  • This paper presents the efficiency of a floating vertical axis wind turbine with variable-pitch. A model was designed to use the lift force and drag force for blades with various pitch angles. The blade's pitch angle is controlled by the stopper. To validate the efficiency of the wind turbine discussed in this paper, a model test was carried out through a single model efficiency experiment and wave tank experiment. The parameters of the single model efficiency experiment were the wind speed, electronic load, and pitch angle. The wave tank experiment was performed using the most efficient pitch angle from the results of the single model efficiency experiment. According to the results of the wave tank experiment, the surge and pitch motion of a structure slightly affect the efficiency of a wind turbine, but the heave motion has a large effect because the heights of the wind turbine and wind generator are almost the same.

  • This study demonstrates the advantages of a shear-free structure designed to modify vertical profiles of wind speed in the atmospheric surface layer. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) software, FLUENT is used to interpret the velocity field modification around the structure and wind turbine. The shapes of shear-free structure, installed at upstream toward prevailing wind direction, would be fences, buildings and trees, etc. According to the simulation results, it is obvious that wind shear between heights of wind turbine's blades is decreased together with a speed-up advantage. This would lead decrease of periodic wind loading caused by wind shear and power-out increase by flow uniformity and wind speed-up.

  • Noise performance of small wind turbines is critical since these are generally installed near the community. In this study, flow noise characteristics of Savonius wind turbines are numerically investigated. Flow field around the turbine are computed by solving unsteady RANS equation using CFD techniques and the radiated noise are predicted by applying acoustic analogy to the computed flow data. Parametric study is then carried out to investigate the effects of operating conditions and geometric design factors of the Savonius wind turbine. Tonal noise components with higher harmonic frequency than the BPF are identified in the predicted noise spectra from a Savonius wind turbine. The end-plates and helical blades are shown to reduce overall noise levels. These results can be used to design low-noise Savonius wind turbines.

  • In the present study, unsteady flow analysis has been conducted to investigate the blade forces and wake flow around a hybrid street-lamp having a vertical-axis small wind turbine and a photovoltaic panel. Uniform velocities of 3, 5 and 7 m/s are applied as inlet boundary condition. Relatively large vortex shedding is formed at the wake region of the photovoltaic panel, which affects the increase of blade torque and wake flow downstream of the wind turbine. It is found that blade force has a good relation to the variation of the angle of attack with the rotation of turbine blades. Variations in the torque on the turbine blade over time create a cyclic fluctuation, which can be a source of turbine vibration and noise. Unsteady fluctuation of blade forces is also analyzed to understand the nature of the vibration of a small wind turbine over time. The detailed flow field inside the turbine blades is analyzed and discussed.

  • This study deals with the structural optimization of hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine blades using a response surface method (RSM). The structural analysis results suggest that the stress of hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine blades exceeds the yield strength. Optimization techniques are then applied to structural design to ensure a safe structure. First, the design factors that strongly influence the structural response are identified. The RSM was applied based on the design of experiments. The objective function and constraint terms set the weight and allowable stress, respectively. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis was conducted to indicate the effects of the design factors on the stress and weight. Finally, structural design was performed for the hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine blade.

  • In the present study, structure analysis has been performed to understand the deflection and stress distribution for a hybrid street-lamp having a vertical-axis wind turbine and a photovoltaic panel. Modal analysis is also evaluated to avoid resonance gerenerated by sychronism between a turbine and a lamppost. To analyze deflection, stress and frequency, general analysis code(ANSYS-Mechanical 13) is employed in the present work. Throughout structure analysis in the hybrid street-lamp, maximum stress is observed at the connecting position between a turbine blade and a blade supporter. Campbell diagram which is combined the natural frequency of turbine blades and blade passing frequency is presented to analyze a system resonance. It is found that the resonance of the system having a rotating turbine blade and a lamppost can avoid by the optimal selection of geometric parameters of a wind turbine.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the structural stability of a low speed 200 W class gyromill type vertical axis wind turbine system. For the analysis, a commercial code is adopted. The pressure distribution on the rotor blade surface is examined in detail. In order to perform unidirectional FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) analysis, the pressure resulted from CFD analysis has been mapped on the surface of wind turbine as load condition. The rotational speed and gravitational force of wind turbine are also considered. The results of FSI analysis show that the wind turbine reveals an enough structural margin. The maximum structural displacement occurs at trailing edge of blade and the maximum stress occurs at the strut.

  • In this study, aerodynamic characteristics of the blades of a helical-type vertical axis wind turbine(VAWT) have been investigated. For this purpose, a 100-W helical-type vertical axis wind turbine was designed using a design formulae, and a 3D computational fluid dynamics analysis was performed considering wind tunnel test conditions. Through the results of the analysis, the aerodynamic power output and flow characteristics of a helical blade were confirmed. In order to validate the aerodynamic power output obtained through the analysis, a wind tunnel test was performed by using a full-scale helical-type vertical axis wind turbine. The 3D analysis technique was validated by comparing its results with those obtained from the wind tunnel test.
