In a tornadic wind field, the vertical velocity component in certain regions of tornadoes can be significant, forming one of the major differences between tornadic wind fields and synoptic straight-line wind fields. To better understand the wind characteristics of tornadoes and properly estimate the action of tornadoes on civil structures, it is important to ensure that all the attributes of tornadoes are captured. Although Doppler radars have been used to measure tornadic wind fields, they can only directly provide information on quasi-horizontal velocity. Therefore, lots of numerical simulations and experimental tests in previous research ignored the vertical velocity at the boundary. However, the influence of vertical velocity in tornadic wind fields is not evaluated. To address this research gap, this study is to use an approach to derive the vertical velocity component based on the horizontal velocities extracted from the radar-measured data by mass continuity. This approach will be illustrated by using the radar-measured data of Spencer Tornado as an example. The vertical velocity component is included in the initial inflow condition in the CFD simulation to assess the influence of including vertical velocity in the initial inflow condition on the entire tornadic wind field.
While the feasibility of vertical velocity as a threshold parameter for pre-impact fall detection has been verified, effects of sensor attachment locations and methods calculating vertical acceleration and velocity on the detection performance have not been studied yet. Regarding the vertical velocity-based pre-impact fall detection, this paper investigates detection accuracies of eight different cases depending on sensor locations (waist vs. sternum), vertical accelerations (accurate acceleration based on both accelerometer and gyroscope vs. approximated acceleration based on only accelerometer), and vertical velocities (velocity with attenuation vs. velocity difference). Test results show that the selection of waist-attached sensor, accurate acceleration, and velocity with attenuation based on accelerometer and gyroscope signals is the best in overall in terms of sensitivity and specificity of the detection as well as lead time.

The study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of vertical velocity distribution measured by current meter at Kangkyung station in Keum river during the period of 1995 to 1997. It suggests the quadratic parabola equation to estimate the vertical velocity profile only from the measurement data of surface velocity. The equation was found to be statistically very stable and showed high significance to express the surface velocity and bottom velocity. The vertical velocity profile was determined by the relationships to the surface velocity, and a coefficient of the quadratic parabola equation. The vertical velocity profile can be applied to calculating the mean velocity and discharge, and to and to analyse the dispersion of pollutant materials in the streamflow.

Vertical velocity is critical in many areas, such as the control of unmanned aerial vehicles, fall detection, and virtual reality. Conventionally, the integration of GPS (Global Positioning System) with an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) was popular for the estimation of vertical components. However, GPS cannot work well indoors and, more importantly, has low accuracy in the vertical direction. In order to overcome these issues, IMU-barometer integration has been suggested instead of IMU-GPS integration. This paper proposes a new complementary filter for the estimation of vertical velocity based on IMU-barometer integration. The proposed complementary filter is designed to minimize drift error in the estimated velocity by adding PID control in addition to a zero velocity update technique.
The vertical velocity profile was detennined by the relationships to the surface velocity, and a coefficient of the quadratic parabolic equation. The equation was verified to the reserved survey data, and the results were confirmed to be good for the estimation of the characteristics of the vertical velocity distribution. The vertical velocity profile can be applied to calculating the mean velocity and discharge, and to analyse the dispersion of pollutant materials in the streamflow.
The characteristics of the longitudinal velocity in a $180^{\circ}$ constant-radius, recirculating laboratory channel were investigated. Three-dimensional velocity fields were measured using a side-looking ADV. The shortcomings of existing equations for longitudinal velocity are discussed. An eddy viscosity model is adopted in the downstream momentum equation. A mathematical equation was developed to describe the vertical distribution of longitudinal velocity. The comparisons of the longitudinal velocity show generally good agreement. It is found that the curvature change in the curved channel affects the vertical location of maximum velocity and the vertical profile of longitudinal velocity.
An experimental investigation of the flow around a vertical fence was carried out using a PIV velocity field measurement technique. The vertical fence was embedded in a turbulent boundary layer. The instantaneous velocity fields measured at cross-sectional planes reveal complex longitudinal vortices that vary in size and strength, developing from the upstream location. In the instantaneous vorticity and velocity field data, the shear flow separated from the fence top is highly turbulent and shows unsteady flow characteristics. The topography of the ensemble averaged velocity fields, especially the separation bubble formed behind the fence, shows that the spatial distributions of streamwise velocity (U) and vertical (V) are symmetric, the spanwise velocity (W) is skew-symmetric with respect to the central xy-plane(z=0).

This study shows that the vertical migration speed of sound scattering layers (SSLs), which is distributed in near Funka Bay, were measured by 3D velocity components acquired from a bottom moorng ADCP. While the bottom mooring type has a problem to measure the velocity vectors of sound scattering layer distributed near to surface, both the continuous vertical migration patterns and variability of backscatterers were routinely investigated as well. In addition, the velocity vectors were compared with the vertical migration velocity estimated from echograms of Mean Volume Backscattering Strength, and estimated to produce observational bias due to SSLs which is composed of backscatterers such as euphausiids, nekton, and fishes have swimming ability.

The average particle deposition velocity toward a vertical wafer surface in a vertical airflow chamber was measured by a wafer surface scanner(PMS Model SAS-3600). Polystyrene latex(PSL) spheres with diameters between 0.3 and $0.8{\mu}m$ were used. To examine the effect of the airflow velocity on the deposition velocity, experiments were conducted for three vertical airflow velocities ; 20, 30, 50cm/s. Experimental data of particle deposition velocity were compared with those given by prediction model suggested by Liu and Ahn(1987).
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an 8-week velocity-based training on the maximum vertical jump in elite sprinters. Method: Ten elite sprinters were participated in this study (age: 21 ± 0.97 yrs., height: 179 ± 3.54 cm, body mass: 72 ± 2.98 kg). An 8-week velocity-based power training was provided to all subjects for twice per week. Their maximum vertical jumps were measured before and after velocity-based training. A 3-dimensional motion analysis with 8 infrared cameras and 4 channels of EMG was performed in this study. A paired t-test was used for statistical verification. The significant level was set at α=.05. Results: There were no statistically significant differences were found between pre and post the training (p>.05). However, most variables included jump record, knee joint ROM, and muscle activation of rectus femoris showed increased pattern after the training. Conclusion: In this study, an 8-week velocity-based training did not showed the significant training effects. However, knee joint movement which is the key role of the vertical jump revealed positive kinematic and kinetic pattern after the training. From this founding, it is believed that velocity-based training seems positively affect the vertical jump which is the clear measurement of mechanical power of sprinter. In addition, to get more clear evidence of the training more training period would be needed.
