This article deals with the analysis of a coupling between stationary Maxwell's equations, the transient state Navier-Stokes and thermal equations. The resolution of these equations is obtained by introducing the magnetic vector potential A, the vorticity ${\xi}$, the stream function ${\psi}$ and the temperature T. The flux density, the electromagnetic thrust, the electric power density, the velocity, the pressure and the temperature are graphically visualized. Also, the influence of the frequency is presented.

A parallel algorithm of bi-conjugate gradient method was developed based on CUDA for parallel computation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The governing equations were discretized using splitting P2P1 finite element method. Asymmetric stenotic flow problem was solved to validate the proposed algorithm, and then the parallel performance of the GPU was examined by measuring the elapsed times. Further, the GPU performance for sparse matrix-vector multiplication was also investigated with a matrix of fluid-structure interaction problem. A kernel was generated to simultaneously compute the inner product of each row of sparse matrix and a vector. In addition, the kernel was optimized to improve the performance by using both parallel reduction and memory coalescing. In the kernel construction, the effect of warp on the parallel performance of the present CUDA was also examined. The present GPU computation was more than 7 times faster than the single CPU by double precision.

This paper presents an algorithm for structural reliability with the response surface method. For this aim, an approach with three stages is proposed named as improved response surface method. In the algorithm, firstly, a quadratic approximate function is formed and design point is determined with First Order Reliability Method. Secondly, a point close to the exact limit state function is searched using the design point. Lastly, vector projected method is used to generate the sample points and Second Order Reliability Method is performed to obtain reliability index and probability of failure. Five numerical examples are selected to illustrate the proposed algorithm. The limit state functions of three examples (cantilever beam, highly nonlinear limit state function and dynamic response of an oscillator) are defined explicitly and the others (frame and truss structures) are defined implicitly. ANSYS finite element program is utilized to obtain the response of the structures which are needed in the reliability analysis of implicit limit state functions. The results (reliability index, probability of failure and limit state function evaluations) obtained from the improved response surface are compared with those of Monte Carlo Simulation, First Order Reliability Method, Second Order Reliability Method and Classical Response Surface Method. According to the results, proposed algorithm gives better results for both reliability index and limit state function evaluations.
This paper describes a recent development on the divergence free basis function based on a hermite stream function and verifies its validity by comparing results with those from a modified residual method known as one of stabilized finite element methods. It can be shown that a proper choice of degrees of freedom at a node with a proper arrangement of the hermite interpolation functions can yield solenoidal or divergent free interpolation functions for the velocities. The well-known cavity problem has been chosen for validity of the present algorithm. The comparisons from numerical results between the present and the modified residual showed the present method yields better results in both the velocity and the pressure within modest Reynolds numbers(Re = 1,000).
In order to estimate space charging process in the corona charging apparatus which has been used to make polymer electret cell, the electrical properties of 30[${\mu}m$] thick polypropylene film were obtained from TSC measurement after corona charging between copper knife electrode and aluminum cylinder electrode with the voltage of -8, -7, -6, -5 (kV). And, the electrostatic contour and the electric field vector were calculated using Finite Element Method with the electrical properties obtained from TSC spectra analysis. The edge effect around the edge of knife electrode affects electrostatic contour on the surface of specimen and the electric field concentration inside the polymer. As a result the uneven charging state in the electret cell due to the mistake of design was calculated, and the optimal design of corona charging apparatus opprobriate to various specimen was come to be practicable.
Finite element model is established for the simulation of groundwater flow due to water curtain around underground oil storage Choleski decomposition method. The symmetric global conductance matrix is solved by vector storage Choleski decomposition method. The model is verified through comparison with the results of electric analogy. For the application of this model to real site, the finite element meshes are constructed according to representative vertical cross and longitudinal sections. In cross-sectional analysis, potential and flow distributions are compared based on the cavern pressure and horizontal water curtain. For longitudinal section, effects between nearly located caverns with or without vertical water curtain are analyzed. These results prove that the established model can be used as a tool for flow analysis around underground caverns.
The hybrid method using the extended finite element method (XFEM) and the forward Euler approach is widely employed to predict the fatigue life of plate structures. Due to the accuracy of the forward Euler approach is determined by a small step size, the performance of fatigue life prediction of the hybrid method is not agreeable. Instead the forward Euler approach, a prediction method using midpoint method and support vector regression (SVR) is presented to evaluate the stress intensity factors (SIFs) and the fatigue life. Firstly, the XFEM is employed to calculate the SIFs with given crack sizes. Then use the history of SIFs as a function of either number of fatigue life cycles or crack sizes within the current cycle to build a prediction model. Finally, according to the prediction model predict the SIFs at different crack sizes or different cycles. Three numerical cases composed by a homogeneous plate with edge crack, a composite plate with edge crack and center crack are introduced to verify the performance of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method enables large step sizes without sacrificing accuracy. The method is expected to predict the fatigue life of complex structures.

Finite element analysis of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out in two and tree dimensions. The new VOF-based numerical algorithm that has been proposed by the present authors was applied to several 2-D and 3-D free surface flow problems. The proposed free surface tracking scheme is based on two numerical tools that have been newly introduced by the present authots; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed numerical algorithm has been applied to 2-D and 3-D cavity filling and sloshing problems, which demonstrated versatility and effectiveness of the new free surface tracking scheme as well as the overall solution procedure. The proposed numerical algorithm resolved successfully the interacting free surface with each other. The simulated results demonstrated the applicability of proposed numerical algorithm to the practical problems of large free surface motion. Also, it has been demonstrated that the proposed free surface tracking scheme can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems and can be extended to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts.

Three-dimensional (3-D) electromagnetic (EM) modeling algorithm has been developed using finite element method (FEM) to acquire more efficient interpretation techniques of EM data. When FEM based on nodal elements is applied to EM problem, spurious solutions, so called 'vector parasite', are occurred due to the discontinuity of normal electric fields and may lead the completely erroneous results. Among the methods curing the spurious problem, this study adopts vector element of which basis function has the amplitude and direction. To reduce computational cost and required core memory, complex bi-conjugate gradient (CBCG) method is applied to solving complex symmetric matrix of FEM and point Jacobi method is used to accelerate convergence rate. To verify the developed 3-D EM modeling algorithm, its electric and magnetic field for a layered-earth model are compared with those of layered-earth solution. As we expected, the vector based FEM developed in this study does not cause ny vector parasite problem, while conventional nodal based FEM causes lots of errors due to the discontinuity of field variables. For testing the applicability to high frequencies 100 MHz is used as an operating frequency for the layer structure. Modeled fields calculated from developed code are also well matched with the layered-earth ones for a model with dielectric anomaly as well as conductive anomaly. In a vertical electric dipole source case, however, the discontinuity of field variables causes the conventional nodal based FEM to include a lot of errors due to the vector parasite. Even for the case, the vector based FEM gave almost the same results as the layered-earth solution. The magnetic fields induced by a dielectric anomaly at high frequencies show unique behaviors different from those by a conductive anomaly. Since our 3-D EM modeling code can reflect the effect from a dielectric anomaly as well as a conductive anomaly, it may be a groundwork not only to apply high frequency EM method to the field survey but also to analyze the fold data obtained by high frequency EM method.
This paper proposes a one-dimensional fiber beam element model taking account of materially non-linear behavior, benefiting the highly efficient elastic-plastic analysis of girders with shear-lag effects. Based on the displacement-based fiber beam-column element, two additional degrees of freedom (DOFs) are added into the proposed model to consider the shear-lag warping deformations of the slabs. The new finite element (FE) formulations of the tangent stiffness matrix and resisting force vector are deduced with the variational principle of the minimum potential energy. Then the proposed element is implemented in the OpenSees computational framework as a newly developed element, and the full Newton iteration method is adopted for an iterative solution. The typical materially non-linear behaviors, including the cracking and crushing of concrete, as well as the plasticity of the reinforcement and steel girder, are all considered in the model. The proposed model is applied to several test cases under elastic or plastic loading states and compared with the solutions of theoretical models, tests, and shell/solid refined FE models. The results of these comparisons indicate the accuracy and applicability of the proposed model for the analysis of both concrete box girders and steel-concrete composite girders, under either elastic or plastic states.
