  • The unstable characteristic values of communication signals along with the varying SNR (Signal Noise Ratio) environment make it difficult to identify the modulations of signals. Most of relevant literature revolves around signal recognition under stable SNR, and not applicable for signal recognition at varying SNR. To solve the problem, this research developed a novel communication signal recognition algorithm based on Holder coefficient and cloud theory. In this algorithm, the two-dimensional (2D) Holder coefficient characteristics of communication signals were firstly calculated, and then according to the distribution characteristics of Holder coefficient under varying SNR environment, the digital characteristics of cloud model such as expectation, entropy, and hyper entropy are calculated to constitute the three-dimensional (3D) digital cloud characteristics of Holder coefficient value, which aims to improve the recognition rate of the communication signals. Compared with traditional algorithms, the developed algorithm can describe the signals' features more accurately under varying SNR environment. The results from the numerical simulation show that the developed 3D feature extraction algorithm based on Holder coefficient cloud features performs better anti-noise ability, and the classifier based on interval gray relation theory can achieve a recognition rate up to 84.0%, even when the SNR varies from -17dB to -12dB.

  • Adaptive modulation(AM) is an important technique to increase the system efficiency, in which transmitter selects the most suitable modulation mode adaptively according to channel state in the temporary and spatially varying communication environment. Fixed modulation on channels with varying signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) is that the bit-errorrate(BER) probability performance is changing with the channel quality. An adaptive modulation scheme can be designed to have a BER which is constant for all channel SNRs. The correct as well as fast and simple SNR estimation is required essentially for this adaptive modulation. In order to operate adaptive modulation system effectively, in this paper, we analyze the effect of SNR estimation performance to it through the average BER and data throughput. Applying SNR estimation based on auto-correlation of decision feedback signal and others to adaptive modulation system, we also confirm performance degradation or improvement of its which is decided by SNR estimation error at each transition point of modulation level. Since SNR estimation based on auto-correlation of decision feedback signal shows stable estimation performance for various quadrature amplitude modulation(QAM) comparatively, this can be reduced degradation than others at each transition point of modulation level.

  • In the channel-varying environment, it is very important to estimate the signal to noise ratio(SNR) of received signal and to transmit the signal effectively for the modern communication system. The performance of existing non-data-aided (NDA) SNR estimation methods are substantially degraded for high level modulation scheme such as M-ary APSK or QAM. In this paper, we propose a SNR estimation method which uses zero point auto-correlation of received signal per block and auto-/cross- correlation of decision feedback signal in OFDM system. Proposed method can be studied into two Types; Type 1 can estimate SNR by zero point auto-correlation of decision feedback signal based on the second moment property. Type 2 uses both zero point auto-correlation and cross-correlation based on the fourth moment property. In block-by-block reception of OFDM system, these two SNR estimation methods can be possible for the practical implementation due to correlation based the estimation method and they show more stable estimation performance than the previous SNR estimation methods. Also, we mathematically derive the SNR estimation expression according to computational difference of auto-/cross-correlation. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are used to verify the proposed method.

  • In this paper, a new time delay estimation algorithm, WTD-LMSTDE was proposed. This method has great improvement in convergence rate relative to the time domain approach by decreasing the eigen value spread of input signal autocorrelation matrix. The performance of the algorithm was evaluated for the cases of time invariant time delay and time varying time delay. In the case of time invariant time delay, the estimation accuracy of WTD-LMSTDE was better than that of LMSTDE from 3.3% to 12.5% with respect to SNR. In the case of time varying time delay, the mean error power of WTD-LMSTDE in linear increased delay environment was decreased about 2.4dB compared to that of LMSTDE under noise-free condition. As a result, we showed that the performance of WTD-LMSTDE is better than of LMSTDE.

  • This article investigates the problem of opportunistic spectrum access in dynamic environment, in which the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is time-varying. Different from existing work on continuous feedback, we consider more practical scenarios in which the transmitter receives an Acknowledgment (ACK) if the received SNR is larger than the required threshold, and otherwise a Non-Acknowledgment (NACK). That is, the feedback is discrete. Several applications with different threshold values are also considered in this work. The channel selection problem is formulated as a non-cooperative game, and subsequently it is proved to be a potential game, which has at least one pure strategy Nash equilibrium. Following this, a multi-agent Q-learning algorithm is proposed to converge to Nash equilibria of the game. Furthermore, opportunistic spectrum access with multiple discrete feedbacks is also investigated. Finally, the simulation results verify that the proposed multi-agent Q-learning algorithm is applicable to both situations with binary feedback and multiple discrete feedbacks.

  • In the speech recognition under the noisy environments, reducing the mismatch introduced between training and testing environments is an important issue. Spectral subtraction is widely used technique because of its simplicity and relatively good performance in noisy environments. In this paper, we introduce histogram method as a reliable noise estimation approach for spectral subtraction. This method has advantages over the conventional noise estimation methods in that it does not need to detect non-speech intervals and it can estimate the noise spectra even in time-varying noise environments. Even though spectral subtraction is performed using a reliable average noise spectrum by the histogram method, considerable amount of residual noise remains due to the variations of instantaneous noise spectrum about mean. To overcome this limitation, we propose a new over-estimation technique based on distribution characteristics of histogram used for noise estimation. Since the proposed technique decides the degree of over-estimation adaptively according to the measured noise distribution, it has advantages to be few the influence of the SNR variation on the noise levels. According to speaker-independent isolated word recognition experiments in car noise environment under various SNR conditions, the proposed histogram-based over-estimation technique outperforms the conventional over-estimation technique.

  • Chirp spread spectrum method using both time and frequency component is fit to time varying channel such as powerline channel. The used chirp symbol based on the CEBus standard is the unit symbol which sweeps from 100kHz to 380kHz over a 25㎲. To evaluate the performance of between Chirp-SS and DSSS, we measured the bit error rate under Gaussian channel. Simulation result is shown that Chirp-SS has a about 3[dB] gain of SNR than DSSS. To verify the performance of implemented modem, it is made up the powerline channel environment. After adding several noises to it, we examined the receiving status of modem. The implemented modem is able to receive the signal over the powerline channel with having several noises and capacitive loads.

  • In this paper, we represent Nakagami-m fading channel as finite-State Markov Channel (FSMC) and analyze the performance of wireless communication system with varying the fading channel condition. In FSMC model, the received signal's SNR is divided into finite intervals and these intervals are formed into Markov chain states. Each state is modeled by a BSC and the transition probability is dependent upon the physical characterization of the channel. The steady state probability and average symbol error rate of each state and transition probability are derived by numerical analysis and FSMC model is formed with these values. We found that various fading channels can be represented with FSMC by changing state transition index. In fast fading environment in which state transition index is large, the channel can be viewed as i.i.d. channel and on the contrary, in slow fading channel where state transition index is small, the channel can be represented by simple FSMC model in which transitions occur between just adjacent states. And we applied the proposed FSMC model to analyze the coding gain of random error correcting code on various fading channels via computer simulation.

  • High spectral efficiency can be obtained by adaptive modulation in which the modulation scheme is changed according to the channel environment. Thus it is especially suitable to mobile channel which is a typical example of time-varying channel. It is required to determine the optimum thresholds of signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) to change the modulation scheme effectively according to mobile speeds. Thus the optimum thresholds for specific mobile speeds to get the required bit error rate(BER) of $10^{-6}$ are obtained with the powerful turbo code in this paper. In addition, the optimum thresholds for the continuous mobile speed are proposed by interpolation of the obtained results. And the error performance and average spectral efficiency are investigated at various mobile speeds and channel environments.

  • This paper focuses on the accurate performance evaluation of cooperative diversity technique with imperfect channel estimates. The channel environment for simulations and performance evaluation is supposed to be the slowly time-varying Rayleigh fading channel. The framework of the performance evaluation is based on the Moment Generating Function(MGF) approach. To apply the effect of this channel estimation error into the performance evaluation, we import an useful Gaussian approximation in formulating the effective noise component and the additive noise. The average BER performance of cooperative diversity with M-PSK and M-QAM is computed as a function of the ratio of the signal to the effective noise based on the approximation. The verification of computed performance is provided with simulations. The evaluated performance matches up to simulation results even in a low SNR region.
