  • Clinical outcomes of dogs treated for end-stage otitis extema with total ear canal ablation (TECA) combining lateral bullar osteotomy (LBO) at Veterinary medical teaching hospital of Seoul National University from 2001 to 2003 were evaluated. In 14 dogs, 23 ears, the operation was successful in alleviating all clinical signs of otitis externa and media. The main complication after TECA combining LBO were facial nerve paralysis and the others were recurrent infection and the formation of fistula and cyst. Two cases were tumors. One was ceruminous gland adenoma and the other was squamous cell carcinoma. The operation successfully resolved the original problems in 100% (23 of 23) of the surgically treated ears of these dogs.

  • Stump pyometra is defined as a reinfection or inflammation of uterine remnant after ovariohysterectomy. We surveyed four bitches which were serviced in the veterinary medical teaching hospital of Seoul National University. In this Paper we studied the method for diagnosis of stump pyometra by symptoms, blood tests, and ultrasound films. To detect the stump pyometra is difficult because clinical signs are verb similar to the normal pyometra. Especially symptoms could noticed be noticed even by their owner until dogs have a vaginal discharge. Blood test also were in normal range in each item except in the elevation of the number of while blood cells. We conclude ultrasonic observation add experimental laparotomy has a significant meaning to diagnosis the stump pyometra.

  • A 7 year-old male Maltese dog was referred to Seoul National University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with a recurrent mass in the right scapular region. The patient had no pains associated with the mass. On aspiration cytology, the neoplastic mass is composed of clusters of mature adipocytes with large lipid vacuoles, intermixed with frequent microcapillary vessels which is characteristic of lipoma. At surgery, the mass was infiltrated into the surrounding muscles and therefore the complete resection of the mass was difficult. Histologically, the mass was diagnosed as infiltrative lipoma. The patient has no recurrent signs 8 months after surgery.

  • A 3-year-old, 4.0 kg, intact male shih-tzu dog with anorexia, depression, pale mucous membranes, tachypnea, tachycardia was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Autoagglutination was observed by naked eye when blood was collected in an EDTA-tube and many spherocytes were found on a Diff-Quik stained blood smear. PCV was 6% and indirect bilirubin was increased markedly. So the immune-mediated hemolytic anemia was diagnosed. Autoagglutination was too severe to perform cross-matching test. Blood was not transfused as it might accelerate or precipitate hemolytic crisis, and regeneration of erythrocytes was very good. Thus corticosteroid of immunosuppressive dose and fluid were administered and PCV was monitored. Although blood was not transfused, PCV increased from 6 to 15.9% in a day and to 30% 7 days later. Therapy for liver was concurrently conducted because liver enzyme activities were high. Corticosteroid tappering therapy was conducted for 75 days and PCV was recovered to 46% after 4 months form start of the treatment.

  • Transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) is a contagious, sexually transmitted tumor and, in the natural setting, affects only dogs. We surveyed two cases which were serviced in veterinary medical teaching hospital of Seoul National University. Through this report we studied the method for treatment or n by chemotherapy and surgical resection. in treatment or TVT, surgical resection is not considered an effective method, but chemotherapy and radiation. In these two cases, chemotherapy was very effective and in the second case, there was no effect of surgical method. For treatment of TVT, chemotherapy was very effective, but surgical resection was not recommended.

  • A 9-year-old male Yorkshire terrior with recurrent chronic otitis externa and otitis interna was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. Radiographic findings indicated mineralization around the right ear canal. A tan nodular mats, 1 cm in diameter. was noted near the tympanum after total ear canal ablation. Cytologically. the imprint smear of the cut surface of the mass produced clusters of cells with abundant and weakly basophilic cytoplasm, one small round nucleus and one or two nucleoli, mixed with both degenerate and non degenerate neutrophils. The location of the nuclei was eccentric, and some cells contained somewhat coarse black granules in their cytoplasms, on which the mass was diagnoted as ceruminous gland adenoma or hyperplasia associated with inflammation. Histopathologic examination of the tumor was compatible with a diagnosit of ceruminous gland adenoma. The patient is responding well to sugery and antimicrobial treatment.

  • Male pseudohermaphrodites is one of abnormalities of phenotypic sex and have an XY chromosome constitution and testes, but the internal or external genitalia are to some degree those of a female. We surveyed one case which were referred in Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. When patient was purchased, its phenotype was entirely female that have female external genitalia. However, from the age of 6 months, clitoris was gradually increased to Os clitoris, and patients showed male behavior. Critical clinical sign was trauma of protruded Os clitoris. In radiographic and ultrasonographic examination, he had normal vagina and urinary bladder. In chromosome examination, he had an XY chromosome constitution. This case was performed removal of Os clitoris and ovariohysterectomy.

  • A 9-year-old male Maltese with foamy nasal discharge, respiratory distress, and sneezing followed by epistaxis was presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. Radiography showed no significant findings from an open mouth view. Rhinoscopy also did not find any remarkable lesions in the nasal cavity. But when vigorously swabbing the nasal cavity, numerous cells having round nuclei, coarse reticular chromatin, one large nucleolus and distinct cytoplasmic vacuoles, which is typical for canine transmissible venereal tumor cells were collected. We thoroughly searched for any primary transmissible venereal tumor at the other areas of the body other than the nasal cavity, but found none. The patient responded well to vincristine, and the clinical signs resolved with no respiratory distress, sneezing or epistaxis.

  • Three dimensional computed tomographic images were obtained in two cases with trauma. The first case of a 3 year-old male Maltese, with ataxia and head tilting due to head trauma was referred to veterinary medical teaching hospital, Seoul National University. Remarkable findings were not found on survey radiographs. With the help of three-dimensional reconstruction computed tomographic imaging, parietal and occipital bone fracture was identified. The second case of 4 month-old female Yorkshire terrier with left forelimb lameness was referred right after trauma. Survey radiography showed obvious incongruity of the elbow joint. Lateral and medial condyle of the left humerus fracture and lateral displacement of the left ulna were apparent in three-dimensional computed tomographic image. It was considered that three-dimensional computed tomography could be used as an aid modality for the exact evaluation of extends and degree of fracture as well as planning of orthopedic surgery.

  • Compulsive behavior is a sequence of movements usually derived from normal maintenance behaviors that are performed out of context in a repetitive, exaggerated, ritualistic, and sustained manner. In general, the treatment plan includes environmental management, behavior modifications, and psychotropic medications, however, the prognosis is varied. In this case report, a 9-year-old neutered male miniature poodle presented with a lifelong history of tail chasing and mutilation. Based on the behavioral history, observations, and physical examination, compulsive disorder was diagnosed. The dog's compulsive tail chasing behavior improved only with a combination of psychotropic medications, including fluoxetine, trazodone, and gabapentin.
