  • In order to know the prevalence of S. hyicus subsp hyicus in pigs, attempts were made to isolate the organism from 549 healthy adult pigs, 277 healthy suckling piglets and 17 piglets with exudative epidermitis from April 1988 to January 1989 in Chinju, Korea. Also determined was antibiotic susceptibility of the isolates. Isolation rates of S. hyicus subsp. hyicus from adult pigs and suekling piglets were 27.0% and 53.1%, respectively. The organism was isolated predominantly from abdomen (10.9%) of adult pigs and external ear (31.6%) of suckling piglets. Isolation rates of the organism from piglets of different age group were in order of prevalence of 1(82.1%), 3(74.0%), 2(54.7%), 4(52.9%), 5(15.2%) and 6(5.7%) post-natal weeks. All of 489 isolates were sensitive to gentamicin, kanamycin and cephalexin but 23.7~79.6% of the strains were resistant to erythromycin, penicillin G and tetracycline. The 49.2% of these resistant strains exhibited multiple drug resistance. The drug resistant patterns most frequently encountered were PG TC EM(10.7%) in triple pattern, PG TC(23.0%) in double pattern and TC(44.4%) in single pattern.

  • Benzimidazole is an widely used anthelmintics in livestock clinics. The aim of present study was to investigate benzimidazole residues in the meat in Sejong City. A total of 338 samples of meat(beef 287, pork 37, chicken 14) were selected from the laboratory meat(Korean beef genetic test, hygiene test) supplied to school in Sejong City. Representative benzimidazole class drug such as thiabendazole, 2-amino albendazole sulfone, fenbendazole, oxfendazole, and oxfendazole sulfone were monitored in samples by using lc-ms/ms and the analysis was preformed based on the Korea Food Code guideline. Limit of quantitation (LOQ) was ranged from 0.56 to 3.02 ppb for target drugs and the accuracy was within the acceptance criteria. Among the sample analyzed only one case, the pork meat was found to have drug levels that exceed LOQ. However, the overall residue concentration was 2.17 ppb, which was lower than the maximum residue levels (100 ppb).

  • For the screening of residual antibiotics in foods, bioassays and microbiological inhibitor tests are commonly applied. These methods are tested by the various susceptibility of bacteria against different kinds of antibiotics. However, the sensitivity of bioassay is generally insufficient to detect some residual antibiotics at level of interest. This study was performed to investigate the detection limit of variable antibiotics of the bioassay and to improve the sensitivity to some antibiotics. The sensitivity of bioassay using Bacillus megaterium ATCC 9885, B. subtilis ATCC 6633, B. cereus ATCC 11778 and Geobacillus stearothermophilus ATCC 10149 was low in the detection of macrolides, quinolones, chloramphenicol, and monensin. On the contrary, Micrococcus luteus ATCC 9341 showed high sensitivity to macrolides and Escherichia coli ATCC 11303 was highly sensitive to quinolones and aminoglycosides. Consequently, both strains would be useful to improve sensitivity of bioassay with a wide detection range.

  • In veterinary medicine amitraz has been used as an insecticide to eliminates mites, lice, and ticks in dogs, cats, goats, swine and cattle. The objective of present study was to developed an analytical method using one-step extraction and determination of the amitraz in veterinary drugs by liquid chromatography (LC). The amitraz was analyzed by LC equipped with Waters XTerra RP18 ($4.8{\times}250mm;\;5{\mu}m;\;Waters,\;USA$) analytical column, using 75% acetonitrile (acetonitrile/D.W; 75/25) at 1.0 ml/ min. The UV-VIS detection of amitraz was made at 290 nm. Calibration graphs were linear with very good correlation coefficients ($r^2>0.9999$) from $80{\sim}120{\mu}g/ml$. The limit of detection was $0.09{\mu}g/ml $ and limit of quantification was $0.27{\mu}g/ml $. The method showed good intra-day precision (CV 0.05~0.09%) and inter-day precision (CV 0.06~0.18%).

  • Cardiovascular diseases prevail among modern societies and underdeveloped countries, and a high mortality rate has also been reported by the World Health Organization affecting millions of people worldwide. Hyperactive platelets are the major culprits in thrombotic disorders. A group of drugs is available to deal with such platelet-related disorders; however, sometimes, side effects and complications caused by these drugs outweigh their benefits. Ginseng and its nutraceuticals have been reported to reduce the impact of thrombotic conditions and improve cardiovascular health by antiplatelet mechanisms. This review provides (1) a comprehensive insight into the available pharmacological options from ginseng and ginsenosides (saponin and nonsaponin fractions) for platelet-originated cardiovascular disorders; (2) a discussion on the impact of specific functional groups on the modulation of platelet functions and how structural modifications among ginsenosides affect platelet activation, which may further provide a basis for drug design, optimization, and the development of ginsenoside scaffolds as pharmacological antiplatelet agents; (3) an insight into the synergistic effects of ginsenosides on platelet functions; and (4) a perspective on future research and the development of ginseng and ginsenosides as super nutraceuticals.

  • Analytical method for determination of florfenicol was developed for estimate veterinary drug residue of unestablished MRLs in meat. The method was validated in correspondence with the CODEX guideline for florfenicol residue in meat. The samples mixed with sodium sulfate were extracted with ethyl acetate. After clean-up, the residue was dissolved in mobile phase and analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detector. The calibration curve showed good linearity($r^2=0.9997$) within the concentration range of $0.05{\sim}1.0\;mg/kg$. The limit of detection(LOD) and limit of quantification(LOQ) were validated at 0.012 and 0.039 mg/kg, respectively. The recoveries in fortified meat ranged from 85.6 to 95.6%($1.1{\sim}5.3%$ RSD) at the 0.05 to 0.4 spiking levels. We monitored 150 samples of meats that were purchased in Korea(Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon and Gwangju). Among tested samples, florfenicol was detected in 1 of pig at the level of 0.040 mg/kg, and below LOQ in 1 of cattle, 2 of pig and 2 of chicken. The residues of florfenicol in the tested samples were within the MRLs.

  • A 10-year-old, spayed female, Doberman Pinscher dog presented with right forelimb lameness. On physical examination, painful reaction and crepitation were present at the right shoulder. Radiographic evaluation of the shoulder revealed nothing remarkable. On the ultrasonography of the right shoulder joint, 2 small echogenic masses accompanied by reverberation artifacts were observed in the right biceps tendon near its origin at the supraglenoid tuberosity. Based on these findings, we suspected biceps calcifying tendinopathy. Clinical signs resolved intermittently after administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. This study described the ultrasonographic findings of calcifying biceps brachii tendinopathy which is an unusual finding in dogs.

  • Pimobendan is a recently developed cardiac drug which is useful to control moderate to severe congestive heart failure (CHF) from chronic mitral valvular diseases (CMVI). Because of controversy related to the efficacy and safety of pimobendan in dogs, the optimal efficacy and safety of pimobendan was assessed in 20 dogs with CMVI in this study. Scores for quality of life, respiratory failure, circulatory failure and heart failure were evaluated along with radiographical and echocardiographical assessments for about 2 months period after the addition of pimobendan into the regular cardiac medications. This study proved clear evidence that pimobendan had beneficial therapeutic effects in dogs with advanced CMVI, without particular adverse effects. However, further studies are warranted to address the drug interaction with other cardiac therapeutics and to assess therapeutic effects in CHF from other type of heart diseases in dogs and other animals.
