  • In the trackbed design using an elastic multi-layer model, the stress-dependent resilient modulus is the key input parameter, which reflects substructure performance under repeated traffic loading. The prediction models of resilient modulus of crushed stone and weathered granite soil were developed from nonlinear dynamic stiffness, which can be combined by in-situ and laboratory seismic measurements. The models accommodate the variation with the deviatoric and/or bulk stresses. To investigate the performance of the prediction models proposed, the elastic response of the test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement caused by the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of the test sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 1mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation.

  • The Performance of U-tube ground heat exchanger for geothermal heat Pump systems depends on the thermal properties of the soil, as well as grout or backfill materials in the borehole. In-situ tests provide a means of estimating some of these properties. In this study, in-situ thermal response tests were completed on two vertical boreholes, 130 m deep with 62 mm diameter high density polyethylene U-tubes. The tests were conducted by adding a monitored amount of heat to water over a $17\~18$ hour period for each vertical boreholes. By monitoring the water temperatures entering and exiting the loop and heat load, overall thermal conductivity values of grout/soil formation were determined. Two parameter estimation models for evaluation of thermal response test data were compared when applied on the same temperature response data. One model is based on line-source theory and the other is a numerical one-dimensional finite difference model. The average thermal conductivity deviation between measured data and these models is of the magnitude $1\%$ to $5\%$.

  • EM tomography technique has been developed. The algorithm used the extended Born approximations for forward modeling and reconstructed a conductivity image by a smoothness constraint least squares inversion method. Observed data, the vertical components of secondary magnetic fields, were simulated with the 3-D integral equation code. The results showed that the location of anomalous body could be imaged very well, but conductivity of the body was lower than real one and the vertical resolution was much higher than the horizontal resolution.

  • In this study, we developed the 2.5D EM modeling and inversion algorithm for cross-hole source and receiver geometry. Considering the cross-hole environment, we use a VMD (vertical magnetic dipole) as a source and vertical magnetic fields as a measuring data. Developed inversion algorithm is tested for the isolated block model which has a conductive and a resistivity anomaly respectively. For the conductive anomaly, its size and resistivity are inverted well on the inversion results, while for the resistive anomaly, the location of anomalous block is shown on the inverted section, but its values are far from the exact value. Furthermore, artificial conductive anomalies are shown around the resistive anomalous zone. If we consider the inversion artifact shown in the test inversion of restive block, it is almost impossible to image the resistive zone. However, the main target of EM tomography in the engineering problem is conductive target such as fault zone, and contaminated zone etc., EM tomography algorithm can be used for detecting the anomalous zone.

  • The present study investigates noise and condensation characteristics of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is widely used for drainage piping materials, complex double structure by comparing to those of PVC single structure piping materials. In addition, effects of insulation on drainage noise has been measured experimentally. As the results of the experiments, noise reduction effect of PVC complex double structure is superior to that of PVC single structure in terms of elbow and vertical piping materials which are employed for drainage pipes of toilet bowls and bathtub. The insulation barely have effect on the noise reduction in case of the PVC single structure since there is almost no changes in noise occurrence even though the insulation is applied on both elbow and vertical piping materials. Temperature differences between inside and outside of the pipes have been measures for the PVC single and complex double structures as well. In consequence, outside temperature of the PVC complex double structure is higher than that of the PVC single structure. The condensation occurrence time of the PVC complex double structure shows a distinct difference from that of the PVC single structure, thus, the PVC complex double structure has outstanding effect on preventing the condensation.

  • The momentum and kinetic turbulent energy carried by the wind to a stratified lake lead to basin-scale motions, which provide a major driving force for vertical and horizontal mixing. A three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic model was applied to Lake Tahoe, located between California and Nevada, USA, to simulate the dominant basin-scale internal waves in the deep lake. The results demonstrated that the model well represents the temporal and vertical variations of water temperature that allows the internal waves to be energized correctly at the basin scale. Both the model and thermistor chain (TC) data identified the presence of Kelvin modes and Poincare mode internal waves. The lake was weakly stratified during the study period, and produced large amplitude (up to 60 m) of internal oscillations after several wind events and partial upwelling near the southwestern lake. The partial upwelling and followed coastal jets could be an important feature of basin-scale internal waves because they can cause re-suspension and horizontal transport of fine particles from nearshore to offshore. The internal wave dynamics can be also associated with the distributions of water quality variables such as dissolved oxygen and nutrients in the lake. Thus, the basin-scale internal waves and horizontal circulation processes need to be accurately modeled for the correct simulation of the dissolved and particulate contaminants, and biogeochemical processes in the lake.

  • In recent days, navigation technology becomes more important as location based service (LBS) such as E911 and telematics are considered as attractive business fields. Commercial LBS requires that navigation system should be inexpensive and available anytime and anywhere - indoors and outdoors. If we consider these requirements, it is out of question that GPS is the most favorite system in the world. However, GPS has a serious problem. The one is that GPS does not operate indoors well. This is because GPS satellites are about 20,000km above the ground so that indoor signals are too weak to be tracked in GPS receiver. And the other is that vertical accuracy is less than horizontal accuracy, because of GPS satellites' geometry. To solve these problems, many researches have been done around the world since 1990s. This paper is also one of them and we will introduce an excellent solution by use of pseudolite. Pseudolite is a kind of signal generator, which transmits GPS-like signal. So it is same as GPS satellite in ground. In this paper, we will propose the integrated navigation system of GPS and pseudolite and show the flight test results using RC airplane to proof our navigation system. As a result, we could improve the vertical accuracy of airplane into the horizontal accuracy.

  • The resonance properties of circular vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are studied by using a newly developed equivalent network approach. Optical parameters, such as the stop-band or the reflectivity of periodic Bragg mirrors and the resonance wavelength, are explored for the design of these structures. To evaluate the differential quantum efficiency and the threshold current density, a transverse resonance condition of circular modal transmission-line theory is also utilized. This approach dramatically reduces the computational time as well as gives an explicit insight to explore the optical characteristics of circular VCSELs.

  • This paper aims at investigating the characteristics of discharge capacity according to lateral pressure, hydraulic gradient and deformation of drain materials. A series of experiments were conducted to achieve this objective. In experiments, fiver drain boards as well as harmonica and castle types of drain boards were installed in a rubber membrane, and clay in sully was filled around them. The test results showed that the harmonica type of drain boards have the greatest discharge capacity comparing to castle and fiber drain boards. The results also indicated that the hydraulic gradient has more effect on reduction of discharge capacity than the lateral pressure.

  • In general, two methods have been used to predict settlement of soft ground. One method is Terzaghi's one dimensional consolidation theory which gives time-settlement relationship using the standard consolidation test results. The other is forecasting method of ground settlement to be occured in the future using in-situ monitoring data. The above both methods have some defects in application manner or in itself especially in very deep and soft clayey ground. In view of the lessons and experiences of soft ground improvement projects, several techniques were proposed for more accurate theorectical calculation of consolidation settlement as follows ; ① Subdivision of soft ground, ② Consideration of secondary compression, ③ Using the modified compression index, etc. And also, revised hyperbolic fitting method was suggested to minimize the error of predicted future settlement. In addition, revised De-Beer equation of immediate settlement of loose sandy soil was proposed to overcome the tendency to show too small settlement calculation results by original De-Deer equation. And also, considering the various effects of settlement delay in the improved ground by vertical drains, time-settlement caculation equation(Onoue method) was revised to match the tendency of settlement delay by using the characteristics of discharge capacity decreases of vertical drain with time elapse by the pattern of hyperbolic equation.
