  • A singly charged methyl orange(MO) anion was found to be extracted with chlorpheniramine maleate(CPM) as a 1 : 1 complex in chloroform. Of various solvents, MO-chloroform system gave a yellow color for CPM, while in the absence of CPM, an organic phase showed almost no color. In this way, the spectrophotometric method was investigated for the determination of CPM by solvent extraction. The addition of alcoholic bolic acid solution to the solvent extract gave a higher color stability and transparency at least 5 days, but the extract alone lost its color intensity significantly. CPM is determined by measuring the absorbance of the extracts over a range of $1{\sim}7{\times}10^{-4}M\;(39{\sim}273\;{\mu}g/ml)$ in aqueous solution at 423 nm. The molar absorptivity was $2.26{\times}10^3\;l,\;mol^{-1},\;cm^{-1}$. The absorbance of the extract was constant in the range of pH $3.7{\sim}4.6$. This novel method was applied for the determination of CPM in artificial and commercial preparations in comparison with the analytical method of CPM tablets in K.P.IV. The results obtained showed that the former was better in accuracy and time consumption than the latter.

  • $Cu_{1.8}Zn_{1.2}(Sn_{1-x}Ge_x)S_4$ (CZTGeS) nanocrystals were mechanochemically synthesized from elemental precursor powders without using any organic solvents and any additives. The composition of CZTGeS nanocrystals were systematically varied with different Ge mole fraction (x) from 0.1 to 0.9. The XRD, Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution TEM, and diffuse reflectance studies show that the as-synthesized CZTGeS nanocrystals exhibited consistent changes in various structural and optical properties as a function of x, such as lattice parameters, wave numbers for $A_1$ Raman vibration mode, interplanar distances (d-spacing), and optical bandgap energies. The bandgap energy of the synthesized CZTGeS nanocrystals gradually increases from 1.40 to 1.61 eV with increasing x from 0.1 to 0.9, demonstrating that Ge-doping is useful means to tune the bandgap of mechanochemically synthesized nanocrystals-based kesterite thin-film solar cells. The preliminary solar cell performance is presented with an efficiency of 3.66%.

  • In spite of various applications of chitin derivatives from waste marine sources, commercial use of chitin has been limited due to resistance to chemicals and the absense of proper solvents. We prepared chitin through decalcification, bleaching and deproteination from protunus trituberculatus shells by the application of Hackman's method. Structural and chemical properties of chitin were investigated to have proper specific surface area and particle size by IR, BET and PSA. The amount of absorbed water of chitin reached equilibrium by stirring about 15 minutes. The amount of absored water of the prepared chitin were large than the commercial chitin. When prepared chitin tested on dyeing wastewater, they showed better treatment efficiency in COD, suspended solid, and color tests than the commercial chitin. The adsorption capacity increased with decreasing particle size for the prepared chitin. Treatment efficiency for color was increased as the sitirring rate increased. Results show the possibility of the prepared chitin from waste marine sources as a treatment system for dyeing wastewater.

  • The ion exchange resins have been synthesized from chlormethyl styrene - 1,4 -divinyl-benzene(DVB) with $1\%,\;4\%,\;and\;10\%$-crosslinking and macrocyclic ligand of cryptand type by copolymerization method and the adsorption characteristics of uranium(VI), calcium(II) and lutetium(III) metallic ions have been investigated in various experimental conditions. The synthesis of these resins was confirmed by content of chlorine, element analysis, and IR-spectrum. The effects of pH, time, dielectric constant of solvent and crosslink on adsorption of metallic ions were investigated. The uranium ion was showed fast adsorption on the resins above pH 3. The optimum equilibrium time for adsorption of metallic ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in ethanol was in increasing order uranium $(UO_2^{2+})>calcium(Ca^{2+})>lutetium(Lu^{3+})$ ion. The adsorption was order of $1\%,\;4\%,\;and\;10\%$ crosslink resin and adsorption of resin decreased in proportion to order of dielectric constant of solvents.

  • The surface energy control capability of electrohydrodynamic force provides electrospraying with various potential advantages such as simple particle size control, mono-dispersity, high recovery, and mild processing conditions. Herein, the one step nano-encapsulation of protein drugs using electrospraying was developed. The major processing parameters such as the conductivity of spraying liquids, flow rate, the distance between electric potentials, etc were examined to obtain the maximum efficiency. The recovery of particles was found relatively high as could be conjectured based on the principle of electrospraying. When organic solvents were employed, the processing windows of electrospraying were relatively narrow than water systems. Efficient nano-encapsulation of BSA with polymers was conveniently achieved using electrospraying at above 12 kV.

  • In this study, hemicelluloses were pre-extracted from mixed hardwood chips using sodium hydroxide solution and then they were isolated from pre-extractives by using various solvents. Isolation was conducted by precipitating hemicelluloses with isopropanol, ethanol, 1,4-dioxane, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and potassium hydroxide (KOH), respectively. The precipitate yield on alkali pre-extractives was the highest when hemicelluloses were isolated by DMSO and then precipitated with ethanol. Most precipitates were yellow colored. The efficiency of isolation was evaluated by analysing the characteristics of isolated hemicelluloses. Isolation using DMSO, KOH and 1,4-dioxane ($80^{\circ}C$) showed rather high efficiency. The highest total separation efficiency was about 77% when alkali pre-extractives were reacted with KOH and precipitated with ethanol. The quantity and purity of isolated hemicelluloses were affected by the solvent type.

  • The pseudo-first order rate constants have been obtained for the solvolysis of pseudo-saccharinechloride in MeOH-$H_2O$, EtOH-$H_2O$, MeOH-MeCN and MeOH-$(Me)_2$CO solvents mixtures at various temperatures. Values of n and m in the Kivinen and Grunwald-Winstein plots, respectively, have been determined and the Taft's solvatochromic parameters were obtained; based on these solvent effect parameters as well as on the activation parameters it was concluded that reaction proceeds via an $S_N2$ mechanism.

  • The effects of binary solvent mixtures with various ratios of toluene and ethanol on the properties of slurries and green sheets were investigated. Viscosity of slurry was changed by varying the ratio of solvent mixture which affected the solubility of binder. The relative solvency behavior of a solvent mixture could be predicted with the Hildebrand solubility parameter(${\delta}$) and hydrogen bonding index( ${\gamma}$). The minimum viscosity, the best dispersion of binder, was reached at the composition of toluene:ethanol=4:6, which corresponded to our forecast. The mechanical properties of green sheets related to evaporation of solvents were influenced by the composition of the solvent mixture. At the azeotrope the skin was formed on a drying cast during the drying process because of fast evaporation. At a range of concentrations over 50wt% toluene, green sheets could not be fully dried at low temperature due to excessive toluene. The mechanical properties of green sheets were excellent at the azeotrope-like composition of toluene:ethanol=4:6 which has a little excess of toluene over the azeotrope.

  • Magnesium (Mg) deposition and dissolution behaviors of 0.2 M $MgBu_2-(AlCl_2Et)_2$, 0.5 M $Mg(ClO_4)_2$, and 0.4M $(PhMgCl)_2-AlCl_3$-based electrolytes with and without tris(pentafluorophenyl) borane (TPFPB) are investigated by ex situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and galvanostatic cycling of Mg/copper (Cu) cells. To ascertain the factors responsible for the anodic stability of the electrolytes, linear sweep voltammogrametry (LSV) experiments for various electrolytes and solvents are conducted. The effects of TPFPB as an additive on the anodic stability of 0.4M ($(PhMgCl)_2-AlCl_3$/THF electrolyte are also discussed.

  • We investigated the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and the antimicrobial activity of ethanol extracts obtained from Saussurea lappa C.B. Clarke. The ethanol extracts of S. lappa C.B. Clarke were fractionated with various solvents (n-hexane, chloroform, and n-butanol). The antimicrobial activity of S. lappa C.B. Clarke was examined by disc-diffusion and micro-dilution susceptibility assays with six food-borne pathogens, and compared to that of the synthetic antibiotics. It is found that the S. lappa C.B. Clarke ethanol extract and n-hexane fraction have strong activity against B. cereus and V. parahaemolyticus strains compared to ampicillin. The inhibitory concentration ($IC_{50}$) values of hexane fraction against L. monocytogenes, B. cereus, and B. subtilis were 62.5, 250 and 500 ppm, respectively. Therefore, these data suggest that S. lappa C.B. Clarke may be useful as antimicrobial agents against food-borne pathogens.
