In a large diameter piping system, high frequency energy can produce excessive noise, high vibration, and failures of thermo-well, instrumentation, and attached small-bore piping. High frequency energy is generated by flow induced vibration like vortex shedding in orifices and valves. Once this energy is generated, amplification may occur from acoustical and/or structural resonances, resulting in high amplitude vibration and noise. At low frequencies, pipe vibration occurs laterally along the pipe's length, but at higher frequencies, the pipe shell wall vibrates radially across its cross-section. The simple beam analogy which is based on the beam mode vibration can not be applied to evaluate shell mode vibration. ASME OM3 recommends that the stress be measured directly by strain gauge and be evaluated according to the fatigue curves of the piping material. This Paper discusses the excitation and amplification mechanism relevant to high frequency energy generation in piping system, the monitoring method of the shell mode vibration in ASME OM3, the evaluation method generally used in the industry. Finally this paper presents the stress evaluation of the cavitating venturi down stream piping, where high frequency shell mode vibrations were observed during the operation.
Driver's feeling is variously affected by lots of components such as engine, frame, wheels, and seats during the operation of automobiles. The main objective of this research is to identify the correlation between subjective evaluation and vibration metrics that was set by ISO to investigate development of the car vibration quality index using multiple linear regressions (MLR). A previous research related with automotive vibration quality used the method of calculating acceleration values of the point of a seat, a seat back, foot as RMS for objective evaluation. The automotive comfort is determined by RMS values. In comparison with the previous research, this study includes not only the vibration metrics, but also subjective values by jury evaluation. By indentifying the correlation between subjective evaluation and vibration metrics, the automotive vibration quality index is developed through MLR. Based on the results of this study, the proposed the automotive vibration quality index which developed through MLR will be helpful to obtain objective and reliable automotive comfort values.
An extensive numerical investigation on the magnetorheological (MR) damper-based smart passive control system for mitigating vibration of stay cables under wind loads has been conducted. The smart passive system is incorporated with an electromagnetic induction (EMI) device for reducing complexity of the conventional MR damper based semi-active control system by eliminating an external power supply part and a feedback control part (i.e., sensors and controller). In this study, the control performance of the smart passive system has been evaluated by using a cable structure model extracted from a full-scale long stay cable with high tension. Numerical simulation results of the proposed smart damping system are compared with those of the passive and semi-active control systems employing MR dampers. It is demonstrated from the results that the control performance of the smart passive control system is better than those of the passive control cases and comparable to those of the semi-active control systems in the forced vibration analysis as well as the free vibration analysis, even though there is no external power source in the smart passive system.
This paper presents a novel diagnostic technique for monitoring the system conditions and detecting failure modes and precursors based on wavelet-packet analysis of external noise/vibration measurements. The capability is based on extracting relevant features of noise/vibration data that best discriminate systems with different noise/vibration signatures by analyzing external measurements of noise/vibration in the time-frequency domain. By virtue of their localized nature both in time and frequency, the identified features help to reveal faults at the level of components in a mechanical system in addition to the existence of certain faults. A prima-facie case is made via application of the proposed approach to fault detection in scroll and rotary compressors, although the methods and algorithms are very general in nature. The proposed technique has successfully identified the existence of specific faults in the scroll and rotary compressors. In addition, its capability of tracking the severity of specific faults in the rotary compressors indicates that the technique has a potential to be used as a prognostic tool.
In this study, finite element modeling and structural vibration analyses of a gyrocopter have been conducted considering dynamic hub-loads due to rotating blades. For this research, 3D CATIA models for most mechanical parts are exactly prepared and assembled into the final aircraft configuration. Then the dynamic finite element model including several non-structural parts are constructed based on the exact 3D CAD data. Computational structural dynamics technique based on finite element method is applied using both MSC/NASTRAN and developed in-house code which can largely reduce the pre and postprocessing time of general transient dynamic analyses. Modal based transient and frequency response analyses are used to efficiently investigate vibration characteristics. The results include natural frequency comparison for different fuel and pilot conditions, fundamental natural mode shapes, frequency responses and transient acceleration responses of the present gyrocopter model.
This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling, active vibration controller design and experiments for a cylindrical shell equipped with MFC actuators. The dynamic model was derived by using Rayleigh-Ritz method based on Donnel-Mushtari shell theory. The actuator and sensors for the MFC actuator equations were derived based on pin-force model. The equations of motion were then reduced to modal equations of motion by considering the modes of interest. The sensor equations were also converted to a reduced form. An aluminum shell was fabricated to demonstrate the effectiveness of modeling and control techniques. The boundary conditions at both ends of the shell were assumed to be shear diaphragm. Theoretical natural frequencies were calculated and compared to experimental result. It was observed that the theoretical result is in good agreement with experimental result for the first two modes. The multi-input and multi-output positive position feedback controller, which can cope with first two modes, was then designed based on the blockinverse theory and implemented using DSP. It was found from experiment that vibrations can be successfully suppressed.
Many induction motor broken bar diagnosis methods are based on evaluating special components in machine signals spectrums. Current, power, flux, etc are among these signals. Frequencies related to a broken rotor fault are slip dependent, therefore, correct diagnosis of fault - especially when obtrusive frequency components are present - depends on accurate determination of motor velocity and slip. The traditional methods typically require several sensors that should be pre-installed in some cases. This paper presents a diagnosis method based on only a vibration sensor. Motor velocity oscillation due to a broken rotor causes frequency components at twice slip frequency difference around speed frequency in vibration spectrum. Speed frequency and its harmonics as well as twice supply frequency, can easily and accurately be found in a vibration spectrum, therefore th motor slip can be computed. Now components related to rotor fault can be found. It is shown that a trained neural network - as a substitute for an expert person - can easily categorize the existence and the severity of a fault according to the features extracted from the presented method. This method requires no information about th motor internal and has been able to diagnose correctly in all the laboratory tests.
Vibration is an undesirable phenomenon in a dynamic system like lightly damped aerospace structures and active vibration control has gradually been employed to suppress vibration. The objective of the current investigation is to introduce an active torsional magneto-rheological (MR) fluid based damper for vibration control of a typical nose landing gear. They offer the adaptability of active control devices without requiring the associated large power sources. A torsional damper is designed and developed based on Bingham plastic shear flow model. The numerical analysis is carried out to estimate the damping coefficient and damping force. The designed damper is fabricated and an experimental setup is also established to characterize the damper and these results are compared with the analytical results. A typical FE model of Nose landing gear is developed to study the effectiveness of the damper. Open loop response analysis has been carried out and response levels are monitored at the piston tip of a nose landing gear for various loading conditions without damper and with MR-damper as semi-active device. The closed-loop full state feedback control scheme by the pole-placement technique is also applied to control the landing gear instability of an aircraft.
This paper summarizes the experimental vibration-based structural health monitoring study on a historical monument in Jordan. In this work, and within the framework of the European Commission funded project "wide-Range Non-Intrusive Devices Toward Conservation of Historical Monuments in the Mediterranean Area", a seven and a half century old minaret located in Ajloun (73 km north of the capital Amman) is studied. Because of their cultural value, touristic importance and the desire to preserve them for the future, only non-destructive tests were allowed for the experimental investigation of such heritage structures. Therefore, after dimensional measurements and determination of the current state of damage in the selected monument, ambient vibration tests are conducted to measure the accelerations at strategic locations of the system. Output-only modal identification technique is applied to extract the modal parameters such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. A Non-linear version of SAP 2000 computer program is used to develop a three-dimensional finite element model of the minaret. The developed numerical model is then updated according to the modal parameters obtained experimentally by the ambient-vibration test-results and the measured characteristics of old stone and deteriorated mortar. Moreover, a parametric identification method using the N4Sid state space model is employed to model the dynamic behavior of the minaret and to build up a robust, immune and noise tolerant model.

This paper develops and evaluates several strategies for structural vibration control with the objective of attenuating broadband noise inside a rectangular enclosure. The strategies evaluated include model-independent collocated control, model-based feedback control and a new 'modal-estimate' feedback strategy. Collocated control requires no knowledge of model parameters and enjoys the advantage of robustness. However, effective broadband noise attenuation with colocated control requires a large number of sensor-actuator pairs. Model-based con-trollers, on the other hand, can be theoretically effective even with the use of a single actuator. However, they suffer from a lack of robustness and are unsuitable from a practical point of view for broadband structural vibration applications where the dynamic models are of large order and poorly known. A new control strategy is developed based on attenuating a few structural vibration modes that have the best coupling with the enclosure acoustics. Broadband attenuation of these important modes can be achieved using a single actuator, a limited number of accelerometers and limited knowledge of a few modal functions. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed strategy.
