A Study on the Emulsifying Stability of W/O Type Sunscreen Cream by the Hansen Solubility Parameter (Hansen Solubility Parameter 를 통한 W/O 형 자외선차단 제형의 유화 안정성에 관한 연구)

  • The water resistance is important factor for sunscreen formulations. Generally a sunscreen cream was formulated by a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion. In the W/O emulsion system, silicone oils are added to improve the texture of formulations. Silicone oils have low compatibility with organic sunscreen agent, causing problems with the stability in emulsion. In this study, the compatibility between various oils in the W/O emulsion was derived numerically using Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) at first. HSP is represented a dispersion degree, a polarity, and a hydrgen bond in a composition. In this study, various emulsions were prepared according to the types of oils with different HSP values and then monitored by a viscosity and morphology according to the time and temperature. The HSP values of components and the experimental results have similar activities for the stability of emulsions. HSP made it easy to select oil with high compatibility. When the compatibility of the oil phase in the W/O emulsion was high, the viscosity change over time was small. The stability was improved under the freeze-thaw cycle (-15 ℃ ~ 45 ℃). In the future, if the composition of the ingredients is optimized through HSP, it is expected that it will be helpful in the development of W/O type sunscreen formulations that are excellent in use and stability.

Effects of the Feeding Mixed Oils of the Butter, Sardine and Safflower Oils on Fatty Acid Metabolism of Serum and Liver in Rats (버터, 정어리유 및 홍화유를 혼합 급이한 흰쥐의 혈청 및 간장의 지방산 대사에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was designed to observe the effects of the feeding mixed oils of the sardine oil containing n-3 EPA(eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and the safflower oil in which were plenty of n-6 linoleic acid, on the fatty acid metabolism of serum and liver in the dietary hyperlipidemic rats. Experimental oils mixed with 16% butter(control group), 8% butter + 8% olive oil and 8% butter with various level of sardine and safflower oils were administered to the male rats of the Sprague Dawley for 4 weeks. In the fatty acid compositions of serum phospholipid, triglyceride and cholesteryl ester, according as the contents of mixed safflower oil increased, n-3 PUFA(polyunsaturated fatty acid) contents and ratio of EPA/AA(arachidonic acid) tended to be decreased, but n-6 PUFA contents and ratio of AA/PUFA tended to be increased. In the fatty acid composition of triglyceride component in liver lipid, DHA contents were most in the liver lipid. And components of cholesteryl ester, n-6 linoleic acid contents were high percentage. Fatty acid compositions of serum and liver lipids were influenced from the fatty acid composition of the test lipids.

Determination of fluorine in Krill oils by combustion-ion chromatography (연소-이온크로마토그래프를 이용한 크릴오일 중 불소 시험법)

  • A fluorine content analysis method for krill oils, which is a representative oil formulation in foods, was developed in compliance with the Korea Food and Drug Ministry's "Guidelines for Validation of Testing Methods Related to Food". Using this method for krill oils, the presence of impurities was evaluated via combustion-ion chromatography (C-IC). A review of published technical data on fluorine in krill oils showed that while the traditional wet potentiometric method was typically used, it was not reliable. Moreover, there was no food testing/analysis laboratory in Korea to perform a fluorine test analysis on such an oil matrix. Therefore, we identified halogen (fluorine) tests, developed to national and international standards, and developed a test method suitable for krill oils by selecting a C-IC method that is sufficiently applicable to the oil matrix. Based on the characteristics of the oil matrix, the optimal test method was established through various experiments by reviewing the concerns related to loss and interference in the preparation and introduction of samples. The fluorine content test was carried out on 11 krill oil products that were purchased online. Most products (with the exception of only one) were found to contain less than the reporting limit obtained by the test method. Furthermore, after additional testing, a high fluorine content of approximately 2,000 ~ 3,000 mg/kg was detected on the krill surface, although the concentration varied depending on the area of the krill. A comparison with samples from two ISO/IEC 17025 testing laboratories confirmed that there was no significant difference in the statistical analysis results obtained by ANOVA among the three laboratories. A testing guide for fluorine content analysis was completed.

Physicochemical Properties of Frying Ginseng and Oils Derived from Deep-frying Ginseng (수삼튀김 시 튀김유 종류에 따른 수삼 및 유지의 이화학 특성)

  • To increase the consumption of frying ginseng, we investigated the physicochemical properties of frying ginseng and different edible oils processed through frying ginseng: soybean oil (SO), corn oil (CO), olive oil (OO), and grape seed oil (GO). We tested various parameters, including temperature (130, 160, 180, and $200^{\circ}C$), frying time (2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 min), and frying amount (up to 30 times). The physicochemical properties of the fried ginseng and oils were evaluated for changes in acid value, peroxide value, free fatty acid content, acrylamide formation, color, and viscosity of oils. The acid value and peroxide value of the oils increased with frying temperature and amount. Saturated fatty acids increased and unsaturated fatty acids decreased with the amount of frying, but oleic acid in CO and GO and linoleic acid in OO increased. The concentration of acrylamide in fried ginseng increased as the frying temperature and amount increased and was the lowest in OO. The lightness and redness of the frying oil color decreased and its yellowness increased in SO and CO, but the lightness increased (redness and yellowness decreased) in OO. In particular, CO was significantly browned with increasing frying amounts. The viscosity of the frying oils increased with frying amount, with CO showing the lowest increases in viscosity of the oils. As a result, the optimal ginseng frying condition found was 2 min 30 sec at $180^{\circ}C$, regardless the type of oils.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different skin care ingredient concentrations on the effect of polyols and oils on the human skin moisturization and skin surface roughness. Polyols and oils were essential ingredients to make a skin care formulation. But these were still not understood how much concentration(s) were tested on human skin in the aspect of efficacy and sensory. We studied to examine various concentrations of ingredient by cosmetic companies using noninvasive methods. Polyols were composed of glycerol and butylene glycol (BG) as 1:1 ratio, and oils were hydrogenated polydecene, cetyl ethylhexanoate and pentaerythrityl tetraethylhexanoate (PTO(R), Stearinerie Dubois Fils Co., France) as 1:1:1 ratio. All compounds were tested $0{\sim}27%dml$ Polyols and $0{\sim}35%dml$ oils in O/W emulsions. We investigated the effect of water contents and the effect of stratum corneum roughness in forearm skin after application of compounds. Water contents of the skin measured by skin capacitance and skin surface roughness measured visual scoring of skin surface biopsy through the scanning electron microscopy. Water contents of the skin were highly related to amount of polyols (to 20%) and oils (to 12%). Correlation coefficients were 0.971 and 0.985 respectively (p<0.01), 2 h after application. Skin surface roughness was positively correlated with polyol contents in concentration dependent manner, and depend on oils up to 6%. The ratio of coefficient was 2.5 to 1 (polyol to oils) by regression analysis. Further studies will be conducted with other ingredients such as surfactants, lipids and aqueous materials, and with ether methods for noninvasive measurement.

  • Coriander(Coriandrum sativum L.) belongs to the family Umbelliferae/Apiaceae. It is cultivated as a spice and medicinal herb around the world, including its leaves and seeds. Coriander leaves have soft and fragrant, so they can be used in cuisines such as China, Mexico, and, Southeast Asia. Coriander leaves contain a high amount of vitamin C, carotene, and multiple polyphenols. Coriander essential oils and extracts have various chemical components and are known to have antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. This study was carried out for resource discovery, propagation, and DB construction of aromatic plants. In order to evaluate the genetic characteristics, 30 kinds of Coriander seeds were supplied from the Center for Genetic Resources. The evaluation of characteristics of the basal part leaf number, leaf shape, and plant height was investigated. Also, Essential oils extract from various parts of plants including the leaves, flowers, and steam isolated by simultaneous distillation extraction(SDE) apparatus. In the results, heights showed growing to 70 cm over and basal part leaf number 0 to7. The leaves are variable, they are measured according to leaves incisions, and most of the included incision. The qualitative analysis of EOs was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. EOs had various chemical compositions. Major compounds were trans-2-Decenal, linalool, decanal, 2-Dodecenal, 13-Tetradecanal, 2-Undecenal.

  • Hypertension excessively affects national health is the basic disease that causes death and disablement after the middle-aged. Therefore, The detection and control of hypertension is essential to health care. In general, It is known that the systolic blood pressure should be below 140mmHg, the diastolic blood pressure should be below 90mmHg. Presently, the treatment of hypertension is mostly taking anti-hypertension drug, diet and stability. but Taking anti-hypertension drug has such side effects as depression. and that, We were making a study of various treatments of hypertension. In a course of hypertension study, We applied aromatherapy to the control of hypertension. Aromatherapy is the practice of using of volate plant oils including essential oils, for psychological and physical well-being. Essential oils are drawn into the body by the sense smell not only does the aroma of the true plant stimulate the brain to the trigger a positive effect, but supply physical benefits also. In Europe and North America, The study and development of aromatherapy is lively in progress. In the control of hypertension, We applied Lavender, Majoram, Ylang-Ylang to forty-two hypertensive patients. After aromatherapy for controlling hypertension. We measured the changes of the systolic blood pressure & the diastolic blood pressure of patients by time. As the result of above study, We identified the significance of blood pressure down by aromatherapy.

The Comparison of Main Volatile Components in the Flue-cured Tobacco Produced by Five Countries. (세계 5개국에서 생산된 황색종 잎담배의 주요 향기성분 비교)

  • The present study was carried out to compare the composition of major essential oil components in the flue-cured tobacco produced by Korea, America, China, Brazil and Zimbabwe. Above 100 essential oil components were separated by GC and major 18 components of them, known to be important contributors to flue-cured tobacco flavor and smoke taste, were identified by GC/MS. Neophytadiene was major in quantities in the oils mostly and its composition in flue-cured tobacco produced by Korea, America, Zimbabwe, Brazil, and Unnam and Yenji region of China was 26.82\%,\;25.17\%,\;26.50\%,\;16.92\%,\;and\;18.75\%\;and\;14.87\%$, respectively. Megastigmatrienone, one of the major tobacco carotenoid degradation products was contained above $10\%$ in the oils of flue-cured tobacco produced by Korea and America, but, it was comprised about $5.66\%$ to 8.00 in Brazil, Zimbabwe, and Unnam and Yenji region of China. Damascenone is important to the aroma of tobacco as a crotenoid degradation products. Its amount in the oils was $3.31\%\;in\;Brazil,\;3.13\%\;in\;America,\;2.57\%\;in\;Zimbabwe,\;2.54%$ in Yenji of China, $2.00\%$ in Korea and $1.85\%$ in Unnam of China. These results can furnish the basic information capable of evaluating the quality value of flue-cured tobacco produced by various nations.

Heavy Metal Contamination in Sediments by Herbei Sprit Oil Spill (허베이 스피리트 원유 유출 사고에 의한 퇴적물의 중금속 오염)

  • Since crude oil contains various pollutants including heavy metals, the environmental impact should be assessed for heavy metals as well as oil itself. In order to estimate the extent of heavy metal contamination, surface sediments were collected at the intertidal and coastal zone around the Herbei sprit oil spill area during December 2007 and January 2008. Organic carbon, sulfur and heavy metals were determined to assess heavy metal contamination in sediments. The crude oils contained C, S, V and Ni, but little toxic metals such as As, Cd, etc. From organic carbon content, the highest contaminated site was estimated that oils contributed to sediments up to 10%, and this site showed high V concentration. Potentially contaminated sediments by crude oil could be differentiated from unaffected sediments through V/Al and Ni/Al ratios, which can be used as indicators of oil contamination even after the oils were fully degraded.

Effect of Dietary Fat and Oils on Serum Lipid Status and Fatty Acid Composition in Tissues of Rat (식이지방이 흰쥐의 혈청 지질상태 및 조직 지방산분포에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to establish tissue lipid status in animal on feeding of various dietary fat and oils, each group of rats was fed a semisynthetic diet containing 10%(w/w) mackerel oil (MO), eel oil (EO), soybean oil (SO), rapeseed oil (RO) or beef tallow (BT) for 1, 2 and 4 weeks, After each feeding period, levels of cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid were measured in serum. Fatty acid ${\leftarrow}$ composition was also investigated in serum and tissue lipids. Levels of total serum cholesterol were lower but HDL-cholesterol were higher in fish oil groups, which resulted in significantly higher ratio of HDL to total cholesterol in the fish oil groups. Fish oil groups, in general, also had lower levels of serum triglyceride and phospholipid than other groups, but S0 group maintained as low phospholipid levrl as fish oil groups. Fatty acid composition of dietary fat was reflected in all the tissues investigated but with varying degrees. Very long chain fatty acids, specific components exclusively found in fish oils were most well reflected in liver and relatively well in serum, whereas linoleic acid and erucic acid of SO and RO in the diet were better shown up in heart and adipose tissue. It attracted a particular attention that major proportions of long chain monoenoic acids $(C_{22:1})$ occurring both in MO and RO were detected separately in liver and heart plus adipose tissue, the result of which strongly indicates that there is a significant difference in metabolism between isomers $(C_{22:1}\;w\;11\;and\;C_{22:1}\;w\;9,\;respectively)$. It is suggested from this study that differences in lipid status as well as in the levels of serum lipids result from uniqueness in metabolism of each different fatty acid and give rise to distinguishable change in serum lipoprotein pattern, followed by diet with different fat sources.
