  • Research outcome shows the following: 1. Estimation by the year 2015 on the number of the aged people and on the number of the household of living alone and living with spouse only, per age-cohort by 5 years, per basic self-govern-ins local groups and the city of Daegu. The result is supposed to serve as meaningful basic material in building up future policies in many areas for the aged people living in their homes. 2. Estimation varies according to the areas and the age-cohorts. In urban areas, increase of the numbers of the households of the aged people living alone and living with spouse only is estimated in every age-cohort. In rural areas, variance between two age-groups, old-old and young-old, is observed. Both of the numbers of the households for the aged living alone and the aged living with spouse only have increased continuously by the year 2005. But the hither-to increase tendency is estimated to reverse itself to a decrease starting from the younger within the young-old age group, and the ratio of the old-old age-group in rural population will sharply increase starting from the year 2005. Such increase in the number of the aged people in need of the housing and the social support requires the increasing policy consideration for the issue of housing for the aged living in their homes. In spite of the decreasing tendency in the number of the aged people living alone and living with spouse only in rural areas, still there will continue to be more number of such households than in urban area for the time being. The government of Gyeongsangbuk-Do should pay more consideration to the old-old aged living alone and living with spouse only in rural areas, while being prepared for the sharply increasing households for the aged living alone and living with spouse only in urban areas.

  • The multiuser detection (MUD) based wireless receiver requires more accurate channel estimation than the single user detection (SUD) schemes such as Rake receiver, and hence the post processing is required for MUD to clean up the estimated channel coefficients by eliminating the noise only coefficients. The adaptive post processing method is proposed in order to provide more accurate channel responses and the power level of the background noise and interferences at the cost of the negligible processing delay compared to the conventional method based on the threshold test with the threshold value relative to the noise variance. The simulations are performed in 3GPP-TDD mode environment. The results show that the noise estimation error of the proposed method is maximum $10\%$, which is much smaller than $50\%$ maximum error of the conventional method.

  • This study aimed to predict changes in forest area using a probability density function, in order to promote effective forest management in the area north of the civilian control line (known as the Minbuk area) in Korea. Time series analysis (2010 and 2016) of forest area using land cover maps and accessibility expressed by distance covariates (distance from buildings, roads, and civilian control line) was applied to a probability density function. In order to estimate the probability density function, mean and variance were calculated using three methods: area weight (AW), area rate weight (ARW), and sample area change rate weight (SRW). Forest area increases in regions with lower accessibility (i.e., greater distance) from buildings and roads, but no relationship with accessibility from the civilian control line was found. Estimation of forest area change using different distance covariates shows that SRW using distance from buildings provides the most accurate estimation, with around 0.98-fold difference from actual forest area change, and performs well in a Chi-Square test. Furthermore, estimation of forest area until 2028 using SRW and distance from buildings most closely replicates patterns of actual forest area changes, suggesting that estimation of future change could be possible using this method. The method allows investigation of the current status of land cover in the Minbuk area, as well as predictions of future changes in forest area that could be utilized in forest management planning and policymaking in the northern area.

  • Since speech enhancement algorithms based on Kalman/Wiener filter require a priori knowledge of the noise and have focused on the minimization of the variance of the estimation error between clean and estimated speech signal, small estimation error on the noise statistics may lead to large estimation error. However, H/sub ∞/ filter does not require any assumptions and a priori knowledge of the noise statistics, but searches the best estimated signal among the entire estimated signal by applying least upper bound, consequently it is more robust to the variation of noise statistics than Kalman/Wiener filter. In this paper, we Propose a speech enhancement method using HMM and multi H/sub ∞/ filters. First, HMM parameters are estimated with the training data. Secondly, speech is filtered with multiple number of H/sub ∞/ filters. Finally, the estimation of clean speech is obtained from the sum of the weighted filtered outputs. Experimental results shows about 1dB∼2dB SNR improvement with a slight increment of computation compared with the Kalman filter method.

  • In this paper, we handle the estimation method of the received $E_{b}l1_{o}$ for forward closed-loop power control in cdma2000 systems. The estimation of MS-received $E_{b}l1_{o}$ utilizes the symbols related to the forward power control subchannel transmission. The estimation of the received bit energy and noise variance is analyzed for the frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel. In order to improve SIR (signal-to-interference), the estimation of the received bit energy is made by the coherent combining of the rake-fingers and received I/Q symbols. And, in this paper, we evaluate the performance of forward closed-loop power control according to the mobile speed and the power adjustment step size in terms of the bit error rate (BER) and power control error. Simulation results present the optimal power adjustment step sizes according to the mobile speeds.

  • In the realm of rock excavation projects, precise estimation of the drilling rate index stands as a pivotal factor in strategic planning and cost assessment. This study introduces and evaluates two pioneering computational intelligence models designed for the prognostication of the drilling rate index, a pivotal parameter with direct implications for cost estimation in rock excavation projects. These models, denoted as the Relevance Vector Regression (RVR) optimized with the Invasive Weed Optimization algorithm (IWO) (RVR-IWO model) and the RVR integrated with the Shuffled Frog Leaping algorithm (SFL) (RVR-SFL model), represent a groundbreaking approach to forecasting drilling rate index. The RVR-IWO and RVR-SFL models were meticulously devised to harness the capabilities of computational intelligence and optimization techniques for drilling rate index estimation. This research pioneers the integration of IWO and SFL with RVR, constituting an unprecedented effort in forecasting drilling rate index. The primary objective of this study was to gauge the precision and dependability of these models in forecasting the drilling rate index, revealing significant distinctions between the two. In terms of predictive precision, the RVR-IWO model emerged as the superior choice when compared to the RVR-SFL model, underscoring the remarkable efficacy of the Invasive Weed Optimization algorithm. The RVR-IWO model delivered noteworthy results, boasting a Variance Account for (VAF) of 0.8406, a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.0114, and a Squared Correlation Coefficient (R2) of 0.9315. On the contrary, the RVR-SFL model exhibited slightly lower precision, yielding an MSE of 0.0160, a VAF of 0.8205, and an R2 of 0.9120. These findings serve to highlight the potential of the RVR-IWO model as a formidable instrument for drilling rate index prediction, particularly within the framework of rock excavation projects. This research not only makes a significant contribution to the realm of drilling engineering but also underscores the broader adaptability of the RVR-IWO model in tackling an array of challenges within the domain of rock engineering. Ultimately, this study advances the comprehension of drilling rate index estimation and imparts valuable insights into the practical implementation of computational intelligence methodologies within the realm of engineering projects.

  • Growth traits, such as body weight, directly influence productivity and economic efficiency in the swine industry. In this study, we estimate heritability for body weight traits usinginformation from pedigree and genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip data. Four body weight phenotypes were measured in 1,105 $F_2$ progeny from an intercross between Landrace and Jeju native black pigs. All experimental animals were subjected to genotypic analysis using PorcineSNP60K BeadChip platform, and 39,992 autosomal SNP markers filtered by quality control criteria were used to construct genomic relationship matrix for heritability estimation. Restricted maximum likelihood estimates of heritability were obtained using both genomic- and pedigree- relationship matrix in a linear mixed model. The heritability estimates using SNP information were smaller (0.36-0.55) than those which were estimated using pedigree information (0.62-0.97). To investigate effect of common environment, such as maternal effect, on heritability estimation, we included maternal effect as an additional random effect term in the linear mixed model analysis. We detected substantial proportions of phenotypic variance components were explained by maternal effect. And the heritability estimates using both pedigree and SNP information were decreased. Therefore, heritability estimates must be interpreted cautiously when there are obvious common environmental variance components.

  • Up to now studies on the fusion of travel time from various detectors have been conducted based on the variance raito of the intermittent data mainly collected by GPS or probe vehicles. The fusion model based on the variance ratio of intermittent data is not suitable for the license plate recognition AVIs which can deal with vast amount of data. This study was carried out to develop the fusion model based on travel time acquired from the license plate recognition AVIs and the point detectors. In order to fuse travel time acquired from the point detectors and the license plate recognition AVIs, the optimized fusion model and the proportional fusion model were developed in this study. As a result of verification, the optimized fusion model showed the superior estimation performance. The optimized fusion model is the dynamic fusion ratio estimation model on real time base, which calculates fusion weights based on real time historic data and applies them to the current time period. The results of this study are expected to be used effectively for National Highway Traffic Management System to provide traffic information in the future. However, there should be further studies on the Proper distance for the establishment of the AVIs and the license plate matching rate according to the lanes for AVIs to be established.

  • This paper presents the analytic derivation of the SINR, when a linear array antenna is accommodated into the cellular CDMA basestation receiver, in relation to the two major performance effecting factors in beamforming(BF) applications, i. e., the direction selectivity, which refers to the narrowness of the mainbeam width, and the direction-of-arrival(DOA) estimation accuracy. The analytically derived results are compared with the operation simulation of the receiver realized with the several BF algorithms and their agreements are confirmed, consequently verifying the correctness of the analysis and the operation simulation. In order to investigate separately the effects of the errors occurring in the direction estimation and in the interference suppression, which are the two major functional components of general BF algorithms, both the algorithms of steering BF and the minimum- variance- distortionless-response(MVDR) BF are applied to the analysis. A signal model to reflect the spatially scattering phenomenon of the RF waves entering into the .:nay antenna, which directly affects on the accuracy of the BF algorithm's direction estimation, is also suggested in this paper and applied to the analysis and the operation simulation. It is confirmed from the results that the enhancement of the direction selectivity of the away antenna is not desirable in view of both the implementation economy and the BF algorithm's robustness to the erroneous factors. Such a trade-off characteristics is significant in the sense that it can be capitalized to obtain an economic means of BF implementation that does not severely deteriorate its performance while ensuring the robustness to the erroneous effects, consequently manifesting the significance of the analysis results of this paper that can be used as a design reference in developing BF algorithms to the cellular CDMA system.

  • This study is intended to compare the performances of sound source localization methods used for stable automobile control by improving voice recognition rate in automobile environment and suggest how to improve their performances. Generally, sound source location estimation methods employ the TDOA algorithm, and there are two ways for it; one is to use a cross correlation function in the time domain, and the other is GCC-PHAT calculated in the frequency domain. Among these ways, GCC-PHAT is known to have stronger characteristics against echo and noise than the cross correlation function. This study compared the performances of the two methods above in automobile environment full of echo and vibration noise and suggested the use of a median filter additionally. We found that median filter helps both estimation methods have good performances and variance values to be decreased. According to the experimental results, there is almost no difference in the two methods' performances in the experiment using voice; however, using the signal of a song, GCC-PHAT is 10% more excellent than the cross correlation function in terms of the recognition rate. Also, when the median filter was added, the cross correlation function's recognition rate could be improved up to 11%. And in regarding to variance values, both methods showed stable performances.
