The effects on the performance of natural smoke exhaust ventilators installed in high-rise buildings were analyzed depending on the wind velocities and smoke temperatures using CONTAMW tool. The results showed that the smoke exhaust ventilators can maintain given performances in such conditions as low smoke temperatures and low wind velocities. However, high smoke temperatures and high wind velocities can prevent the smoke ventilators to exhaust smokes from the fire room. Significant changes in stack effects in high-rise buildings can also occur with the opening of smoke ventilators in the fire floor.

Gravity ventilators allow the escape of the warm air and air contaminants due to both (either) buoyancy and (or) convection. As a natural ventilation strategy, various gravity ventilators can be installed on the roof. Ventilation efficiency could be affected by various parameters, such as, area of openings, wind velocity and incidence angle, temperature difference between inside and outside, and shape of ventilator. Especially, the shape of roof gravity ventilator might be one of influencing factors for the effective ventilation. The window type gravity ventilators are frequently installed instead of general (standard) gravity ventilator. However, the ventilation efficiencies of them were not proved yet. To compare the ventilation efficiency, general type ventilator and two window type ventilators were numerically tested. Mean age of air, temperature and CO concentration were predicted by using commercial CFD code, AIRPAK (Ver. 2.0) with various conditions. The predicted result showed that general type ventilator is more effective for natural ventilation than window type ventilators.
This paper is how to improve contaminated air by the pollutant from vehicles through ventilators and entrance at the underground station. We are looking for the environment management to take care of customers. There is two ventilation systems. One is natural ventilation system, the other is forced ventilation system. Usually, subway ventilators were installed low on the sidewalk. There are lots of craps on the ventilators, so these things interrupt influx of outside air. But the gas from the vehicles comes into the station through entrance. There is lots of noise while ventilations run. So we install the supply air vents away from the road for the customers. If it's difficult, we cover around the ventilator with clear plastic plates more than 2M heights. We also install silencer on the ventilators. We install the air curtains on the entrances to prevent dust from outside. Seoul Metropolitan has a plan to make 60M deep underground road. To improve underground road air quality, ventilators should be installed that consider the above information.
Natural smoke ventilator is one of domestic prescriptive methods to be used to exhaust smoke in case of fire in a high-rise buildings. The goal of this study is to evaluate the stack effect and the smoke exhaust performance in high-rise buildings with the opening of natural smoke ventilators using computer modeling technology, thus to estimate its effectiveness as a tool of smoke exhaust. For this purpose, the pressure differential in a domestic high-rise building with natural smoke ventilators was experimentally measured to analyze the stack effect with the closure or the opening of natural smoke ventilators and to calculate compensated air leakage of the building. Computer modeling based on experimentally measured data was carried out to estimate effectiveness of natural smoke ventilators in high-rise buildings using CONTAMW network program.
The performance of natural smoke ventilators in High-rise buildings was analyzed by investigating the stack effect depending on the wind velocities using CONTAMW tool. The results showed that the opening of smoke ventilators can influence on the stack effect in the building thus moving the position of the neutral plane toward the opened smoke ventilators. The outside wind velocities can move up the neutral plane toward the top of the building thus increasing pressure differentials at the bottom of the building. The smoke ventilators can maintain its normal performance without outside wind, however, strong outside wind can prevent natural smoke exhaust due to the infiltration of outside air at the ventilators.
Purpose. This study aimed to explore family caregivers' experiences with ventilator-dependent patients at home. Methods. The number of patients using mechanical ventilators at home is expected to increase and family caregivers must be able to care for them. However, few studies focus on the experiences of family caregivers. We conducted in-depth interviews with 11 family caregivers who cared for a ventilator-dependent patient at home in South Korea. Data were analyzed using phenomenological method of enquiry. Results. Statements generated from the interviews on the meaning of the family caregiver's experiences were organized into 27 themes, 5 theme clusters, and 2 categories. The theme clusters included endurance under the burden situation, role strain as a caregiver, separation from others, trying to find coping methods, and oriental ethnical customs. Family caregivers of patients using domestic mechanical ventilators need systematic education and emotional support to cope with the challenges of managing ventilator equipment and learning new ways of communicating with patients on the ventilators. Conclusion. These findings may contribute to family caregivers' knowledge and competence, thereby allowing them to better support their ventilator-dependent family members.
Objectives : This study aims to present a new classification system using evaluation standards to ensure the safety of transport ventilators used in Korea. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, various types of ventilators have been developed and as the range of application increases, so does demand. With quick access to information and a growing economy, the technology used in Korean hospitals is equivalent to that of other countries; however, regulatory and safety consciousness are still lagging in Korea. Methods : Based on researching overseas cases, reference data and standards for improving the current system in Korea are proposed. Results : According to the review of transport ventilator use in Korea, it was found that concerns about safety is due to the absence of a standardized classification system for evaluating the safety and effectiveness of transport ventilators. Conclusions : In order to improve the safety of patients and the quality of medical care, it is essential to establish guidelines and assessment standards guaranteeing the safety of transport ventilators in Korea. Clear definitions and classifications for devices must precede the application of such standards. In addition, effective evaluation standards should be developed in order to resolve problems and improve upon the current system through continuous validation.
The mass flow rates and performance of natural smoke ventilators in high-rise buildings with 40, 80, 120 stories were evaluated using CONTAMW tool. The results showed that only limited part of smoke ventilators can have positive exhaust flow in high-rise buildings due to stack effect and wind velocities. In the higher story buildings larger stack effect can overcome outside strong wind effect to give more ventilation performance. The air tightness of the building have strong effect on the exhaust performance of the ventilators to give lower performance with loose air tightness of the exterior walls.

Total heat recovery type ventilators that are connected to each room with ducts are mainly installed in Korea, but they raise concern over duct pollution. In this study, indoor environments made by thin line type ventilators installed in dwelling units of apartment houses are investigated by CFD. Results show the case that thin line type ventilators installed in each room-including kitchens-make the best indoor environment that maintains air velocity at under 0.25m/s, and evenly distributes the age of air in all areas.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to identify the effect of music therapy on the physiologic index, anxiety and dyspnea of patients who are weaning from mechanical ventilators, and to compare the effects between western and Korean traditional music. Methods: The research format is repeated measures design. The subject group consisted of 21 patients being weaned from mechanical ventilators in a tertiary general hospital in Seoul. Each patient randomly received western music, rest, and Korean traditional music. Western and Korean traditional music were played on an MP3 head phone for 30 minutes. Patients get 30 minutes of rest between the 2 music styles and the rest period. Physiological indices, anxiety and dyspnea were measured before and after patients listened to both styles of music and the rest period. Anxiety and dyspnea were measured with a visual analogue scale. Results: Respiratory rates (RR), rapid shallow breath indexes (RSBI), anxiety and dyspnea decreased, and tidal volume (TV) increased after listening to Western and Korean tradition music in patients weaning from mechanical ventilators. Compared to western music, Korean traditional music yielded significant decreases in RR, RSBI, anxiety and dyspnea, and an increase of TV. Conclusion: Western and Korean traditional music would decrease RR, RSBI, anxiety and dyspnea and increase TV of patients who are weaning from mechanical ventilators. The effects are more pronounced in patients listening to Korean traditional music compared to western music.
