  • Using ultrasonic irradiation, the separation and recovery of PV cell, made of silicon wafer, from PV module was carried out through selective decomposition of EVA used as an interlaminated binder. The ultrasonic cleaner of bath-type (Output: 130 W, Frequency: 40 kHz) was used as an ultrasonic apparatus in this research. With the fixed distance of 2 cm, from ultrasonic generator to PV cell, the experiment of EVA decomposition was performed in various organic solvents such as Toluene, Trichloroethylene, O-dichlorobenzene, Benzene. And also their concentrations and temperature was changed to survey the optimum conditions. However EVA can be decomposed perfectly at $55^{\circ}C$ within 160 min in 5 M of all kinds of solvent, PV cell may be recovered with being damaged or broken severely. This damage may be resulted from the swelling of EVA in the process of decomposition. Whereas, at the condition of 5 M at $65^{\circ}C$, PV cell can be recovered with the state of minor damage or crack. This implies that the decomposition rate of EVA increases with an increase of temperature, thereby EVA can be decomposed before the swelling of EVA layer. Conclusively, it is possible for PV cell to be recovered within 40 min, at $65^{\circ}C$ in 5 M, with less damage.

  • Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) materials have been widely used as an electron collector in DSSC. This is required to have an extremely high porosity and surface area such that the dye can be sufficiently adsorbed and be electronically interconnected, resulting in the generation of a high photocurrent within cells. In particular, their geometrical structures and crystalline phase have been extensively investigated as important issues in improving its photovoltaic efficiency. In this study, we present a new strategy to fabricate a photoelectrode having a periodic structured $TiO_2$ film templated from 1D or 3D polystyrene (PS) microspheres array. Monodisperse PS spheres of various radiuses were used for colloidal array on FTO glasses and two types of photoelectrode structures with different $TiO_2$ materials were investigated respectively. One is the igloo-shaped electrode prepared by $TiO_2$ deposition by RF-sputtering onto 2D microsphere-templated substrates. At the interface between the film and substrate, there are voids formed by the decomposition of PS microspheres during the calcination step. These holes might be expected to play the predominant roles as scattering spherical voids to promote a light harvesting effect, a spacious structure for electrolytes with higher viscosity and effective paths for electron transfer. Additionally the nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ phase prepared by the RF-sputtering method was previously reported to improve the electron drift mobility within $TiO_2$ electrodes. This yields solar cells with a cell efficiency of 2.45% or more at AM 1.5 illumination, which is a very remarkable result, considering its $TiO_2$ electrode thickness (<2 ${\mu}m$). This study can be expanded to obtain higher cell efficiency by higher dye loading through the increase of surface area or multi-layered stacking. The other is the inverse opal photonic crystal electrode prepared by titania particles infusion within 3D colloidal arrays. To obtain the enlargement of ordered area and high quality of crystallinity, the synthesis of titania particles coated with a organic thin layer were applied instead of sol-gel process using the $TiO_2$ precursors. They were dispersed so well in most solvents without aggregates and infused successfully within colloidal array structures. This ordered mesoporous structure provides the large surface area leading to the enough adsorption of dye molecules and have an light harvesting effect due to the photonic band gap properties (back-and-forth reflection effects within structures). A major advantage of this colloidal array template method is that the pore size and its distribution within $TiO_2$ photoelectrodes are determined by those of latex beads, which can be controlled easily. These materials may have promising potentials for future applications of membrane, sensor and so on as well as solar cells.

  • Recently, the peptide(or protein)-polymer hybrid materials (PPs) were sought in many research areas as potential building blocks for assembling nanostructures in selective solvents. In PPs, the facile routes of preparing well-defined peptide-polymer bio-conjugates and their specific activities in various applications are important issues. Our strategy to prepare the peptide-polymer hybrid materials was to combine atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method with solid phase peptide synthesis. The standard solid phase peptide synthesis method was employed to prepare the PYGK (proline-tyrosine-glycine-lysine) peptide. PYGK is an analogue peptide, PFGK (proline-phenylalanine-glycine-lysine), which interacted with plasminogen in fibrinolysis. The peptide and the peptide-initiator were characterized with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and $^1H$ NMR spectrometer. The peptide-polymer, pSt-PYGK was characterized by GPC, IR, $^1H$ NMR spectrometer and TLC. Spherical micellar aggregates were determined by TEM and SEM. Current synthesis methodology suggested opportunities to create the well-defined peptide-polymer hybrid materials with specific binding activity.

  • Ultra-fine powder (FA) extracts from persimmon were investigated as potential food materials in industrial processes because such extracts have various useful biological activities. We examined the antioxidant and anti-allergic activity of FA extracts using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing activity of plasma (FRAP) models, and by measuring interleukin 4 (IL-4) expression in spleen cells and in an atopy animal model. FA extracts were prepared using solvents including distilled water and 50% (v/v) acetone. The results showed that FA extracts had potent DPPH and FRAP activities, decreased IL-4 expression in spleen cells, and inhibited ear thickness and inflammation in a mouse animal model. The data indicate that a FA extract could be used as an antioxidant and/or anti-inflammation agent, and in industrial food preparation processes.

  • A series of new thorium nitrate complexes with crown ethers have been synthesized from the reaction of the hydrated thorium nitrate, with the appropriate crown ethers of different cavity sizes in various solvents such as methanol, ethanol, butanol, methylacetate, acetone, tetrahydrofuran and acetylacetone. CHN elemental analysis, ICPAS, thermal analysis and Karl-Fischer method have been used to characterize their compositions, and the spectroscopic methods of IR, UV, $^1H-NMR$, and X-ray diffraction have been employed to determine the structures and solvolysis phenomena of these complexes. and the electrical conductances were measured in DMSO, and water solvent. The solvolysis have been observed only in the complexes synthesized in acetylacetone solvent. In the solvated complexes of 15-crown-5 and 18-crown-6, the mole ratio of $Th^{4+}$: ligand : acetylacetone is found to be 1:1:1, but in the non-solvated complexes of 12-crown-4 and 15-crown-5, the mole ratios of Th:L are 1:2 and 2:3, respectively, and that in the complexes of both 18-crown-6 and dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 is 1:1. All complexes which were not solvated have shown $n{\to}{\sigma}^{\ast}$ electronic transitions of crown ether whereas complexes solvated have exhibited both $n{\to}{\sigma}^{\ast}$ of crown ether and $n{\to}{\pi}^{\ast}$ transitions of acac. The dissociation mole ratio of $Th^{4+}$ and nitrate ion is found to be 1:1 in aprotic solvent, and 1:4 in protic solvent like water.

  • In this study, extracts from Caragana sinica flowers and leaves were tested for antioxidant and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory activities, along with xanthine oxidase, tyrosinase, elastase, and astringent effects. Total phenolic compounds of acetone extracts from Caragana sinica flowers and leaves were the highest at 3.42 and 2.98 mg/g, respectively, when various extraction solvents were used. Optimal conditions for extraction of phenolic compounds from Caragana sinica leaves and flowers were 70% ethanol for 18 hr. DPPH scavenging activities were the highest in 70% ethanol extracts of Caragana sinica. ABTS radical cation decolorization values of 70% ethanol extracts were higher than those 60% ethanol extracts at 74%. Antioxidant protection factor was 1.2 PF in 70% ethanol extracts from Caragana sinica flowers and leaves. TBARS was lower than that of control (0.54 ${\mu}M$) in all sections. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory activity of Caragana sinica flower extract was 80~90% at a phenolic concentration of 0.2~1.0 mg/mL, whereas xanthin oxidase inhibitory activity of Caragana sinica leaf extract was higher than that of flower extract. Tyrosinase inhibitory activity, which is related to skin-whitening, was above 20%, whereas elastase inhibitory activity related to anti-wrinkle effect was above 50% at a phenolic concentration of 0.8 mg/mL. Astringent effects of Caragana sinica flower and leaf extracts were higher than tannic acid as a control at an equivalent concentration. This result suggests that extracts from Caragana sinica flowers and leaves are suitable as functional foods having anti-hypertension, anti-gout, and medicinal cosmetic activities, including whitening and anti-wrinkle effects.

  • In order to find out proper PVdF gel polymer electrolyte for Li/S battery, we investigated PVdF gel polymer electrolytes with various glyme type plasticizer such as polyglyme, tetraglyme, triglyme. The organic solvents as triglyme, tetraglyme, polyglyme (Mn = 250, 500) has different chain length of ethylene oxide(EO) in solvent of glyme system. ionic conductivity decreased as increasing chain length of EO in plasticizers. Ionic conductivity of PVdF gel electrolyte with tetraglyme, triglyme, polyglyme (Mn = 250, 500) at room temperature was $5{\times}10^{-4},\;3{\times}10^{-4},\;6{\times}10^{-5},\;3{\times}10^{-5}\;S/cm$, respectively. Li/S cell with PVdF gel polymer electrolyte using tetraglyme plasticizer had low interfacial resistance and the highest initial discharge capacity of 1232 mAh/g of active sulfur, which was about 70% utilization of theoretical value.

  • Larrea nitida is a plant that belongs to the Zygophyllaceae family and is widely used in South America to treat inflammatory diseases, tumors and menstrual pain. However, its pharmacological activity remains unclear. In this study we evaluated the property of selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) of Larrea nitida extracts (LNE) as a phytoestrogen that can mimic, modulate or disrupt the actions of endogenous estrogens, depending on the tissue and relative amount of other SERMs. To investigate the property of SERM of LNE, we performed MCF-7 cell proliferation assays, estrogen response element (ERE)-luciferase reporter gene assay, human estrogen receptor (hER) binding assays and in vivo uterotrophic assay. To gain insight into the active principles, we performed a bioassay-guided analysis of LNE employing solvents of various polarities and using classical column chromatography, which yielded 16 fractions (LNs). LNE showed high binding affinities for $hER{\alpha}$ and $hER{\beta}$ with $IC_{50}$ values of $1.20{\times}10^{-7}$ g/ml and $1.00{\times}10^{-7}$ g/ml, respectively. LNE induced $17{\beta}$-estradiol (E2)-induced MCF-7 cell proliferation, however, it reduced the proliferation in the presence of E2. Furthermore, LNE had an atrophic effect in the uterus of immature rats through reducing the expression level of progesterone receptor (PR) proteins. LN08 and LN10 had more potent affinities for binding on $hER{\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ than other fractions. Our results indicate that LNE had higher binding affinities for $hER{\beta}$ than $hER{\alpha}$, and showed SERM properties in MCF-7 breast cancer cells and the rat uterus. LNE may be useful for the treatment of estrogen-related conditions, such as female cancers and menopause.
