. This paper proposes an approach to predict a mobile device's available battery lifetime based on usage patterns. Because every user has a different pattern of voice calls, data communication, and video call usage, we can use such usage patterns for personalized prediction of battery lifetime. Firstly, we define one or more states that affect battery consumption. Then, we record time-series log data related to battery consumption and the use time of each state. We calculate the average battery consumption rate for each state and determine the usage pattern based on the time-series data. Finally, we predict the available battery time based on the average battery consumption rate for each state and the usage pattern. We also present the experimental trials used to validate our approach in the real world.

  • Korean telecommunications industry has a large scale market and boasts on high service quality and high technologies enough to provide the mobile video telephony service(the VTS) satisfactorily. For many years, Korean telecommunications companies have been investing enormous amount of money to advertise their VTS widely and to allow their customers to change their cell phones for the 3G(the third generation) devices indispensable for the VTS. However, despite their efforts, the VTS adoption rate in Korea is very low as of January, 2010 and it seems that customers seldom feel the necessity to use. From this viewpoint, it becomes necessary to identify antecedents influencing the intention to use for the VTS empirically. For this purpose, we have proposed several hypotheses from the perspective of the Value-based Adoption Model(VAM). We conducted a survey and found the several factors which influence the value perception of VTS.

  • In this paper, we present a method to customize the ground color in outdoor sports video to provide TV viewers with a better viewing experience or subjective satisfaction. This issue, related to content personalization, is becoming critical with the advent of mobile TV and interactive TV. In outdoor sports video, such as soccer video, it is sometimes observed that the ground color is not satisfactory to viewers. In this work, the proposed algorithm is focused on customizing the ground color to deliver a better viewing experience for viewers. The algorithm comprises three modules: ground detection, shot classification, and ground color customization. We customize the ground color by considering the difference between ground colors from both input video and the target ground patch. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme offers useful tools to provide a more comfortable viewing experience and that it is amenable to real-time performance, even in a software-based implementation.

  • Recently, due to the prevalence of various mobile devices and broadband wireless networks, a significant interests and demands for multimedia streaming services over the Internet have been increasing. However, it is difficult to transmit continuous multimedia stream when mobile terminals are moving. Therefore, in order to deploy mobile IPTV service in the broadband wireless network, efficient wireless resource utilization and seamless QoE (Quality of Experience) offers to the users are an important issue. In this paper, we propose a network based adaptive streaming scheme, called MARC (Mobile Adaptive Rate Control), which controls the quality of the video and rate of the video based on the status of the wireless channel. The proposed scheme uses awareness information of the wireless channel status and controls transmitting streaming video which is suitable for the wireless channel status and mobile station location, in order to provide a seamless video playback for mobile environment in addition to improving the quality of a streaming service. The proposed MARC scheme alleviates the discontinuity of video playback and allocates suitable client buffer in broadband wireless network. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.
