A Study on Low-Band-Shift with Integer Lifting for Effective Motion Estimation (효과적인 움직임 예측을 위한 정수형 리프팅 기반의 저대역 이동법에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose motion estimation and compensation using Low-Band-Shift(LBS) with Integer Lifting Shift property. To overcome shift-variant property on wavelet coefficients, the LBS was previously proposed. This method which is applied to reference frame in video coding technique has superior performance in terms of rate-distortion characteristic. However, this method needs more memory and computational complexity. For the enhancement of those disadvantages, we propose motion estimation using Low-Band-Shift with Integer Lifting. The Integer Lifting implementation gives us good efficiency of calculation and storage.

270 MHz Full HD H.264/AVC High Profile Encoder with Shared Multibank Memory-Based Fast Motion Estimation

  • We present a full HD (1080p) H.264/AVC High Profile hardware encoder based on fast motion estimation (ME). Most processing cycles are occupied with ME and use external memory access to fetch samples, which degrades the performance of the encoder. A novel approach to fast ME which uses shared multibank memory can solve these problems. The proposed pixel subsampling ME algorithm is suitable for fast motion vector searches for high-quality resolution images. The proposed algorithm achieves an 87.5% reduction of computational complexity compared with the full search algorithm in the JM reference software, while sustaining the video quality without any conspicuous PSNR loss. The usage amount of shared multibank memory between the coarse ME and fine ME blocks is 93.6%, which saves external memory access cycles and speeds up ME. It is feasible to perform the algorithm at a 270 MHz clock speed for 30 frame/s real-time full HD encoding. Its total gate count is 872k, and internal SRAM size is 41.8 kB.

  • It is very important to share tactical information such as video, images, and text messages among soldiers for situational awareness. Under the wireless environment of the battlefield, the available bandwidth varies dynamically and is insufficient to transmit high quality images, so it is necessary to minimize the distortion of the area of interests such as targets. A natural operating method for soldiers is also required considering the difficulty in handling while moving. In this paper, we propose a natural ROI(region of interest) setting and image compression method for effective image sharing among soldiers. We verify the proposed method through prototype system design and implementation of eye gaze detection and ROI-based image compression.

A Study of the Mimesis in Media Costume Design (미디어의상 디자인에 표현된 미메시스 연구)

  • Since Homeros in Greece, Mimesis was thought to be an art to imitate the nature, and it means an imitation of the nature classically. Mimetic theories were set to be a kind of art work in the era of Renaissance, and the terminology of mimesis was widely used to replace it with an originality in the 15th century. The purpose of this study is to understand the aesthetics of mimesis expressed in media costume design. For this purpose, I investigated the theories of the mimesis, categorized the definition, then applied those categories for media costume design. Documentary studies were conducted through aesthetics, fashion books and demonstrative studies were processed by analyzing photos from collection fashion magazines and media DVD, video, fashion site of internet. In the history of aesthetics, the mimesis could be defined into three categories; the external representation mimesis, the internal symbol mimesis and the multiful meta mimesis. In media costume, the representation mimesis included design historical point of view, a period that of 1900s and ancient representation mimesis. The internal mimesis included symbol of religion, character, riches, psychology and fear mimesis. The multiful meta mimesis included hybrid and distortion mimesis. Analysis on the mimesis expressed in media costume design fashion may provide an excellent method for understanding human aesthetic in costume.

Performance Comparison of Block-based Distortion Estimations for FRUC Techniques (FRUC 기술을 위한 블록별 왜곡 크기 추정기법의 성능비교)

  • Since DVC (Distributed Video Coding) and FRUC (Frame Rate Up Conversion) techniques need to have an efficient motion compensated frame interpolation algorithms. Conventional works of these applications have mainly focused on the performance improvement of overall system. But, in some applications, it is necessary to evaluate how well the MCI (Motion Compensated Interpolation) frame matches the original frame. For this aim, this paper deals with the modeling methods for evaluating the block-based matching cost. First, several matching criteria, which have already been dealt with the motion compensated frame interpolation, are introduced and then combined to make estimate models for the size of MSE (Mean Square Error) noise of the MCI frame to original one. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the block-based cost evaluation models are tested and can be effectively used for estimating the MSE noise.

A Survey of the Harmonics Level on a Typical Household Loads by Field Measurements (현장 측정에 의한 일반 가정집 부하의 고조파 수준 조사)

  • Typical household loads have nonlinear loads including a personal computer, video, refrigerator, microwave oven, TV, and audio set. These nonlinear loads generate harmonic currents and create distortions on the sinusoidal voltage of the power system. Harmonic field measurements have shown that the harmonic contents of a waveform varies with time. A cumulative probablistic approach is the most commonly used method to solve time varying harmonics. This paper provides in depth analysis on harmonics field measurement of the typical household loads for one year period and the survey is conducted with the objectives to identify the trends of harmonic distortion level present and indentify the future trends of metering in the presence of nonsinusoidal current and voltage waveforms in the system.

An Efficient Feature Point Extraction Method for 360˚ Realistic Media Utilizing High Resolution Characteristics

  • In this paper, we propose a efficient feature point extraction method that can solve the problem of performance degradation by introducing a preprocessing process when extracting feature points by utilizing the characteristics of 360-degree realistic media. 360-degree realistic media is composed of images produced by two or more cameras and this image combining process is accomplished by extracting feature points at the edges of each image and combining them into one image if they cover the same area. In this production process, however, the stitching process where images are combined into one piece can lead to the distortion of non-seamlessness. Since the realistic media of 4K-class image has higher resolution than that of a general image, the feature point extraction and matching process takes much more time than general media cases.

  • In this paper, the wavelet video coding using Low-Band-Shift(LBS) method and multiresolution motion estimation(MRME) is proposed. To overcome shift- variant property on wavelet coefficients, the LBS was proposed. LBS method previously has superior performance in terms of rate-distortion characteristic. However, this method needs more memory and computational complexity. Therefore to reduce computational complexity of video coding using LBS, we combine MRME with LBS. When mm is applied only, it has 7 times as much as existing method's motion vector because each subband has different motion vector using property of LBS, number of motion vector decreases. Proposed method decreases motion vector, and it decreases motion compensated Prediction error by detailed motion estimation. And then it shows better coding performance. Also this method reduces computational amount by smaller search area in higher resolution. The computational complexity of the proposed method is 12.1% of that of existing method at 3-level wavelet transform. The experimental results with the proposed method show about 0.2∼9.7% improvement of MAD performance in case of lossless coding, and 0.1∼2.0㏈ improvement of PSNR performance at 4he same bit rate in case of lossy coding.

Human Visual Perception-Based Quantization For Efficiency HEVC Encoder (HEVC 부호화기 고효율 압축을 위한 인지시각 특징기반 양자화 방법)

  • In this paper, the fast encoding algorithm in High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) encoder was studied. For the encoding efficiency, the current HEVC reference software is divided the input image into Coding Tree Unit (CTU). then, it should be re-divided into CU up to maximum depth in form of quad-tree for RDO (Rate-Distortion Optimization) in encoding precess. But, it is one of the reason why complexity is high in the encoding precess. In this paper, to reduce the high complexity in the encoding process, it proposed the method by determining the maximum depth of the CU using a hierarchical clustering at the pre-processing. The hierarchical clustering results represented an average combination of motion vectors (MV) on neighboring blocks. Experimental results showed that the proposed method could achieve an average of 16% time saving with minimal BD-rate loss at 1080p video resolution. When combined the previous fast algorithm, the proposed method could achieve an average 45.13% time saving with 1.84% BD-rate loss.

An effective transform hardware design for real-time HEVC encoder (HEVC 부호기의 실시간처리를 위한 효율적인 변환기 하드웨어 설계)

  • In this paper, we propose an effective design of transform hardware for real-time HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) encoder. HEVC encoder determines the transform mode($4{\times}4$, $8{\times}8$, $16{\times}16$, $32{\times}32$) by comparing RDCost. RDCost require a significant amount of computation and time because it is determined by bit-rate and distortion which is computated via transform, quantization, dequantization, and inverse transform. This paper therefore proposes a new method for transform mode determination using sum of transform coefficient. Also, proposed hardware architecture is implemented with multiplexer, recursive adder/subtracter, and shifter only to derive reduction of the computation. Proposed method for transform mode determination results in an increase of 0.096 in BD-PSNR, 0.057 in BD-Bitrate, and decrease of 9.3% in encoding time by comparing HM 10.0. The hardware which is proposed is implemented by 256K logic gates in TSMC 130nm process. Its maximum operation frequency is 200MHz. At 140MHz, the proposed hardware can support 4K Ultra HD video encoding at 60fps in real time.
