A Survey on the Prevalence of Cumulative Trauma Disorders and Related Factors among Seafares (선원들의 누적외상성질환 발생과 관련요인)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for the prevention and management of Cumulative Trauma Disorders in Korea seamen. 569 seamen's questionnaire had been acquired at Korea Marine Training and Research Institute. The prevalence in Cumulative Trauma Disorders within recent 12 months was 68.5%. The more working hours(p<0.01), services on the vessel(p<0.01), and the less job satisfaction(p<0.05), the higher prevalence of Cumulative Trauma Disorders. The distribution of Cumulative Trauma Disorders by the part of the body was turned out as Back ; 43.6%, knee ; 23.9%, shoulder ; 19.3%. The officers had more frequency of symptom around the neck than the ratings(p<0.01) and the seamen who work at the engine room were more frequent in elbow than those at deck department(p<0.05). In the duration of pain, 55.4% were less than one week, 20.6% less than 30 days, and 24.0% 30 days and more. the cause of symptom was turned out as 34.5% by excessive hard work and 30.1 % was unknown.

  • The degradation of durability and increase of fatigue on the ship are mainly caused by vibration of the engine and rotating machineries. The damper to minimize the influence from vibration is usually attached between the machineries and its base. General damper applied on the vessel is passive damper which is designed to attenuate specified frequency signals, i.e, high frequency vibration signals. But it is hard to anticipate its performance for low frequency signals. In this research, active vibration isolator using VCM is developed to suppress wide band vibration signals. Routh-Huritz's stable condition, ultimate sensitivity method and parameter tuning are applied to derive PID parameters and 2 and 4 phase choppers are also adapted to drive VCM. Simulation and experiments are executed to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control schemes.

  • The purpose of this study is provide a basic data for the prevention and management of musculoskeletal symptoms in Korea seamen. 569 seamen's questionnaire had been acquired at Korea Marine Training and Research Institute from February 24 to March 31 in 1997, The results of this study were as follows; Prevalence in musculoskeletal symptom within recent 12 months was 68.5% . It was 3% in seamen who had graduated from colleges or universities and 56.0% in seamen who had graduated from elementary school(p<0.01). The more working hours(p<0.01), servies on the vessel(p<0.01), and the less job satisfaction(p<0.05), the higher prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms were. The distribution of musculoskeletal symptoms by the part of the body was turned out as Back ; 43.6%, knee : 23.9%, shoulder : 19.3%. This study shows that musculoskeletal disorders are seamen's important health problem and they can not properly take medical service due to the out of home for a long period as characteristics of occupation.

Remodeling of tuna purse seiner for improving fishing performance (조업성능 향상을 위한 선망선 개선)

  • In an attempt to respond to the increase in international oil prices and reduce operating expenses, ship remodeling was carried out on a 740ton class tuna purse seiner. To strengthen the competitiveness of the fisheries industry by improving vessel performance, a bulbous bow was newly equipped. The slipway and rudder area were also lengthened and enlarged with the propeller and main engine remained unchanged. To reduce the hull resistance, a circle type bulbous bow was attached on the hull behind bow thruster and thus the cost for exchanging electrical equipment for bow thruster was reduced. The new rudder area was expanded 15% more than the old one within the extent that the existing mechanical control part and rudder stock were not changed. To prevent fishing net damage and stabilize wake field, slipway was lengthened to the optimal position. All of the new design of remodeling parts went through the model tests in towing tank and CWC. Besides resistance test, all of necessary model test results were delivered for hydrodynamic character for the modified ship. The maneuvering simulation to verify that the remodeled ship satisfies the IMO rules was performed in both zigzag and turning tests. The estimated resistance with new bulbous bow and lengthened stern was reduced by 4.8% in the 2-dimensional analysis and 17.4% in the 3-dimensional analysis in comparison of conventional ship. The average reduction of resistance was estimated about 10%. Maneuvering character of modified hull form was found to satisfy all regulations under IMO. The remodeling of tuna purse seiner can not only improve fishing performance but also contribute to reduction of operating cost by saving energy for the fisheries industry.

Economic evaluation for the re-arrangement of accommodation house in ultra large container ship (초대형 컨테이너선의 거주구역 재배치에 대한 경제성 평가)

  • Recently the building of ultra large container ship are discussed among ship building companies and ship operating company who have a tendency to pursue the advantage of large scale of economy. These tendency will be continued for the time being, if ship-building skill and economical efficiency are available. As the enlargement of container ship size becomes hot issues in ship-building markets, the needs for re-arrangement of accommodation house in large container ship are proposed carefully in some researches. This study examined economical efficiency of re-arrangement of accommodation house in ultra large container ship. The separation between accommodation and engine room is proposed through out drawing works in initial design stage and we examined the merits and demerits of the separation in the view of economical efficiency. The RFR(Required Freight Rate) is considered as the objective function to evaluate the re-designed vessel. The economical benefits are analyzed in the view of ship operator and shipyard respectively.

  • As ship builder companies have a tendency to pursuit the effect of scale economy, recently the ultra-large sized container ship is discussed very actively among them. It is expected that these situation will be continued for the time being. The need of accommodation re-arrangement is carefully proposed according to the tendency of ultra-large sized ship. In this paper, accommodation re-arrangement of ultra-large container ship is examined in the view of economy. We proposed separation of engine room and accommodation part through review and supplementaition of drawing generation in intial design stage. Also we investigated its merits and demerits to find out whether it can be realized or not in the view of economical efficiency. The RFR(Required Freight Rate) is considered as the objective function to evaluate the re-designed vessel. The economical benefits for increasing the number of TEU(Twenty-foot Equivalent Units)'s and the re-arranged space are analyzed in the view of ship owner and shipyards respectively.

  • Stiffened panels are basic strength members which have been used widely in a vessel or an offshore. They have been used often a deck, a side and a bottom structure of ship and have a number of one sided stiffener in either one or both directions called grillage. Their buckling and plastic collapse become damaged reason of the hull girder so it needs to investigate accurately buckling and ultimate strength of stiffened panels. In the present paper, using the ANSYS, a commercial finite element analysis code, we conducted the evaluation regarding buckling and post-buckling behaviour of stiffened panels, and analyzed stiffener's web height change, considering the effect of lateral pressure load against compression ultimate strength.

  • Compressive sensing allows recovering an original signal which has a small dimension of the signal compared to the dimension of the entire signal in a short period of time through a small number of observations. In this paper, we proposed a method for detecting tonal signal which caused by the machinery component of a vessel such as an engine, gearbox, and support elements. The tonal signal can be modeled as the sparse signal in the frequency domain when it compares to whole spectrum range. Thus, the target tonal signal can be estimated by S-OMP (Simultaneous-Orthogonal Matching Pursuit) which is one of the sparse signal recovery algorithms. In simulation section, we showed that S-OMP algorithm estimated more precise frequencies than the conventional FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) thresholding algorithm in low SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) region.

Development of a metal-halide lamp's electronic ballast (메탈핼라이드 집어등용 전자식 안정기 개발)

  • Jigging and angling fishery is prevalent in the East Sea of Korea and this fishery needs many lamps to attract the fish. And the fishing boat uses 24~47 ballasts by the vessel's tonnage to turn on the fishing lamp. A 3.5kW magnetic-type ballast being currently used at many fishing boats can drive two 1.5kW metal-halide lamps. Meanwhile, this ballast has large weight (25kg) and volume. Therefore it is one of reason for the over-consumption of energy and the fire, resulted from overheat and electrical short, occurs occasionally because the ballast is installed at narrow and hot engine room. In addition, most of magnetic ballast has several problems such as periodic condenser replacement, low energy efficiency and making lamp short life, etc. So it is necessary to improve or develop newly the electronic ballast, which has to be smaller, lighter and more efficient. An electronic ballast was designed for the fishing boat by considering duration and electromagnetic interference in the study. Its weight and volume are respectably 40% and 66% compared to current ballast on the basis of PCB. The metal-halide lamp's spectrum of the designed ballast was nearly same to that of the current ballast in the test of lighting. In particular, the light stability was improved and there isn't any radio interference. As mentioned above, it is expected that the developed electronic ballast can replace current magnetic ballast because of many advantages related to energy-saving.

Basic Design of High-Speed Riverine Craft Made of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer

  • The Small-Unit Riverine Craft (SURC) is a small high-speed vessel used by navies and marine corps in relatively shallow waterway environments, such as riverine areas or littoral coasts. In the past, SURCs have primarily been rigid-hulled inflatable boats constructed using composite materials such as glass fiber reinforced plastics. More recently, single-hull SURCs have been manufactured using aluminum for weight reduction. In this study, a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) material was applied instead to examine its feasibility in the basic design of an SURC with a hull length of 10 m. The CFRP structural design was obtained using the properties of a marine CFRP laminate, determined in a previous study. Next, the designed CFRP SURC was modeled to confirm its functionality, then compared with existing aluminum SURCs, indicating that the CFRP SURC was 41.49 % lighter, reduced fuel consumption by 30 %, and could sail 50 NM further for every hour of engine operation. A method for reducing the high cost of carbon fiber was also proposed based on the adjustment of the carbon fiber content to provide the optimum strength where required. The data developed in this study can be used as a basis for further design of CFRP craft.
