In Special Concentrically Braced Frames (SCBFs), vertical and horizontal components of the brace force must be resisted by column and beam, respectively but normal force component existing at the gusset plate-to-column and beam interfaces, creates out-of-plane action making distortion in column and beam faces adjacent to the gusset plate. It is a main concern in Hollow Structural Section (HSS) columns and beams where their webs and gusset plate are not in the same plane. In this paper, a new gusset plate passing through the HSS columns and beams, named as through gusset plate, is proposed to study the force transfer mechanism in such gusset plates of SCBFs compared to the case with conventional gusset plates. For this purpose, twelve SCBFs with diagonal brace and HSS columns and twelve SCBFs with chevron brace and HSS columns and beams are considered. For each frame, two cases are considered, one with through gusset plates and the other with conventional ones. Based on numerical results, using through gusset plates prevents distortion and out-of-plane deformation at HSS column and beam faces adjacent to the gusset plate helping the entire column and beam cross-sections to resist respectively vertical and horizontal components of the brace force. Moreover, its application increases energy dissipation, lateral stiffness and strength around 28%, 40% and 32%, respectively, improving connection behavior and raising the resistance of the normal force components at the gusset plate-to-HSS column and beam interfaces to approximately 4 and 3.5 times, respectively. Finally, using such through gusset plates leads to better structural performance particularly for HSS columns and beams with larger width-to-thickness ratio elements.
When the vertical load-bearing members in high-rise structures fail locally, the beam-column joints play an important role in the redistribution of the internal forces. In this paper, a static laboratory test of three full-scale flush flange beam-reinforced connections with side and cover plates (CP-FBSP connection) with double half-span steel beams and single L-shaped columns composed of concrete-filled steel tubes (L-CFST columns) was conducted. The influence of the side plate width and cover plate thickness on the progressive collapse resistance of the substructure was thoroughly analyzed. The failure mode, vertical force-displacement curves, strain variation, reaction force of the pin support and development of internal force in the section with the assumed plastic hinge were discussed. Then, through the verified finite element model, the corresponding analyses of the thickness and length of the side plates, the connecting length between the steel beam flange and cover plate, and the vertical-force eccentricity were carried out. The results show that the failure of all the specimens occurred through the cracking of the beam flange or the cover plate, and the beam chord rotations measured by the test were all greater than 0.085 rad. Increasing the length, thickness and width of the side plates slightly reduced the progressive collapse resistance of the substructures. The vertical-force eccentricity along the beam length reduced the progressive collapse resistance of the substructure. An increase in the connecting length between the beam flange and cover plate can significantly improve the progressive collapse resistance of substructures.

The interaction between incident waves and a floating rectangular breakwater with the vertical porous side plates has been investigated in the context of the two-dimensional linear potential theory. The matched eigenfunction expansion method(MEEM) for multiple domains is applied to obtain the analytic solutions. The dependence of the transmitted coefficients and motion responses on the design parameters, such as porosity and protruding depth of side plates, is systematically analyzed. It is found that the non-dimensional wavelength where the sudden drop of transmission coefficients occurs, corresponds to the heave resonant frequency obtained from Ruol et al. (2013) for $\pi$-type floating breakwater. It is concluded that both properly selected porosity and deeper protruding depth of side plates are helpful in reducing the transmission coefficients and also extending the wider applicable extent of incident wavelength for performance enhancement.
An application is presented of a modified Vlasov model to the free vibration analysis of plates resting on elastic foundations. The effects of the subsoil depth, the ratio of the plate dimensions, the ratio of the subsoil depth to the plate dimension in the longer direction, and the value of the vertical deformation parameter within the subsoil on the frequency parameters of plates on an elastic foundation are investigated. This analysis has been caried out by the aid of a computer program. The first ten frequency parameters are presented in tabular and the graphical forms to evaluate the effects of the parameters considered in this study. Then mode shapes corresponding to the first six of the frequency parameters are given in graphs. It is concluded that the effect of the subsoil depth on the frequency parameters of the plates on an elastic foundation is generally larger than those of the other parameters considered in this study.

The HR Plates made hot rolled coils is lower than general structural steel plates in price. No difference between general steel plates and HR Plates with thickness up to 22mm are found in most characters such as cutting operation, fabrication and even welding. It can be concluded that HR Plates with thickness up to 22mm can be applied to flanges and webs of any girders as well as longitudinal ribs, longitudinal and vertical stiffeners of steel bridges appropriately. To increase the demand of HR Plates with thickness up to 22mm, it is necessary that HR Plates is applicable to full member in steel bridge including main girder. In this study, availabilities of the narrow steel box girder of light railway transit with HR Plate width as a main member are discussed. For application of HR Plate to steel bridge with 50m span or more, new support systems in three types are presented. Computational analysis is performed in 15 bridge models of light railway transit with beam element and plate element. As a analysis results, three models in light railway transit are presented. We finally come to the conclusion that HR Plates can be apply to narrow steel box girder in the light railway transit.
A $50{\times}50{\mu}m^2$ aluminum micromirror array is fabricated using surface micromachining technology. $50{\times}50$ micromirrors are arrayed two dimensionally. The micromirror plate is supported by a vertical spring structure that is placed underneath the mirror plate. When the mirror plates reflect a light, the micromirror array un have large effective reflecting area. Fabrication of vertical spring uses only one mask and shadow evaporation process.
Analytical solutions to problems are crucial because they provide high-quality comparison data for assessing the accuracy of numerical solutions. Benchmark analytical solutions for the vibrations of cracked functionally graded material (FGM) plates are not available in the literature because of the high level of complexity of such solutions. On the basis of first-order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT), this study proposes analytical series solutions for the vibrations of FGM rectangular plates with side or internal cracks parallel to an edge of the plates by using Fourier cosine series and the domain decomposition technique. The distributions of FGM properties along the thickness direction are assumed to follow a simple power law. The proposed analytical series solutions are validated by performing comprehensive convergence studies on the vibration frequencies of cracked square plates with various crack lengths and under various boundary condition combinations and by performing comparisons with published results based on various plate theories and the theory of three-dimensional elasticity. The results reveal that the proposed solutions are in excellent agreement with literature results obtained using the Ritz method on the basis of FSDT. The paper also presents tabulations of the first six nondimensional frequencies of cracked rectangular Al/Al2O3 FGM plates with various aspect ratios, thickness-to-width ratios, crack lengths, and FGM power law indices under six boundary condition combinations, the tabulated frequencies can serve as benchmark data for assessing the accuracy of numerical approaches based on FSDT.
Composite beams using bolts to attach steel plates to the side faces of existing reinforced concrete (RC) coupling beams can enhance both their strength and deformability. The behavior of those composite beams differs substantially from the behavior of typical composite beams made up of steel beams and concrete slabs. The former are subjected to longitudinal, vertical and rotational slips, while the latter only involve longitudinal slip. In this study, a mixed analysis method was adopted to develop the fundamental equations for accurate prediction of the load-carrying capacity of steel plate strengthened RC coupling beams. Then, a rigid plastic analysis technique was used to cope with the full composite effect of the bolt group connections. Two theoretical models for the determination of the strength of medium-length plate strengthened coupling beams based on mixed analysis and rigid plastic methods are presented. The strength of the strengthened coupling beams is derived. The vertical and longitudinal slips of the steel plates and the shear strength of the anchor-bolt connection group is considered. The theoretical models are validated by the available experimental results presented in a companion paper. The strength of the specimens predicted from the mixed analysis model is found to be in good agreement with that from the experimental results.

This study was conducted to identify the structural performance of the opening in a location close to the support point in the perforated beam system of steel beams. In addition, structural performance was determined through experiments on reinforced openings using vertical and horizontal steel plates. In the steel simple beam, it was found that the opening was in a position closer to the support point, half the height of the steel beam (D/2), which was more appropriate than the height of the steel beam (D). In addition, the reinforcement effect of horizontal steel plate was greater than that of vertical steel plate reinforcement. Structural performance was improved when there was no gap between openings and steel plates.

The mixed convection heat transfer from vertical inline plates has been studied numerically by the finite difference method and experimentally with Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The dimensionless spacing, $s/L_1$, the relative length, $L_2/L_1$ and the dimensionless temperature ratio, ${\Phi}_2/{\Phi}_1$ are varied parametically. The lower plate mean Nusselt numbers show same values as $s/L_1$, ${\Phi}_2/{\Phi}_1$ and $L_2/L_1$ increase. The upper plate mean Nusselt numbers increase as $s/L_1$ and ${\Phi}_2/{\Phi}_1$ increase, but $L_2/L_1$ decreases. The upper plate mean Nusselt number is higher than the lower plate mean Nusselt for $s/L_1$ 1.8 at Re=100, $Gr=10^4$, Pr=0.71, $L_2/L_1=0.5$ and ${\Phi}_2/{\Phi}_1=1.0$. A comparison between the experimental and numerical results show good agreement.
