A real time multibody vehicle dynamics model has been developed and implemented using a subsystem synthesis method based on recursive formulation. To verify real time simulation capability the developed model has been applied to HMMWV(High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) with steering system. For the kinematically driven steering system, the coupled front suspension-steering subsystem can be decoupled into two SLA suspension subsystems, which improves the efficiency of simulation. To investigate theoretical efficiency, operational counting method has been also employed to compare the proposed model with the conventional recursive dynamics model. Various simulations such as unsymmetric bump run, step steering(J-turn) and sine steering input test have been carried out to verify the real time feasibility of the proposed model.
This paper concerns about an experimental investigation about steering performance of tracked vehicle on extremely soft soil based on DOE(Design Of Experiment) using L8 orthogonal Array. A tracked vehicle model with principal dimensions of $0.9m{\times}0.8m{\times}0.4m$ and weight 167kg was constructed with a pair of driving chain links driven by two AC-servo motors. The tracks are configured with detachable grousers, the span of which can be varied. Deep seabed was simulated by means of bentonite-water mixture in a soil bin of $6.0m{\times}3.7m{\times}0.7m$. Turning radii of vehicle and torques of motors were measured with respect to experimental variables; steering ratio, driving speed, grouser chevron angle, grouser span, grouser height. The effects of experiment variables on steering performance are evaluated.

A method for automatically driving paddy vehicles, such as rice transplanters, etc., straight ahead in a paddy field was investigated . The direction of such vehicles must be precisely controlled to do the operations as straight. However, the alignment of the from wheels becomes distorted due to the unevenness of the ground, preventing the vehicle form going straight. If the proper alignment of the front wheels is maintained , the vehicle can be driven straight ahead greater precision. To investigate the influence of the ground uneveness, the behavior of a paddy vehicle running over an obstacle was quantified. The left wheel ran over an obstacle on a flat concrete road surfaced. When the steering wheel was free, the front wheels were forced toward the left when vehicle went up the obstacle and toward the right when the vehicle went down it. The torsion of the wheel when the vehicle went down the obstacle was larger than that when it went up ,so it turned right 5 degrees. Sinc hydraulic control steering decreased the steering angle , it turned right 3 degrees. These results suggest that a vehicle can be driven straight ahead with high precision when the steering angle is changed in response to the direction and inclination of the vehicle . Such results were obtained in a paddy field tests.
The previous paper described the logic tuning, the vehicle manufacture and the evaluation in the HILS system for the purpose of the development of a Steer-By-Wire(SBW) system. This paper describes the content of applying to a new HILS system, the vehicle manufacture and the result of the evaluation performed in Independent-type SBW(I-SBW) system. Here, the SBW indicates the method of steering both tires by using one motor as the steering gear actuator, similar to the conventional steering system. On the other hand, the I-SBW means the method of steering both front tires independently by using dual motors as the steering gear actuator. As a result, the layout and the kinematical mechanism of the I-SBW system are quite different from those of the typical steering mechanism. Nevertheless, there is no change in the steering column motor system. In the report, we first describe the structure and control logic of the I-SBW system, and then the control effect on this system as applied for both the HILS system and a vehicle. Furthermore, our HILS system involves the actuator mechanism which realizes the reaction force of the road surface with a minimized frictional force in operation. Therefore, it is possible for us to tune the control logic via the HILS system and confirm the effect of the tuned control logic by applying it to a vehicle with the I-SBW system.
AMachine vision is a promising tool for the autonomous guidance of farm machinery. Conventional CCD camera for the machine vision needs a desktop PC to install a frame grabber, however, a web camera is ready to use when plugged in the USB port. A web camera with a notebook PC can replace existing camera system. Autonomous steering control system of this research was intended to be used for combine harvester. If the web camera can recognize cut/uncut edge of crop, which will be the reference for steering control, then the position of the machine can be determined in terms of lateral offset and heading angle. In this research, a white line was used as a cut/uncut edge of crop for steering control. Image processing algorithm including capturing image in the web camera was developed to determine the desired travel path. An experimental vehicle was constructed to evaluate the system performance. Since the vehicle adopted differential drive steering mechanism, it is steered by the difference of rotation speed between left and right wheels. According to the position of vehicle, the steering algorithm was developed as well. Evaluation tests showed that the experimental vehicle could travel within an RMS error of 0.8cm along the desired path at the ground speed of $9\sim41cm/s$. Even when the vehicle started with initial offsets or tilted heading angle, it could move quickly to track the desired path after traveling $1.52\sim3.5m$. For turning section, i.e., the curved path with curvature of 3 m, the vehicle completed its turning securely.
The bi-modal vehicle is composed of two car-bodies and three axles. Each axle of the vehicle has an independent suspension and all wheels are steerable. Since the bi-modal vehicle has longer wheelbase than most urban buses, the All-Wheel-Steering(AWS) system is adapted for to ensure safe driving and proper turning radius on a curved road. This paper proposes an AWS control algorithm for stable driving of bi-modal vehicle. Steering angles and directions of each axle of bi-modal vehicle changed according to the driving environment and steering modes. In the case that front and rear axles should be steered in opposite directions is a negative mode, and the other case that the axles should be steered in the same direction is a positive mode. For example, in the positive mode, front and real axles are steered in the same direction, while in the negative mode, they are steered in the opposite direction. A multibody model of the vehicle is used to verify the performance of the steering algorithm and simulation results of 2WS are compared with those of AWS under the same condition.
In this paper the reference model following control(RMFC) scheme through the optimal control theory is investigated for the independent rear wheel steering(IRWS) vehicle. RMFC vehicle follows the dynamic performance of a virtual vehicle as a reference model deisgned in the controller. Linear vehicle model of two degres-of-freedom is used to derive control scheme which is applied to full vehicle for evaluating handling performances. And 4WS vehicle through RMFC is compared to the conventional 2WS vehicle and 4WS vehicle in the J-turn test. The RMFC logic is also extended to IRWS vehicle, IRWS with RMFC shows not only the excellent handling performance but salso some advantages in terms of the directional stability and responsiveness from the simulation results.
On a conventional rail vehicle, passive primary suspensions stabilize wheelsets in the longitudinal and yaw direction. However, these suspensions reduce the natural curving ability due to the profile of the wheels. Stabilizing and steering of the wheelsets generate the conflict problems in design process. Therefore, most systems are designed to guarantee the stability in spite of decreased curving performance. As a result, severe wear of the wheels and rails occur on tight curves and squeal noise on curving is high. Active steering has been proposed to satisfy stabilizing and steering performance simultaneously. This paper describes the possibility investigation about the application of the active steering bogie for a urban railway vehicle. Vehicles run on an amount of tight curves at mid or low speed in urban railways. Thus, it is important to reduce the wear and squeal noise between wheels and rails. Simulations show that active steering can be reduce the wear and squeal noise significantly compared to conventional systems.
In this paper, we present model predictive control (MPC) applied to lane keeping system (LKS) based on a vision module. Due to a slow sampling rate of the vision system, the conventional LKS using single rate control may result in uncomfortable steering control rate in a high vehicle speed. By applying MPC using multi-rate Kalman filter to active steering control, the proposed MPC-based active steering control system prevents undesirable saturated steering control command. The effectiveness of the MPC is validated by simulations for the LKS equipped with a camera module having a slow sampling rate on the curved lane with the minimum radius of 250[m] at a vehicle speed of 30[m/s].
