  • To provide active notification and enhance drivers'awareness of their surroundings, a vision-based collision warning system that detects and monitors surrounding vehicles is proposed in this paper. The main objective is to prevent possible vehicle collisions by monitoring the status of surrounding vehicles, including the distance to the other vehicles in front, behind, to the left and to the right sides. In addition, the proposed system collects and integrates this information to provide advisory warnings to drivers. To offer the correct notification, an algorithm based on features of edge and morphology to detect vehicles is also presented. The proposed system has been implemented in embedded systems and evaluated on real roads in various lighting and weather conditions. The experimental results indicate that the vehicle detection ratios were higher than 97% in the daytime, and appropriate for real road applications.

  • In this paper, we propose a technique of drowsiness detection using machine vision. The drowsiness of vehicle driver is often the primary cause of motor vehicle accidents. Therefore, the checking of eye images for detecting drowsiness status of driver is critical for preventing these accidents. In our suggested method, we analyze the changes of histogram and edge of eye region images which are acquired using CCD camera. We developed a drowsiness detection system using the histogram and edge change information. The experimental results show that our proposed method enhances the accuracy of detecting drowsiness nearly to 98%, and can be used for preventing vehicle accidents due to the drowsiness of drivers.

  • Electrical Power System (EPS) of Electric Vehicle which consists of batteries, motor and driving subsystem, has been modeled. A battery model is modeled with an electrical circuit representing a characteristics of real battery. Driving subsystem is modeled as three different level namely exact, average and functional models. Load profile includes road information, speed profile and EV mechanical parameters, which are incorporated into a reference torque in the driving subsystem model. A system model is integrated to simulate the performance of electric vehicle such as energy balance, battery status, and electrical stress of each subsystem.

  • Automatic Transmission System(ATS) was designed to replace the human's manual operation of the gear box. So far, this system operates with the fixed shift pattern information. In this paper, new algorithm considering driver's operation tendency is proposed. Also, to get rid of the uselessly frequent shift of the ATS, the conditions and the status of the vehicle would be included for the evaluation in making a decision of shifting. A field test is done in a car equipped with the computer set connected to Transmission Control Units(TCU) to check the status of the test car, and it shows the excellency of the proposed algorithm.

  • This paper describes the transmission method of an information using communication networks between RTU(Remote Terminal Unit) and PCU(Protection and Control System) of the DC switchgear for Light Railway Vehicle. Also the test result carried out in the laboratory was represented. In this test, transmission signal waveform, polling time, response time and request/response frame between RTU and PCU were measured. The field test including the measurements of analog signal and status of the digital logic operation of PCU was conducted in Gyeongsan Test Track.

  • According to increase of the number of electronic devices for user comfort and safety, electronic systems are being constructed by using network to effectively control the devices. In this paper, we design and implement the MOST network diagnostic system by using wireless LAN to diagnose MOST network and the devices connected by the network and to effectively manage them. MOST, which is a vehicle multimedia network standard for the next generation, is being used for construction of car infotainment systems, and enables to develop various devices which are required for them. The wireless diagnostic system implemented in this paper enables to self-diagnose MOST network and also to check errors by diagnosing status of MOST electronic devices. We also can check and manage status of a in-vehicle MOST network system using mobile devices based on wireless LAN.

  • Today, many countries around the world recognize the development of autonomous vehicles as a national growth engine, support technology development through various projects, and promote it as national policy. China and Korea are representative countries that are strongly promoting autonomous vehicle policies. The Chinese government's policy direction for self-driving cars focuses on support for fostering new industries. Korea has established mid- to long-term goals and plans to foster the future mobility industry as a key growth engine and is promoting these as a national task. Recently, China and Korea have established national pilot areas to test autonomous vehicle operation and are actively pursuing policies. We aim to compare and analyze the operation status of self-driving cars in China's Xiong'an New Area and South Korea's Sejong City and derive policy implications regarding self-driving cars, which are emerging as a key industry of the future. According to the analysis results, it was found that China's Xiong'an New District is ahead of Korea's Sejong City in terms of leader leadership. As a result, autonomous driving is being operated at the government-wide and national level in Xiong'an New Area. In terms of the driving force, in the case of Xiongan New Area, the policy is being promoted by companies centered on Baidu, and in the case of Sejong City, the policy is being promoted by the local government. As a result, it is estimated that Xiongan New Area will be able to reach commercialization before Sejong City. In the final policy proposal, it was proposed to break away from the existing government-led method and switch to a collaboration with the private sector and a private-led method.

  • According to the Korean Traffic Accident Analysis System (TAAS), more than 200,000 traffic accidents occur every year. Also, the statistics including auto insurance companies data show 1.3 million traffic accidents. In the case of TAAS, the types of traffic accidents are simply divided into four; frontal collision, side collision, rear collision, and rollover. However, more detailed information is needed to assess for advanced driver assist systems at intersections. For example, directional information is needed, such as whether the vehicle in the car accident way in a straight or a left turn, etc. This study intends to redefine the type of accident with the more clear driving direction and path by referring to the Negligence standards used in automobile insurance accidents. The standards largely divide five categories of car-to-car/motorcycle /pedestrian/cyclist, and highway, and the each category is classified into dozens of types by status of the traffic signal, conflict situations. In order to present more various accident types for auto insurance accidents, the standards are reclassified driving direction and path of vehicles from crash situations. In results, the car-to-car accidents are classified into 33 accident types, car-to-pedestrian accidents have 19 accident types, car-to-motorcycle accidents have 38 accident types, and car-to-cyclist accidents are derived into 26 types.
