This paper is concerned with extracting the diagnostic signature for motor-operated valves (MOV's) noninvasively. A torque estimator is developed and tested to obtain electical torque of the induction motors which are attached to the MOV's. Inverse filter is used to recover the gear meshing forces from the measured actuator housing vibration, which contain the gear rotation information. Frequency demodulation techniques are performed and an adaptive linear bandpass filter is implemented to improve signal-to-noise ratio. Finally, stand-alone valve experiments are carried out to validate the signature extraction scheme.

This paper deals with the design process for an outer-rotor-type surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) used in continuous variable valve timing (CVVT) systems in automobiles with internal combustion engines. When the same size, outer-rotor-type SPMSMs generate larger torque and more stable than inner-rotor-type SPMSMs. For the initial design, space harmonic analysis (SHA) is used. In order to minimize the cogging torque, an optimization was conducted using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). At the end of the paper, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is performed to verify the performance of the optimum model.
A wind power heat generation system that converts wind power directly to heat instead of electric power is considered in this study. The system consists of a wind turbine part and a heat generation part. The heat generation part is materialized by a hydraulic system including a hydraulic pump, a flow control valve, a hydraulic oil tank, etc. The flow control valve primarily converts hydraulic energy generated in the pump to heat energy. It should have a function of overspeed protection under excessive wind speeds. In this study, a novel flow control valve design is proposed for excellent flow control characteristics under excessive pump driving torque (excessive wind speed). The performance of the suggested valve is analyzed using numerical simulation.

By modulating the flow rate of $N_2O$ into a HR motor assembly, a control valve of a hybrid rocket engine plays a role to increase or decrease the thrust. In this study, the control valve has been designed to meet the requirements which are response speed(${\leq}$ about 1 second) and torque(${\geq}$ about $36N{\cdot}m$). Then, when analog signal 0~10V is applied, the situation where the valve is opened and closed has to be realized. To do this, the data values have to be entered into the actuator. Finally, the performance evaluation of the control valve has been performed to validate this product.

To develop a hydrogen fueled engine with external mixture which uses in high reliability, low cost and low pressure, the single cylinder research engine with MCVVT(Mechanical Continuous Variable Valve Timing) system is developed and its basic characteristics analyzed. The MCVVT developed has high reliability and the valve timing change is possible in wide range continuously. Though the mechanical loss due to MCVVT system is increased a little, back-fire suppression research for valve overlap period is no difficulty. It's also confirmed that the hydrogen-fueled engine has lower torque and is possible high lean burn. As fuel-air equivalence ratio is high, as thermal efficiency is remarkable increasing.

The Variable Valve Timing(VVT) system for high performance is a key technology used in newly developed engines. The system realizes higher torque, better fuel economy, and lower emissions by allowing an additional degree of freedom in valve timing during engine operation. In this study, a model-based control method is proposed to enable a fast and precise VVT control system that is robust with respect to manufacturing tolerances and aging. The VVT system is modeled by a third-order nonlinear state equation intended to account for nonlinearities of the system. Based on the model, a controller is designed for position control of the VVT system. The sliding mode theory is applied to controller design to overcome model uncertainties and unknown disturbances. The experimental results suggest that the proposed sliding mode controller is capable of improving tracking performance. In addition, the sliding mode controller is robust to battery voltage disturbance.

An experimental study has been conducted for the three-dimensional in-cylinder swirl flow under steady conditions. Velocity fields are measured by using an LDV at various valve lifts. Effects of geometry of inlet ports on swirl flows are investigated for standard and helical ports. Swirl distributions evaluated from velocity measurements are compared with those obtained from an impulse torque swirl meter. Results show that the helical port generates more intensive swirl than the standard one but it causes red- uction in air flow coefficient. At the lower valve lift, no significant difference is observ- ed in non-dimensional swirl values between two ports because of limited pre-swirl effect, while it becomes significant as the valve lift increases.

An experimental study presents characteristics of combustion in a combustion chamber by port deactivation valve for economy and emissions standards. In order to use combustion properties data it is necessary to build some data base, which use cylinder pressure sensor, etc. Port deactivation valve has been developed to satisfy requirement of achieving sufficient swirl generation to improve the combustion. A feasibility and necessity of combustion pressure based cylinder spark timing control has been examined. So, this was obtained the Coefficient of Variation(COV) and the mass-burned(MFB). The characteristics of pressure ratio fraction is similar to that of mass-burned fraction. Using the results of the test, the effects of the combustion chamber can be improved combustion stability by port deactivation.

The purpose of this study is to develop the improvement method of MOV(Motor Operated Valve) operability without major modification or change of MOV which needs a great expense and manpower. We studied valve stem lubrication, stem packing thrust and actuator control switch which could give an major effect to MOV operability, and found the some consequences. First, the stem/stem-nut friction coefficient and stem factor is significantly effected by stem lubrication state. Second, the measured packing thrust value is appeared higer than the design value for tested valves and the preparation of optimal value selection criteria is needed. Finally, optimization of MOV control switch is another major factor for MOV operability and structual integrity.
This paper presents a tribological study on the failure cases of automatic transmission components in a passenger car. The automatic transmission system is composed of torque converter, clutch, brake, planetary gear, and valve body controlling oil pressure of an automatic transmission fluid. The most largest influence components in an automatic transmission are a torque converter and clutch plate in which are influenced by a wear and torque converting energy loss. The failure case study of an automatic transmission indicates that the tribological design and maintenance technologies should be considered as a key design concept. This means that the failure and power energy loss come from the friction, wear and a oil leakage of an automatic transmission, which is related to the oil seal and O-ring seal failures.
