Productivity Changes by Public Transport Reforms in the Seoul's Urban Bus Industry (서울의 대중교통체계 개편에 따른 시내버스업체의 생산성 변화)

  • The Seoul City Government recently reformed the entire public transport system in an effort to prevent further deterioration in urban bus system's performance and service level. To analyze into impact on the productivity of Seoul's urban bus firms, this paper measures firm-level technical efficiency and productivity change with data envelopment analysis and Malmquist index approach. The paper then conceptualizes that these forms produce three kinds of output (bus-kilometers, passengers, or bus-kilometers and passengers) using five inputs (driver, maintenance, management, vehicle and fuel). The findings show that most (over one half) firms experienced a decline (an improvement) in productivity in the case of specifying only bus-kilometers (passengers) as output. As a result, it is discovered that an average firm had no change in productivity in the case of combining bus-kilometers and passengers as output. This is because the efficiency of an average firm declined due to increase in employees per bus and to an decrease in kilometers per bus. while its effectiveness improved due to an increase in passengers per bus which was caused by an increase in routes and a change in fare structure.

  • This paper is a study on the bi-directional DC-DC converter, one of the key elements of 48V-12V dual systems in mild hybrid electric vehicles. Mild hybrid electric vehicles require a bi-directional DC-DC converter that can efficiently transmit power in two directions between a 48V battery and a 12V battery. To develop a bi-directional DC-DC converter with better price competitiveness, upgraded fuel economy, excellent performance and smaller size, this study designed, produced and presented a circuit that improved on the existing one. In the proposed 8-phase bi-directional DC-DC converter, the size of the passive element was reduced through the 8-phase interleaved topology, whereas downscaling had previously posed a difficulty. This study also designed and produced a 2.5kW class prototype. Based on the proposed 8-phase interleaved topology, a size of 227.5 (W) * 172 (L) * 64.35 (H) was achieved. In the boost mode operation and buck operation modes, the maximum efficiency was recorded at 94.04 % and 95.78 %, respectively.

  • A study was carried out on the level of heavy metals, total coliform and benzo(a)pyrene that may be introduced through by-product fertilizers or air pollution to turfgrass in natural turfgrass playground in elementary schools around the western coast and eastern mountain areas in Jeollabuk-do, Korea. The level of heavy metals found in turfgrass was in the order of Cu > Zn > Pb > Cd. The majority of heavy metals was found in the roots. It is presumed that the absorption of some air pollutants and by-product fertilizers or chemical fertilizers. The level of benzo(a)pyrene showed an average of 0.05ng/g with a range between 0.02 to 0.08ng/g in the leaves. In the meantime, none was detected in the stems, while the average for roots was 0.02ng/g with a range between 0.01 and 0.03ng/g. The level detected is that found background level, however, benzo(a)pyrene can be introduced partly from the unstable combustion of fossil fuel or through vehicle emissions. Total coliform distributed in grass showed an average of 12MPN/100ml with a range between 2 and 36MPN/100ml. The density of total coliform displayed no regional predominance. However, in some urban areas, the density was slightly higher. The feces of pets or by-product fertilizers may have contributed to the input of pathogenic micro-organism. Yet the level was found to be negligible.

  • Electrochemical hydrogenation/dehydrogenation properties were studied for a single particle of a Mm-based(Mm : misch metal) hydrogen storage alloy($MmNi_{3.55}Co_{0.75}Mn_{0.4}Al_{0.3}$) for the anode of Ni-MH batteries. A carbon fiber microelectrode was manipulated to make electrical contact with an alloy particle, and the cyclic voltammetry and the galvanostatic charge/discharge experiments were performed. A single particle of the alloy showed the discharge capacity of 280[mAh/g], the value being 90[%] of the theoretical capacity. Data were compared with that of the composite film consisting of the alloy particles and a polymer binder, which is more practical form for Ni-MH batteries. Additionally, pulverization of the alloy particles are directly observed. Compared with the conventional composite film electrodes, the single particle measurements using the microelectrode gave more detailed, true information about the hydrogen storage alloy.

  • Total pressure recovery ratio in intake is crucial factor to the operational characteristics of supersonic propulsion system because it does not compress inlet air mechanically by compressor, but does compress inlet air by ram compression. As the result of that the dynamic characteristic analysis of engine was performed before the controller was designed, it could be ascertained when the AoA of flight vehicle increases, the buzz margin decreases so that the shock wave produced outside intake in the specified area according to flight operation's characteristics. Therefore the PID control algorithm was designed to be controlled buzz margin that the characteristic of shock wave could meet the requirement of performance in intake. The PID controller was designed that the buzz margin value is being positive number using the control variables; fuel flow and nozzle throat area.

  • Micro gas turbine engine is well known as a power plant of unmanned aerial vehicle and a small scale emergency generation system and also, it is significant as initial research of large gas turbine and educational purpose of gas turbine. Many sort of Micro gas turbine test set for education is produced by several manufacturers, but all of the engine control system of them is separated with data acquisition system; moreover, the engine control algorithms are inaccessible and related variables could not be collected. In this investigation, the Integrated Modifiable Test Rig which has modifiable engine start-up, drive and situational control logics is developed by LabVIEW with I/O devices and it provides wide experimental applicability to studies of dynamic characteristics of fuel system and combustion instability.

  • The effect of an increase in the temperature of inlet air on the performance of a membrane humidifier for a PEMFC (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell) vehicle was investigated both experimentally and numerically. A shell-and-tube type gas-to-gas humidifier with Nafion membrane was tested. The experimental result showed that water transfer varies nonlinearly with the temperature elevation. Numerical analysis based on detailed modeling was also conducted in simplified geometry of a single tube to explain this nonlinear behavior. The simulation revealed that the local water flux varies nonlinearly and dramatically along the tube. The analysis was based on the inverse relationship between the increase in temperature and decrease in relative humidity, both of which seriously affect the water conductivity of the membrane.

  • The variable-swash-plate compressor has recently been adopted as a vehicle compressor to improve fuel efficiency. The rotation torque in the variable-swash-plate compressor and the pressure-affected piston have a great influence on the swash-plate design and deformation. This paper suggests the optimal configuration design by using Chebyshev orthogonal polynomial and optimization techniques. The orthogonal array (OA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques and response surface optimization, are employed to determine the main effects and their optimal design variables. According to the optimal design, we confirm an effective design variable in swash plate and explain the optimal solution, the usefulness for satisfying the constraints of maximum stress and deformation.

Genotoxicity of Aluminum Oxide ($Al_2O_3$) Nanoparticle in Mammalian Cell Lines

  • Nanoparticles are small-scale substances (<100 nm) with unique properties, complex exposure and health risk implications. Aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) nanoparticles (NP) have been widely used as abrasives, wear-resistant coatings on propeller shafts of ships, to increase the specific impulse per weight of composite propellants used in solid rocket fuel and as drug delivery systems to increase solubility. However, recent studies have shown that nano-sized aluminum (10 nm in diameter) can generate adverse effects, such as pulmonary response. The cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of $Al_2O_3$ NP were investigated using the dye exclusion assay, the comet assay, and the mouse lymphoma thymidine kinase (tk$^{+/-}$) gene mutation assay (MLA). IC$_{20}$ values of $Al_2O_3$ NP in BEAS-2B cells were determined the concentration of 273.44 $\mu$g/mL and 390.63 $\mu$g/mL with and without S-9. However IC$_{20}$ values of $Al_2O_3$ NP were found nontoxic in L5178Y cells both of with and without S-9 fraction. In the comet assay, L5178Y cells and BEAS-2B cells were treated with $Al_2O_3$ NP which significantly increased 2-fold tail moment with and without S-9. Also, the mutant frequencies in the $Al_2O_3$ NP treated L5178Y cells were increased compared to the vehicle controls with S-9. The results of this study indicate that $Al_2O_3$ NP can cause primary DNA damage and cytotoxicity but not mutagenicity in cultured mammalian cells.

  • This paper presents the development and validation of a wheel loader simulation model. The objective of doing so is to evaluate the performance of the wheel loader and improve its overall performance using Matlab/Simulink. The wheel loader simulation model consists of 4 parts: mechanical/hydraulic powertrain model and vehicle/working dynamic model. An integrated simulation model is required to evaluate and improve the performance of the wheel loader. It is expected that this model will be applied to fuel economizing, improving the pace of operation by using the hybrid system, and the intelligent wheel loader. The performance of the proposed simulation model has been validated by using Matlab/Simulink to compare the driving and the working experimental data.
