Cutting Force Control of Turning Process Using Fuzzy Theory (퍼지이론을 이용한 선삭의 절삭력제어)

  • The dynamic characteristics of turning processes are complex, non-linear and time-varying. Consequently, the conventional techniques based on crisp mathematical model may not guarantee cutting force regulation. This paper presents a fuzzy controller which can regulate cutting force in turning process under varying cutting conditions. The fuzzy control rules are extablished from operator experience and expert knowledge about the process dynamics. Regulation which increases productivity and tool life is achieved by adjusting feedrate according to the variation of cutting conditions. The performance of the proposed controller is evaluated by cutting experiments in the converted conventional lathe. The results of experiments show that the proposed fuzzy controller has a good cutting force regulation capability in spite of the variation of cutting conditions.

Development of Tele-image Processing Algorithm for Automatic Harvesting of House Melon (하우스멜론 수확자동화를 위한 원격영상 처리알고리즘 개발)

  • Hybrid robust image processing algorithm to extract visual features of melon during the cultivation was developed based on a wireless tele-operative interface. Features of a melon such as size and shape including position were crucial to successful task automation and future development of cultivation data base. An algorithm was developed based on the concept of hybrid decision-making which shares a task between the computer and the operator utilizing man-computer interactive interface. A hybrid decision-making system was composed of three modules such as wireless image transmission, task specification and identification, and man-computer interface modules. Computing burden and the instability of the image processing results caused by the variation of illumination and the complexity of the environment caused by the irregular stem and shapes of leaves and shades were overcome using the proposed algorithm. With utilizing operator's teaching via LCD touch screen of the display monitor, the complexity and instability of the melon identification process has been avoided. Hough transform was modified for the image obtained from the locally specified window to extract the geometric shape and position of the melon. It took less than 200 milliseconds processing time.

  • Face recognition has recently become one of the most popular research areas in the fields of computer vision, machine learning, and pattern recognition because it spans numerous applications, such as access control, surveillance, security, credit-card verification, and criminal identification. In this paper, we propose a simple descriptor called an ECSP(Extended Center-Symmetric Pattern) for illumination-robust face recognition. The ECSP operator encodes the texture information of a local face region by emphasizing diagonal components of a previous CS-LBP(Center-Symmetric Local Binary Pattern). Here, the diagonal components are emphasized because facial textures along the diagonal direction contain much more information than those of other directions. The facial texture information of the ECSP operator is then used as the input image of an image covariance-based feature extraction algorithm such as 2D-PCA(Two-Dimensional Principal Component Analysis). Performance evaluation of the proposed approach was carried out using various binary pattern operators and recognition algorithms on the Yale B database. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach achieved better recognition accuracy than other approaches, and we confirmed that the proposed approach is effective against illumination variation.

Development of Computerized Densitometry for the Quantitative Analysis of Diffuse Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Atrophy

  • Computerized densitometry was developed or the quantitative measurement of diffuse retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) atrophy and intra- and inter-operator reliability and clinical validity of this system were evaluated. Vertical diameter, center of the optic disc, and peripapillary circles which had radii of 1.5 and 2.5 times that of the optic disc were user-interactively determined in digitized RNFL photograph and density profile along each circle was measured and normalized. The areas under the normalized density profiles of the superior and the inferior segments in both circle were used or the study of RNFL. To determine the variability and correspondence in the measurements of density variations, 21 RNFL photographs of glaucoma patients which showed varying degrees of atrophy underwent computerized densitometry by two operators on two separate occasions. Coefficient of variation in the densitometric measurements was $1.2{\sim}5.4%$. Intra- and inter-operator reliabilities were excellent. The correlations between the densitometric values and mean deviations of Humphrey C30-2 visual field showed statistical significance. Computerized densitometry of RNFL photographs was useful in the objective and quantitative assessment of diffuse RNFL atrophy.

  • A method of designing a state feedback gam achieving a specified insensitivity of the closed-loop trajectory by the singularly perturbed unified system using the operators is proposed. The order of system is reduced by the singular perturbation technique by ignoring the fast mode in it. The proposed method takes care of the actual trajectory variations over the range of the singular perturbation parameter. Necessary conditions for optimality are also derived. The previous study was done in the continuous time system The present paper extends the previous study to the discrete system and the ${\delta}-operating$ system that unifies the continuous and discrete systems. Advantages of the proposed method are shown in the numerical example.

A Study on control of weld pool and torch position in GMA welding of steel pipe by using sensing systems (파이프의 가스메탈아크 용접에 있어 센서 시스템을 이용한 용융지 제어 및 용접선 추적에 관한 연구)

  • To implement full automation in pipe welding, it si most important to develop special sensors and their related systems which act like human operator when detecting irregular groove conditions. In this study, an automatic pipe Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) system was proposed to full control pipe welding procedure with intelligent sensor systems. A five-axes manipulator was proposed for welding torch to automatically access to exact welding position when pipe size and welding angle were given. Pool status and torch position were measured by using a weld-pool image monitoring and processing technique in root-pass welding for weld seam tracking and weld pool control. To overcome the intensive arc light, pool image was captured at the instance of short circuit of welding power loop. Captured image was processed to determine weld pool shape. For weld seam tracking, the relative distance of a torch position from the pool center was calculated in the extracted pool shape to move torch just onto the groove center. To control penetration of root pas, gap was calculated in the extracted pool image, and then weld conditions were controlled for obtaining appropriate penetration. welding speed was determined with a fuzzy logic, and welding current and voltage were determined from a data base to correspond to the gap. For automatic fill-pass welding, the function of human operator of real time weld seam control can be substituted by a sensor system. In this study, an arc sensor system was proposed based on a fuzzy control logic. Using the proposed automatic system, root-pass welding of pipe which had gap variation was assured to be appropriately controlled in welding conditions and in torch position by showing sound welding result and good seam tracking capability. Fill-pass welding by the proposed system also showed very successful result by tracking along the offset welding line without any control of human operator.

Recognition of Car Plate using Gray Brightness Variation, HSI Information and Enhanced ART2 Algorithm (명암도 변화 및 HSI 정보와 개선된 ART2 알고리즘을 이용한 차량 번호판 인식)

  • We proposed an enhanced extraction method of vehicle plate, in which both the brightness variation of gray and the Hue value of HSI color model were used. For the extraction of the vehicle plate from a vehicle image, first of all, candidate regions for the vehicle plate were extracted from the image by using the property of brightness variation of the image. A real place region was determined among candidate regions by the density of pixels with the Hue value of green and white. For- extracting the feature area containing characters from the extracted vehicle plate, we used the histogram-based approach of individual characters. And we proposed and applied for the recognition of characters the enhanced ART2 algorithm which support the dynamical establishment of the vigilance threshold with the genera]iced union operator of Yager. In addition, we propose an enhanced SOSL algorithm which is integrated both enhanced ART2 and supervised learning methods. The performance evaluation was performed using 100's real vehicle images and the evaluation results demonstrated that the extraction rates of tole proposed extraction method were improved, compared with that of previous methods based un brightness variation, RGB and HSI individually . Furthermore, the recognition rates of the proposed algorithms were improved much more than that of the conventional ART2 and BP algorithms.

Piecewise Image Denoising with Multi-scale Block Region Detector based on Quadtree Structure (쿼드트리 기반의 다중 스케일 블록 영역 검출기를 통한 구간적 영상 잡음 제거 기법)

  • This paper presents a piecewise image denoising with multi-scale block region detector based on quadtree structure for effective image restoration. Proposed piecewise image denoising method suggests multi-scale block region detector (MBRD) by dividing whole pixels of a noisy image into three parts, with regional characteristics: strong variation region, weak variation region, and flat region. These regions are classified according to total pixels variation between multi-scale blocks and are applied principal component analysis with local pixel grouping, bilateral filtering, and structure-preserving image decomposition operator called relative total variation. The performance of proposed method is evaluated by Experimental results. we can observe that region detection results generated by the detector seems to be well classified along the characteristics of regions. In addition, the piecewise image denoising provides the positive gain with regard to PSNR performance. In the visual evaluation, details and edges are preserved efficiently over the each region; therefore, the proposed method effectively reduces the noise and it proves that it improves the performance of denoising by the restoration process according to the region characteristics.

  • Since the usual conventional edge detectors employ the local differential derivatives, the detected edges are not uniform in their widths or some edges are missed out of the detection on magnified images. We employ a mapping from the exactly monotonic intensity distributions of ramp edges to the simple step functions of intensity, which is referred to as perfect sharpening map of ramp edges. This map is based on the non-local feature of intensity distribution and used to introduce a modified differentiation, in terms of which we can construct an efficient edge detector adaptive to the variation of edge width. By adopting the operator MADD in this paper, we developed an edge detector that works stably against the magnification of image or the variation of edge width. It is shown by comparing to the conventional algorithms that the proposed one is very excellent.

  • The authors investigate influences of manipulator dynamics on and roles of kinesthetic sensation and visual sensation in a Human-Machine Cooperative System (HMCS). At first, the general structure and essential transfer functions of HMCSs are described based on the previous work. Then, after showing theoretical treatment of manipulator dynamics, this paper analyzes the influences on HMCSs in two cases: one is the control design focusing on tool dynamics and reaction force transfer function, and the other is that specifies maneuver transfer function and transfer function for object dynamics variation. In addition to conventional experiments only employing kinesthetic sensation, other experiments with both kinesthetic and visual sensations are performed to examine difference in the roles of these sensations and the validity of the design without the visual sensation.
