The authors have reported significant reductions in particulate emissions of diesel engines by generating strong turbulence during the combustion process. This study aims to identify optimum conditions of turbulent mixing for effective soot reduction during combustion. The experiments were conducted with a constant volume combustion vessel equipped with abet-generating cell, in which a small amount of fuel is injected during the combustion of the main spray. The jet of burned gas from the cell impinges the main flame, causing changes In the mixing of fuel and air. Observation was made for a variety combinations of distances between spray nozzle and Jet orifice at different directions of impingement. It Is shown that compared with the case without Jet flame soot decreases when the jet impinges. When the jet is very close to the flame, it penetrates the soot cloud and causes little mixing. There were no apparent differences in the combustion duration when the direction of impingement was varied, although the mechanisms of soot reduction seemed different. An analysis of local turbulent flews with PIV (Particle image Velocimetry) showed the relationship between the scale of the turbulence and the size of the soot cloud.

Polymer composites, especially glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) are finding ever-increasing applications in areas such as superconductivity, space technology, cryogenic rocket engines, and cryogenic storage vessels. Various components made of polymer composites are much lighter than their metallic counterparts but have equivalent strength for ultra-low temperature applications. In this paper, we have investigated the tensile properties of an indigenously prepared unidirectional cylindrical hollow composite tube for its use as a neck of the cryogenic vessel. XRD and SEM of the tube are completed before cryogenic conditioning to ascertain the fiber and resin distribution in the matrix. The result shows that for composites, after 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes of cryogenic conditioning at 77K in a liquid nitrogen bath, the strength and modulus increase significantly with the increase of strain rate and reach the optimum value for 45 minutes of conditioning. The results are encouraging as they will be helpful in assessing the suitability of GFRP in the structural design of epoxy-based components for cryogenic applications.

Objectives : Accumulation point is a useful acupoint for acute pain diseases. Among the eight extra meridians, only four (Yin Heel, Yang Heel, Yin Link, Yang Link vessel) have accumulation point and the others (Governor, Conception, Thoroughfare, Belt Vessel) do not. However, there is no explanation why these four meridians do not have it. So, the authors researched the literature to look for the reasons. Methods : We investigated 10 books and 1 paper about the 'accumulation point of extra meridians' using several search engines and researched reason why the other 4 meridian do not have it. Results : All of the 16 accumulation points are located on the 4 limbs. The four limbs have more Yang energy than the trunk. The governor, conception, thoroughfare, and belt vessels do not flow in the limbs. It seems that there is no acupoint located on deep gap enough to be the accumulation point among the four vessels. When it comes to the functions of these vessels, they are little related with the acute pain that is the main target of the accumulation point. Conclusions : From the results of this study, it seems to be reasonable that the four vessels do not have accumulation point.

Currently, 90 % of the world's population breathes air with a fine dust content exceeding the World Health Organization's annual average exposure limit (10 ㎍/㎥). Global efforts have been devoted toward reducing secondary pollutants and ultra-fine dust through regulations on nitrogen oxides released over land and sea. Domestic efforts have also aimed at creating clean marine environments by reducing sulfur emissions, which are the primary cause of dust accumulation in ships, through developing and distributing environment-friendly ships. Among the technologies for reducing harmful emissions from diesel engines, electrostatic precipitator offer several advantages such as a low pressure loss, high dust collection efficiency, and NOx removal and maintenance. This study aims to increase the durability of a ship by improving equipment quality through failure mode effects analysis for the preventive maintenance of an electrostatic precipitator that was developed for reducing fine dust particles emitted from the 2,427 kW marine diesel engines in ships with a gross tonnage of 999 tons. With regard to risk priority, failure mode 241 (poor dust capture efficiency) was the highest, with an RPN of 180. It was necessary to determine the high-risk failure mode in the collecting electrode and manage it intensively. This was caused by clearance defects, owing to vibrations and consequent pin loosening. Given that pin loosening is mainly caused by vibrations generated in the hull or equipment, it is necessary to manage the position of pin loosening.

As environmental regulations have been strengthened and high fuel efficiency has been in demand in recent years, the number of ships using natural gas as a fuel is increasing. The demand for ships using LPG or methanol, which are emerging as eco-friendly vessel fuels, is also increasing. In this perspective, ME-LGI engines using LPG or methanol as a fuel have attracted considerable attention. Ships equipped with an ME-LGI engine are required to check the reliability of the fuel injection valve during shipping. This means that the development of a fuel injection valve tester is essential for the commercialization of ME-LGI engine. This study conducted the conceptual design of a fuel injection valve tester for ME-LGI engines using a system engineering process in the order of requirements analysis, functional analysis, and design synthesis. In the requirement analysis stage, the operating process of fuel injection valve was analyzed, and the necessity of checking the sealing oil leakage was then derived. In the functional analysis stage, the functions and flow of them were defined at each functional level. In the design synthesis stage, the equipment for each function was set and the process block diagram based on it was derived. In addition, preliminary risk analysis was performed as a part of system analysis and control, and safety measures were added to the conceptual design. This study is expected to be a good reference material for the concept design of other systems in the future because it shows the application process of a system engineering process to the conceptual design in detail.

This study was focused on the estimations of air pollutants, such as PM(Particulate matters), SOx(Sulfur Oxides), $CO_2$(Carbon diOxides) and NOx(Nitrogen Oxides), from a diesel propulsion engine installed on a naval vessel. Legislative and regulatory actions for exhaust emissions from ships are being strengthened in international communities and national governments to protect human health and the environment. In this context, various technologies have been developed from all of the nations of the world to meet strict standards. These regulations are based on commercial ship applications and according to size, but are not suitable for military naval vessels, which have much different engine operating conditions and hull architectures. Additionally, there is no international emission control system for military ships. Emission factors have been updated for commercial ship types from work at various research institutes; however, it is difficult to develop emission factors for military vessels because of their characteristics. In this paper, exhaust emissions from diesel engines installed on naval vessels under steady navigation condition were estimated with emission inventory methodology applied to ocean going vessels using fuel-based methods and fuel sulfur content analysis.

The use of gas as fuel, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG), has increased in recent years owing to its lower sulfur and particulate emissions compared to fuel oil or marine diesel oil. LNG is a low temperature, volatile fuel with very low flash point. The major challenges of using LNG are related to fuel bunkering, storing, and handling during ship operation. The main components of an LNG fuel system are the bunkering equipment, fuel tanks, vaporizers/heaters, pressure build-up units (PBUs), and gas controlling units. Low-pressure dual-fuel (DF) engines are predominant in small LNG-powered vessels and have been operating in many small- and medium-sized ferries or LNG-fueled generators.(Tamura, K., 2010; Esoy, V., 2011[1][2]) Small ships sailing at coast or offshore rarely have continuous operation at constant engine load in contrast to large ships sailing in the ocean. This is because ship operators need to change the engine load frequently due to various obstacles and narrow channels. Therefore, controlling the overall system performance of a gas supply system during transient operations and decision of bunkering time under a very poor infrastructure condition is crucial. In this study, we analyzed the fuel consumption, the system stability, and the dynamic characteristics in supplying fuel gas for operating conditions with frequent engine load changes using a commercial analysis program. For the model ship, we selected the 'Econuri', Asia's first LNG-powered vessel, which is now in operation at Incheon Port of South Korea.

As the seriousness of global environment pollution is gaining increasing public attention, research into greenhouse gas emissions of ships is being carried out globally. At a domestic level, however, in a number of significant fields such research has not been conducted to date. This study examined countermeasures for the reduction of $CO_2$ emission in the fields of electronic control engines, trim optimization, propeller polishing, hull cleaning, and anti-fouling paint using an actual sea-going vessel. Selected countermeasures were applied during sea trials of the ship and the effect of specific fuel oil consumption analyzed. It was found that each countermeasure resulted in a decrease of fuel consumption of 1~5%. The energy efficiency operational indicator (EEOI) was calculated and found to also be improved by 1~5%. Further research into the EEOI of domestic shipping is planned to enhance conformance with international environmental regulations and improve global competitiveness.
The ignition delay of a dual fuel system has been numerically investigated by adopting a constant volume chamber as a model problem simulating diesel engine relevant conditions. A detailed chemical kinetic mechanism, consisting of 28 species and 135 elementary reactions, of dimethyl ether (DME) with methane ($CH_{4}$) sub-mechanism has been used in conjunction with the multi-dimensional reactive flow KIVA-3V code to simulate the autoignition process. The start of ignition was defined as the moment when the maximum temperature in the combustion vessel reached to 1900 K with which a best agreement with existing experiment was achieved. Ignition delays of liquid DME injected into air at various high pressures and temperatures compared well with the existing experimental results in a combustion bomb. When a small quantity of liquid DME was injected into premixtures of $CH_{4}$/air, the ignition delay times of the dual fuel system are longer than that observed with DME only, especially at higher initial temperatures. The variation in the ignition delay between DME only and dual fuel case tend to be constant for lower initial temperatures. It was also found that the predicted values of the ignition delay in dual fuel operation are dependent on the concentration of the gaseous $CH_{4}$ in the chamber charge and less dependent on the injected mass of DME. Temperature and equivalence ratio contours of the combustion process showed that the ignition commonly starts in the boundary at which near stoichiometric mixtures could exists. Parametric studies are also conducted to show the effect of additive such as hydrogen peroxide in the ignition delay. Apart from accurate predictions of ignition delay, the coupling between multi-dimensional flow and multi-step chemistry is essential to reveal detailed features of the ignition process.
Due to the larger and high-speed vessels recently constructed, output and speed of the engines for propulsion or power generation is increasing. These high-power and high-speed engine of the ship is becoming as a major contributor causing excessive noise and vibration. Other fittings as well as equipment installed on board, it makes equipment failure or other defect by resonance. This causes a lot of M/H(Man Hour) for repairs and the reliability of the company is invading even be negative because the clients give much comment. Thus, it's being studied for any fittings installed on board to maintain the safe operation and to prevent any problem during the performance in any operating conditions. In this study, it was investigated to solve these problems for the supports of the various fittings for easy installation-related support that each type of intensity and shape and manufacturing method using structural analysis program(DNV Nauticus Hull 3D Beam). Namely, it would be applied to the very large crude carriers in consideration of mechanics of materials of the support equipment by providing the fact that dynamics analysis of the structural characteristics of the equipment and the support of the production installation is easy and productivity can be high standards for geometry and thereby to simplify the analysis task to design changes at the same time and to minimize the reinforcement for the supports.
