  • This paper reports on a study to increase the flexibility of previous TMDS(Train Monitoring and Diagnosis System) network communication in case of both multiple units and variable train sets. The previous TMDS network configuration has been applied using various field-BUS by the TMDS manufacturers using their own intrinsic method. But recently, there has been a demand for flexible train formations such as multiple units and variable train set formations, hence the TMDS had to be adapted to offer flexible network communication technology capability. Therefore, Hyundai-Rotem needed its intrinsic method of network configuration, and develop a network configuration method applicable to both multiple units and variable train set formations. The TMDS was integrated into the Irish Rail new Diesel Multiple Units from an early stage of the project and subsequently fully tested on a finished train.

A Configuration Design Sensitivity Analysis for Kinematically driven Mechanical Systems

  • A continuum-based configuration design sensitivity analysis method is developed for kinematically driven mechanical systems. The configuration design variable for mechanical systems is defined. The 3-1-3 Euler angle is employed as the orientation design variable. Kinematic admissibility conditions of configuration design change. Direct differentiation method is used to derive the governing equations of the design sensitivity. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method.

가변 형상 무한 궤도 차량의 성능 해석 및 설계 (Design and Performance Analysis of a Variable Configuration Tracked Vehicle)

  • A variable configuration tracked vehicle(VCTV) is developed to reduce turning energy and improve climbing ability for stairs. This mechanism has four track T-type frames. By changing the driving direction, each track T-type frame rotates to minimize the contact area with ground. It also has better performance than other VCTV in energy consumption of turning. Futhermore this mechanism is more stable than other VCTV on the rough terrain. When climbing stairs, each track T-type frame rotates to obtain a front attack angle and keep stability on steep stairs. The design parameters of components of track T-type frames are optimized to enhance the performance of climbing stairs. Performance indices include a stable angle, a climbing ability, a height of the vertical obstacle. In case that the overall length of the mechanism is 0.2m, it is required that the radius of the wheels should be 5mm and the length track contacted with he ground should be 0.09m to climb higher and steeper stairs.

  • The advanced piezoelectric ceramic composite actuator, which is called LIPCA with the FRP and the optimization of the laminate configuration, was performed to maximize the stress transfer and the fiber bridging effect. This study evaluated the effect of variable electric fields on the PZT characteristic, laminate configuration and fatigue characteristics under the resonance frequency, which meant the largest performance range and the changes of its interlaminar phase were also evaluated by stages. In conclusions, Comparing with the fatigue lift of intact LIPCA, the fatigue life of LIPCA embedded by the artificial delamination was decreased up to 50%. The micro void growth and the coalescence of epoxy were actively made at the interlaminar phase subject to the large tensile stress.

  • Characteristics of a Modified regenerative cycle gas turbine has been investigated. In the cycle, the turbine expansion is divided into two parts and the regenerator locates between them. Two types of mechanical design are assumed: two-shaft and single-shaft. In particular, optimal pressure ratio division between the high and low pressure turbines is evaluated for the single shaft configuration. The part load analyses have been carried out with the aid of off-design models. In addition to the general fuel only control, a variable speed control is assumed as the part load operating strategy of the single shaft configuration. Obvious advantage with the alternative cycle is observed in the variable speed operation of the single shaft design.

  • As a part of the configuration design expert system of machine tools, inference mechanisms are constructed in this paper. In addition to procedural inference, the method of multivariable inference is considered as an efficient approach to deal with the cases of highly coupled condition. We propose a generalized multi-variable inference procedure. The procedure is applied to the type selection module of the configuration design expert system of machine tools in order to demonstrate the efficiency and validity.

  • The propellant grain configuration is a design variable that determines the shape and performance of a solid rocket motor. Grain configuration variables have complicated effects on the motor performance; so the global optimization problem has to be solved in order to design the configuration variables. The grain performance has been analyzed by means of the grain burn-back and internal ballistic analysis, and the optimization technique searches for the configuration variables that satisfy the requirements. The deterministic and stochastic optimization techniques have been applied for the grain optimization, but the results are imperfect. In this study, the optimization design of the configuration variables has been performed using the hybrid optimization technique, which combines those two techniques. As a result, the hybrid optimization technique has proved to be efficient for the grain optimization design.

  • This paper presents a variable rate speech coding method with phonetic segmentation, called for PSVXC. Multiple access techniques that require efficient encoding of speech to achieve capacity improvements are currently emerging in the cellular telephone system. The variable rate speech coder have the reduced average data rate required to transmit conversational speech. Each frame of active speech is classified into one of four phonetic classes. A distinct coding configuration and bit-rate is applied to each category. And also a split vector quantization is used to accurately quantize the LPC information using LSP parameters.

  • This paper introduces a new type of driving mechanism for rescue robot that has a variable geometry single-track which satisfies the pre-conditions of rescue robot. This mechanism is a symmetric configuration that has dual directions and prepares against overturn. By using transformation, it can reduce the energy consumption in steering and rotating. And also it maximizes the ability to overcome obstacles, like steps. It is designed to make the size of robot compact and to have the low center of gravity in driving on steps. Finally, we optimized the design variables of components determining the shape of reverse-trapezoid frame to enhance the adaptability to 4 phases of climbing steps.

A New Driving Mechanism to Allow a Rescue Robot to Climb Stairs

  • There have been numerous studies directed toward the development of driving mechanisms for off-road mobility and rescue robots. To achieve surveillance, reconnaissance, and rescue, it is necessary for robots to have a driving mechanism that can handle off-road environments, We propose a new type of single-track driving mechanism with a variable geometry for a rescue robot, This mechanism has a symmetric configuration so that the robot can advance in two directions and also remain operable when overturned. By transforming its geometry, the robot can reduce energy consumption in steering and rotating as well as maximize its ability to climb obstacles such as stairs. The robot is also designed to have a compact size and low center of gravity to facilitate driving when on a set of stairs. In this paper, we analyzed the design parameters of the robot for the four phases of climbing stairs and determined the specifications needed to enhance its adaptability.
