Phase Resonance in a Centrifugal Compressor

  • Phase resonance in a centrifugal compressor was experimentally observed and simulated with a commercial CFD code. It was found that pressure fluctuation at the volute outlet becomes the maximum when the rotational speed of the modes caused by the rotor-stator interaction agrees with the sound velocity. A simple one-dimensional theory is presented to explain the phase resonance in turbomachinery.

  • In engineering application of large eddy simulation, there are still questions as follows grid dependency on numerical results, the effect of upwind scheme against a calculation instability, appropriate boundary conditions dealing with turbulence fluctuation and the performance of SGS models. In this study, in order to develop the LES to the engineering application, large eddy simulation was carried out to investigate the effect of upwind scheme, turbulent subgrid model and the grid dependancy of the flow around a wall-mounted cube in a channel at Re=40,000 based on cubic height and bulk mean velocity. The computed velocities, turbulence quantities, separation and reattachment length were evaluated compared with the experimental results of R. Matinuzzi and C. Tropea.

폴라캐비티(Polar Cavity)의 유동특성에 관한 수치해석 (A Numerical Analysis on the Flow Characteristics of Polar Cavity)

  • A numerical study of the flow of incompressible fluid in a polar cavity is presented. Irregular grids is proposed by applying the interior division principle to the variables on polar coordinate grid formation. Stability analysis and the pressure correction method of SOLA algorithms were discussed in detail on cylindrical coordinates. The results present that unsteady flow behavior appears over $Re=3{\times}10^4$ on polar cavities but nearly steady state at $Re=10^4$. Furthermore, with increasing Reynolds numbers, vortices behaviors indicate more complicated flow phenomena and more severe temporal fluctuation of total kinetic energy and time variation of velocity components at arbitrary pick-up points are detected in case of $Re=5{\times}10^4$.

  • The computer program for the prediction of the volumetric efficiency of 4-cycle single cylinder diesel engine was developed using the characteristic method which considers the effects of friction, heat transfer and specific heat. The results of calculation by this program are as follows; 1. The back flowing was arised at the beginning and the closing stage of inlet valve, and the back flowing mass and velocity decrease as the engine speed increases. 2. The volumetric efficiency varies with the engine speed and the length of inlet manifold. There was an optimum length of inlet manifold for each specified engine speed. 3. The pressure fluctuation and friction effect in the inlet manifold became very important factors for the determination of the volumetric efficiency.

Unsteady Swirling Flows Arising in Straight Tubes

  • The objective of this study is to clarify the occurrence of the high-speed mode of unsteady swirling flows in straight tubes. The unsteady flows generated in the tube were measured by means of a semiconductor-type pressure transducer and an FFT analyzer. The high-speed mode measured has rotational speed which is approximately equal to or higher than the peripheral velocity of the swirling flow. The unsteady flow is due to cell rotation in the circumferential direction of the tube. The occurrence of the high-speed mode was confirmed, and the characteristics (rotational speed, pressure amplitude, and phase) of this mode were clarified. In order to understand the measured unsteady flows, the three dimensional vortex core profiles were discussed based on the distributions of the pressure amplitude and phase.

  • Torque fluctuation of an engine and angular velocity variation of a propeller shaft are the main excitation sources in a vehicle driveline. This paper presents the mechanism of these excitation sources. An equivalent model of the engine system and propeller shaft system is constructed to simulate the excitation phenomena. The analytical model contains the geometrical and dynamic mechanism. Combustion pressure of the cylinder is measured from dynamometer. The computer simulation is carried out by commercial program package. Results of the simulations show the characteristics of the torsional excitation source of the driveline.

Characteristics of Self-excited Combustion Oscillation and Combustion Control by Forced Pulsating Mixture Supply

  • Characteristics of self-excited combustion oscillation are experimentally studied using confined premixed flames stabilized by a rearward-facing step. A new idea to suppress combustion oscillation was applied to the flames. The characteristics of unsteady combustion were examined, which is driven by forced pulsating mixture supply that can modulate its amplitude and frequency. The self-excited combustion oscillation having weaker flow velocity fluctuation intensity than that of the forced pulsating supply can be suppressed by the method. The effects of the forced pulsation amplitude and frequency on controlling self-excited combustion oscillations were also investigated comparing with the steady mixture supply. The unsteady combustion used in this experiment plays an important role in controlling self-excited combustion oscillations, and it also exhibits desirable performances, from a practical point of view, such as high combustion load and reduced pollutant emissions of nitric oxide.

  • It has been long suspected that the transition region may give rise to local pressure fluctuations and radiated sound that are different from those created by the fully-developed turbulent boundary layer at equivalent Reynolds number. Experimental investigation described in this paper concerns the characteristics of pressure fluctuations at the transition. Flush-mounted microphones and hot wires are used to measure the pressure fluctuations and local flow velocities within the boundary layer in the low noise wind tunnel. From this experiment we could observe the spatial and temporal development process of T-S wave using Wigner-Ville method and find the relations between the characteristic frequency of T-S wave and free stream velocity and the boundary layer thickness based on nondimensional pressure spectra scaled on outer variables.

  • Engine misfire causes of the negative effect on exhaust emission such as HC, CO, and NOX . Moreover, it causes damage to the three-way-catalyst(TWC) system permanently. The crankshaft velocity fluctuation(CVF) method has been applied for the real cars as misfire detection system usually, which utilizes the crank angle sensor input to calculate the variation of the crankshaft rotational speed. But this approach has the limit due to the fact that three could be problem under certain engine condition like as deceleration or high speed condition . Therefore the development of new methods are requested today. This study introduced the new method of misfire detection using breakdown voltage(BDV) characteristics between spark plug electrouds.

장방형 해양구조물의 변장비에 따른 와방출 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Vortex Shedding Characteristics of Rectangular Marine Structure With Aspect Ratio)

  • High negative pressure coefficient is formed in the corner of the bluff body structures. For many curtain wall designers this phenomena is of interest because this high negative pressure coefficient is adopted in structural calculation. The present study is aimed to investigate shedding vortex characteristics of two-dimensional rectangular prism flow. Unsteady calculation by finite difference method based upon SOLA is carried out for three aspect ratios(1:1, 1:2, 1:3) of Re=10$^4$ in viscous incompressible flow within infinite domain. Fluctuation of velocity components at various pick-up points and time variation of drag and lift coefficients are analysed by FFT method to reveal shedding vortex frequency patterns. At aspect ratio 1:1, one primary Strouhal number appears for about all pick-up points. At aspect ratio 1:2, two representative Strouhal numbers are classified by pick-up positions and their flows show two different reattachment patterns. For aspect ratio 1:3, frequency spectrum maintains multiple peaks.
