  • In order to investigate the fracture behaviors(penetration modes) and resistance to penetration during ballistic impact of surface hardening treated Aluminum, Titanium alloy laminates, ballistic tests were conducted. In this paper, Anodized Al 5083-H131 alloy laminates and nitrified Ti (Gr.2) alloy laminates were used to achieve higher surface hardness. Surface hardness test were conducted using a Micro victor's hardness tester and thickness of surface hardening treated specimens was measured by video microscope. Resistance to penetration is determined by the protection ballistic limit($V_50$), a statistical velocity with 50% probability far complete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are respectfully observed at and above ballistic limit velocities, as a result of $V_50$ test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test methods. PTP tests were conducted with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. $V_50$ tests with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature were conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests.

  • Ground stiffness(shear wave velocity) is one of the key parameters in geotechnical earthquake engineering. An In-situ seismic technique has its own advantages and disadvantages over the others in stiffness measurements. By combining the crosshole and seismic cone techniques and utilizing favourable features of bender elements, a new hybrid probe has been developed in order to enhance data quality and easiness of testing. The basic structure of the probe, called "MudFork", is a fork composed of two blades, on each of which source and receiver bender elements were mounted respectively. To evaluate the disturbance caused by the penetration of the probe, shear wave velocity measurements were carried out in the Kaolinite slurry in the laboratory. Finally, the probe was penetrated in coastal mud near Incheon, Korea, using SPT(standard penetration test)rods pushed with a routine boring machine and shear wave velocity measurements were carried out. The results were verified with data from laboratory and cone testing. The performance of the probe turns out to be excellent in terms of data quality and testing convenience.

  • Impact damages induced by a low-velocity impact load on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite plates fabricated with various stacking sequences were studied experimentally. The impact responses of the CFRP composite plates were significantly affected by the laminate stacking sequences. Three types of specimens, specifically quasi-isotropic, unidirectional, and cross-ply, were tested by a constant impact carrying the same impact energy level. An impact load of 3.44 kg, corresponding to 23.62 J, was applied to the center of each plate supported at the boundaries. The unidirectional composite plate showed the worst impact resistance and broke completely into two parts; this was followed by the quasi-isotropic lay-up plate that was perforated by the impact. The cross-ply composite plate exhibited the best resistance to the low-velocity impact load; in this case, the impactor bounced back. Impact parameters such as the peak impact force and absorbed energy were evaluated and compared for the impact resistant characterization of the composites made by different stacking sequences.

  • In order to investigate the fracture behaviors(perforation modes) and resistance to perforation during ballistic impact of aluminum alloy plate, ballistic tests were conducted. Depth of penetration experiments with 5.56mm-diameter ball projectile launched into 25mm-thickness Al 5052-H34 targets were conducted. A powder gun launched the 3.55g projectiles at striking velocities between 0.6 and 1.0 km/s. radiography of the damaged targets showed different penetration modes as striking velocities increased. Resistance to perforation is determined by the protection ballistic limit($V_{50}$), a statistical velocity with 50% probability for complete perforation. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by perforation modes, are respectfully observed at and above ballistic limit velocities, as a result of $V_{50}$ test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test methods. PTP tests were conducted with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. $V_{50}$ tests with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature were conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete perforation during PTP tests. The effect of various impact velocity are studied with depth of penetration.

  • A particle trajectory model to simulate two-phase particle-laden crossjets into two-dimensional horizontal free stream has been developed to study the variations of the jet trajectories and velocity variations of the gaseous and the particulate phases. The following conclusions may be drawn from the predicted results, which are in agreement with experimental observations. The penetration of the two-phase jet in a crossflow is greater than that of the single-phase jet. The penetration of particles into the free stream increases with increasing particle size, solids-gas loading ratio and carrier gas to free stream velocity ratio at the jet exit. When the particle size is large, the solid particles separate from the carrier gas , while the particles are completely suspended in the carrier gas for the case of small size particles. As the particle to carrier gas velocity ratio at the jet exit is less than unity, the particles in the vicinity of the jet exit are accelerated by the carrier gas. As the injection angle is increased, the difference of the particle trajectory from that of the pure gas becomes larger. Therefore, it can be concluded that the velocities and trajectories of the particle-laden jets in a crossflow change depending on the solids-gas loading ratio, particle size, carrier gas to free stream velocity ratio and particle to gas velocity ratio at the jet exit.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the global spray behavior and spray characteristics of high-pressure fuel injector in the direct-injection goasoline enginet. The atomization characteristics of fuel spary such as mean droplet size, mean velocity , and velocity distribution were measured by the phase Doppler particle analyzer. The spray tip penetration and spray width were investigated by the result fo visualizaiton experiment. The quantitiative spary characteristics of injector spray were measured under various sparay conditions and ambient pressures. The results of experiment show that the increase in ambient pressure have influence on the spray tip penetration and spray development process. Also, the influence of injection pressure and measuring location on the mean velocity and droplet size distribution were discussed.

  • The design of missile require extremely small warheads that must be highly efficient and lethal. The penetration characteristics of each penetrator and the total number of penetrators on the warhead are obvious key factors that influence warhead lethality. The design of the penetrator shape and size are directly related to the space and weight of the warhead. The design of the penetrator L/D was directly related to the space and weight of the warhead. L and D are the length and the diameter of the projectile, respectively. The AUTODYN-3D code was used to study the effect of penetrator penetration. The objective of numerical analysis was to determine the penetration characteristics of penetrator produced by hypervelocity impacts under different initial conditions such as initial velocity, obliquity angle and L/D of penetrator. The residual velocity and residual mass were decreased with increasing initial impact velocity under $L/D{\leq}4$.

  • In the present paper, a methodology has been presented for the reliability assessment of concrete barriers that lie at a certain depth in the soil, and a missile (a rigid projectile) impacts the top of the soil cover normally, and subsequently after penetrating the soil cover completely it hits the barrier with certain striking velocity. For this purpose, using expressions available in the literature, striking velocity of missile at any depth of soil has been derived and then expressions for the depths of penetration in crater and tunnel region of concrete barrier have been deduced. These depths of penetration have been employed for the derivation of limit state functions. Using the derived limit state functions reliability assessment of underground concrete barrier has then been carried out through First Order Reliability Method (FORM). To study the influence of various random variables on barrier reliability, sensitivity analysis has also been carried out. In addition, a number of parametric studies is conducted to obtain the results of practical interest.

  • This paper describes the characteristic analysis of ice impact force for the Arctic structure shape. In the present study an energy method has been used to predict the impact force during the ice-structure collision. This study also employs two concepts for reference contact area and normalized stress in analysis procedure. The influences of factors, such as impact velocity, full penetration depth, structure shape and ice floe size, are investigated. Full penetration occurs, particularly at lower impact velocity when ice thickness increase. But "typical size" ice floe does not expected ever to achieve full penetration during the impact procedure. The structure shape is the dominant factor in ice impact force characteristic. The results for various ice-structure collision scenarios are analyzed.
