  • The reflection coefficients of monochromatic water waves over various shear currents flowing on a constant topography are estimated analytically in this study. The region of varying shear currents is represented by a finite number of tiny steps with a uniform depth topography. The proper numbers of steps and evanescent modes needed for the analysis are proposed by a series of convergence tests. The characteristics of reflection coefficients for various shear currents conditions are also examined.

  • A new technique is proposed for the determination of alkylphenols, chlorophenols and bisphenol A in tap water. The sample preparation consists of a solid phase extraction (SPE) of alkylphenols, chlorophenols and bisphenol A from a water sample with XAD-4 and subsequent conversion to isobutyloxycarbonyl (isoBOC) derivatives or tert.-butyldimethylsilyl (TBDMS) derivatives for sensitive analysis with the GC/MS-SIM mode. The recoveries were 86.6∼105.2 % (isoBOC derivatization) and 97.6∼484.5 % (TBDMS derivatization), respectively. The limit of quantitation of alkylphenols, chlorophenols and bisphenol A for SIM were 0.001∼0.050 $\mu\textrm{g}$/l (isoBOC derivatization) and 0.003∼0.050 $\mu\textrm{g}$/l (TBDMS derivatization). The SIM responses were linear with the correlation coefficient varying 0.9755∼0.9981 (isoBOC derivatization), and 0.9908∼0.9996 (TBDMS derivatization). The derivative methods and their application to tap water samples will be disscussed.

  • In this paper a self-tuning modified skyhook control for the semi-active suspension systems is investigated. The damping force generation mechanism is modeled We consider a 2 DOF time-varying quarter car model that permits parameter variations of the sprung mass and suspension spring coefficient. The modified skyhook control algorithm proposed in this paper requires only the measurement of body acceleration. The absolute velocity of the sprung mass and the relative velocity of the suspension deflection are estimated by using integral filters, according to parameter variations. The skyhook gains are designed in such a way that the body acceleration and the dynamic tire force are optimized. An ECU prototype will be discussed

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine sound absorption characteristics of sintered Al(aluminum) plate. Comparison between experiment and theoretical analysts by using empirical formula are made. Based on comparison. it is found that Voronina model gives more reasonable explanation for sound absorption characteristics of sintered Al plates. Effect of air gap with varying the thickness of plates are also investigated, which concludes that the air gap generally increase absorption but for too thick thickness of Al plates. Al plates with air gap shows 0.85∼0.9 of NRC(Noise Reduction Coefficient) measured in reverberation room. which is comparable to glass wool. Comparison between normal and random Incident absorption shows that random incident absorption is higher than normal incident absorption.

  • Based on the transient finite difference solution of Richards' equation, an infiltration model is developed to analyze temporal variation of precipitation recharge in the region of monsoon climates. Simulation results obtained by using time series data of 20-year daily precipitation and pan evaporation indicate that a linear relationship between the annual precipitation and the annual recharge holds for the soils under the monsoon climates with varying degrees of the correlation coefficient depending on the soil types. A sensitivity analysis reveals that the water table depth has little effects on the recharge for the sandy soil, whereas, for the loamy and silty soils, rise of the water table at shallow depths causes increase of evaporation by approximately 100㎜/yr and a corresponding decrease in recharge. A series of simulations for two-layered soils illustrate that the amount of recharge is dominantly determined by the soil properties of the upper layer, although the temporal variation of recharge is affected by both layers.

  • In this study, the process parameters in powder compaction are optimized for getting high relative densities. To find optimized parameters, the analytic models of powder compaction are firstly prepared by 2-dimensional rod arrays with random green densities using a quasi-random multi-particle array. Then, using finite element method, the changes in relative densities are analyzed by varying the size of the particle, the amplitude of cyclic compaction, and the coefficient of friction, which influence the relative density in cyclic compactions. After the analytic function of relative density associated process parameters are formulated by aid of the response surface method, the optimal conditions in powder compaction process are found by the grid search method.

  • In the hot press forming process (HPF), a martensitic structure is obtained by controlling the cooling rate when cooling a boron sheet that is heated up to over $900^{\circ}C$. The HPF process has various advantages such as the improvement in formability and material properties and minimal spring back of the deformed materials. The factors related to the cooling rate depend on the heat transfer characteristics between heated materials and dies. Therefore, in this study, the cooling rate is controlled by adjusting the heat transfer coefficient of the material at the pressing process. And, the mechanical properties and microstructure of the deformed material is demonstrated during the HPF process where cold dies are used to form the heated steel plate. This is achieved by varying the major forming conditions that control the cooling rate regarded as the most important process parameter.

  • An approach of decomposing the reflecting components is proposed by using the mild-slope equation of hyperbolic type which has the similar form to the shallow water equations. The approach is verified on Booij's problem and sinusoidally varying ripples. Inclusion of higher-order bottom effect given by chamberlain and Porter(1995) yields even more satisfactory results than the Berkhoff's mild-slope equation when compared with finite element solution or experiments.

  • The thermal stresses induced by difference in Coefficient of Thermal Expansion between FR-4 board and 63Sn-37Pb solder joint directly affect the reliability of 63Sn-37Pb solder joint. This research, thus, focuses to investigate the crack initiation and propagation behavior around solder joint by imposing a designed Acceleration Life Test Procedure on solder joint by using a newly manufactured Thermal Impact Experimental Apparatus. The fracture mechanism of the solder joint was found to be highly influenced by thermal stresses. The reliability of solder joint was evaluated by using a failure probability model in terms of varying parameters such as frequency and temperature. The relationship between failure probability and safety factor was also studied.

  • In this study, a rotor blade of a Curtis turbine is investigated. Bezier curve is generally used to define the profile of turbine blades. However, this curve gives a feature of global control, which is not proper to a supersonic impulse turbine blade. Thus, a blade design method is developed by using B-spline curve so that local control is possible to obtain an optimized blade section. To design a Curtis turbine blade section systematically, the blade section has been changed by varying three design parameters using central composite design method. Flow analyses have been carried out for the blade sections, and the effects of design parameters are evaluated.
