Oyster fanning structures in tidal flats are well detected by SAR system. Each frame of these artificial structures is composed of two vertical and one horizontal wooden pole. We investigate characteristics of polarimetric features in the target structures. In this paper, the results of AIRSAR L-band POLSAR data and experiments in laboratory are discussed. The ratio of single bounce to double bounce scattering depends of vertical pole height, direction of horizontal pole to radar look direction, and incidence angle as well as sea surface condition. We have conducted laboratory experiments. According to target scale, Ku-band and targets downsized by scale of 10 are used. The results of the experiments are summarized as: i) total power of the backscattering is more affected by vertical poles than a horizontal pole; ii) and backscattering from a horizontal pole is sensitive to the relative radar look direction to target array. We conclude that water level can be effectively measured by using interferometric phase and backscattering intensity if vertical poles in the water are observed by L-band HH- or VV-polarization. Measurement of tide height can be further improved if double bounced components are separated from fully polarized SAR data.
This study was conducted to develop a methodology to predict utility pole accident rates and to evaluate cost-effectiveness for safety improvement for utility pole accidents. The utility pole accident rate prediction model was based on the encroachment rate approach introduced in the Transportation Research Board Special Report 214. The utility pole accident rate on a section of highway depends on the roadside encroachment rate and the lateral extent of encroachment. The encroachment rate is influenced by the horizontal and vertical alignment of the highway as well as traffic volume and mean speed. The lateral extent of encroachment is affected by the horizontal and vertical alignment, the mean speed and the roadside slope. An analytical method to generate the probability distribution function for the lateral extent of encroachment was developed for six kinds of encroachment types by the horizontal alignment and encroachment direction. The encroachment rate was calibrated with the information on highway and roadside conditions and the utility pole accident records collected on the sections of 55mph speed limit of the State Trunk Highway 12 in Wisconsin. The encroachment rate on a tangent segment was calibrated as a function of traffic volume with the actual average utility pole accident rates by traffic volume strategies. The adjustment factors for horizontal and vertical alignment were then derived by comparing the actual average utility pole accident rates to the estimations from the model calibrated for tangent and level sections. A computerized benefit-cost analysis procedure was then developed as a means of evaluating alternative countermeasures. The program calculates the benefit-cost ratio and the percent of reduction of utility pole accidents resulting from the implementation of a safety improvement. This program can be used to develop safety improvement: alternatives for utility pole accidents when a predetermined performance level is specified.

This study was conducted to investigate the performance times, CM position and CM speed, pole chord length and pole chord angle, whole body angular momentum(X axis), and grip width in pole vault event according to the event and phase; touch down, pole plant, take-off, maximum pole bending pole straight, pole release, peak height, and foot contact, pole contact, free flight. The pole vaulting of four male elite vaulters including six trial were filmed using two video digital cameras at 60 Hz at 56th national athletic match, and data were collected through the DLT method of three dimensional cinematography. In general the better jumper is, the longer the performance time is. And the greater CM speed is, and the better his transformation ability of CM horizontal speed into vertical speed is. As he uses a longer pole, his grip is higher, and it is a enough for him to rock back his body, so that he pulls and pushes the pole well keeping his hips close to. An greater maximum angular momentum and early positioning of the hips parallel to the bar makes his body far side of the bar and his bar clearance easier. Specially our national jumper needs to have more powerful braking force during foot contact phase, and take his body on the pole after maximum pole bending, and pull and push the pole strongly keeping his hips close to. Also he needs to have stronger muscular strength in order to control the longer pole and use the pole of proper tension more efficiently.

In order to know the range of install possibles of the horizontal stay without general stay, strength characteristic tests were performed for the Vertical and 80[$^{\circ}$] inclined concrete poles. From the results of one cycle strength tests, the safety factors were 2.8, 2.5 and 2.1 for the poles of general load, heavy load and high strength load, respectively. However, the crack was occurred when the bending bounds of upper part of pole was above 2[$^{\circ}$], and working load was similar to the rated load of pole at this time. Therefore, it could be concluded that the reinforcement by the installation of the stay and the support was necessary certainly, if the bending bounds of pole, which was installed on a solid foundation, are above 2[$^{\circ}$].

The drilled pier foundation is widely used to support transmission line structures due to its simplicity of construction. When this foundation type is used in conjunction with a single shaft or H-frame structure, it is subjected to a high overturning moment, combined with modest vertical and shear loads. Since the length and diameter of drilled piers are often governed by a maximum permissible deflection, many drilled piers being installed today are very conservatively designed. In this study, Nine prototype field-tests (1/8 scale) have been conducted in order to determine the vertical and lateral resistance of drilled pier foundation for single pole structures. These test results reveal the test piers behaved essentially as rigid bodies in soil (6D) and the center of rotation of the pier were typically 0.6~0.4 of the pier depth below ground surface. Test results also show the relationship between the applied load and the deflection at the top of the pier is highly nonlinear.

In this study, the vibration characteristics and the resonance phenomena of a wind-solar hybrid light pole structure are compared with respect to the wind turbine type through the dynamic response measurement. Two different turbines are considered including 2-bladed and 3-bladed vertical axis wind turbine rotors. The resonance phenomenon that can occur in hybrid light pole structure is analyzed by comparing the dynamic characteristics of the structure and the excitation force under operational conditions. Displacement responses are also estimated using the acceleration measurement data by use of recently proposed method, and it is observed that the amplitude of dynamic displacement responses are in the range of 4-6 cm under the resonance in the case of 2-bladed turbine and those are limited under 2 mm in the case of 3-bladed turbine because there is no resonance.
Lattice steel towers for overhead transmission lines have been replaced by tubular steel poles due to the visual impact of large and complex shape of truss type. Demand for tubular steel poles consisting of a single frame member continues to grow because of its advantages such as visual minimization, architectural appeal and minimal site consumptions. However, there are some constraints on the transportation and construction. As the diameter of tower base has been enlarged, it may exceed minimum height limit required to pass the tunnel in case of land transportation. Also, in a narrow place where it is not easy to secure the installation areas such as mountainous places, there might be some areas wherein it must secure a wide working space so that large vehicles and working cranes will be allowed to enter. In this paper, we presented a vertical separated tubular steel pole, which is a new type of support that can be implemented for general purpose such as mountainous areas or narrow areas to improve the issues raised by breaking away from the conventional design and fabrication methods. Technical approaches for overcoming the limit of the cross-sectional size is to separate and modularize the cross-section of the tubular steel pole designed with a size that cannot be carried or assembled, and to lighten it with a weight capable of being transported and assembled in a narrow space or mountainous area. As a result of this research, it will be possible to enter small and medium sized vehicles in locations where it is restricted to transport by large-sized vehicles. In the case of mountainous areas, it will be possible to divide it into a weight capable of being carried by a helicopter and it will be easy to adjust and fabricate it with individual modules. Furthermore, in order to break away from the traditional construction method, we proposed the equipment that can be applied to the assembly of Tubular Steel Pole without using a large crane in locations where there is no accessible road or in locations wherein large cranes cannot enter. In particular, this paper shows the movable assembling equipment and some methods that are specialized for vertical separated tubular steel pole consisting of members with reduced weight. The proposed assembly equipment is a device for assembling the body of the Tubular Steel Poles. It will be installed inside the support and the modules can be lifted by using the support itself.
The purpose of this study was to perform the kinematic analyses of the men's pole vault skills in IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011. Subjects were the 1st through 8th place finishers in the pole vault. The kinematic analyses were divided into four phases: two dimensional run up analysis, and three dimensional analyses for the remaining plant, swing up, and extension phases. Run-up variables consisted of run up distance, number of steps, average step length, the ratio of step length to his height, average velocity at the final 6~11 m, approach position. Three variables were analyzed during plant: pole angle, center of gravity (COG) velocity, and takeoff angle of COG. Swing up phase variables included: pole flexion angle, COG velocity (horizontal, vertical, resultant), COG trajectory and bar approach angle of COG. Compared to the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, the average vault height, run up velocity and approach position increased. However, horizontal velocity during the last two steps of the final approach decreased dramatically compared to speeds from 1990. These results reflect the change in both technique and improved physical fitness in pole vaulters. During extension, the peak height of COG averaged 0.3m higher then COG height when the pole was released. These specific results can help coaches and athletes modify training and improve performance.

In order to regulate the cutting force at a desired level during peripheral end milling processes a feedrate override Adaptive Control Constraint (ACC) system was developed. The feedrate override function was accomplished through a development of programmable machine controller (PMC) interface technique on the NC controller, Nonlinear model of the cutting process was linearized as an adaptive model with a time varying process parameter. An integral type estimator was introduced for on-line estimation of the cutting process parameter, Zero order hold digital control methodology which uses pole-assignment concept for tuning of PI controllers was applied for the ACC system. Performance of the ACC system wsa confirmed on the vertical machining center equipped with fanuc OMC through a large amount of experiment.
