In various industries, thin film coatings are used to improve friction and wear characteristics. Various types of tribotesters are used to evaluate the friction and wear characteristics of such thin film coatings. In this study, we fabricated a micro-tribotester and Tribo-scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to compare the friction and wear characteristics of copper (Cu) coatings under an atmospheric pressure and a vacuum condition, respectively. The reliability of the different types of tribotesters was evaluated by performing calibrations for the sensor to measure the friction forces and normal loads. Using the two different types of devices, the friction and wear tests are conducted at the same experimental conditions excluding environment conditions such as the atmospheric pressure and vacuum condition. The friction coefficient at the vacuum condition is lower than at the atmospheric pressure. This difference in friction characteristics is due to the fact that wear phenomena occur differently according to the atmospheric pressure and vacuum condition. At the atmospheric pressure, the abrasive wear is the main wear mechanism. At the vacuum condition, the adhesive wear is the main wear mechanism. The reason for the difference in the wear mechanism of the Cu coating at the atmospheric pressure and the vacuum condition is that the oxidation phenomenon, which does not appear at the vacuum condition, occurs at the atmospheric pressure; therefore, the characteristics of the Cu coating change accordingly.
The numerical analysis of the negative pressure porous gas bearings is presented. The pressure distribution is calculated using the finite difference method. The Reynolds equation and Darcy's equation are solved simultaneously. The air bearing stiffness and damping are evaluated using the perturbation method. Rectangular uniform grid is employed to model the bearing. The vacuum preloading is considered. The pressure in the vacuum pocket is assumed to be a constant negative pressure. The total load, stiffness, damping and flow rate are calculated fur several geometrical configurations and several values of negative pressure. It is found that too large vacuum pocket can result in negative total force.
A vacuum pressure-difference technique for making a nano-precision replica is investigated for various applications. Master patterns for replication were fabricated using a nano-replication printing (nRP) process. In the nRP process, any picture and pattern can be replicated from a bitmap figure file in the range of several micrometers with resolution of 200nm. A liquid-state monomer is solidified by two-photon absorption (TPA) induced by a femto-second laser according to a voxel matrix scanning. After polymerization, the remaining monomers were removed simply by using ethanol droplets. And then, a gold metal layer of about 30nm thickness was deposited on the fabricated master patterns prior to polydimethylsiloxane molding for preventing bonding between the master and the polydimethylsiloxane mold. A few gold particles attached on the polydimethylsiloxane stamp during detaching process were removed by a gold selecting etchant. After fabricating the polydimethylsiloxane mold, a nano-precision polydimethylsiloxane replica was reproduced. More precise replica was produced by the vacuum pressure-difference technique that is proposed in this paper. Through this study, direct patterning on a glass plate, replicating a polydimethylsiloxane mold, and reproducing polydimethylsiloxane replica are demonstrated with a vacuum pressure-difference technique for various micro/nano-applications.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the plaque removal effects of vacuum oral cleaner developed for the patients with limited mobility with those of manual toothbrushes and high pressure injection oral cleaner (dental water jet). Meterials and methods : Thirty human subjects were measured with Patient Hygiene Performance index (PHP index) and O'Leary index before and after the use of toothbrush, high pressure injection oral cleaner and vacuum oral cleaner. These three different oral hygiene methods were conducted with seven-day intermittence. Then the statistical analysis was carried out to define plaque removal rate of three different oral hygiene methods (${\alpha}=.05$). Results : According to the efficacy analysis of plaque removal before and after the oral cleaning using each of three methods, significant reduction in plaque after the treatment compared to the previous state when using toothbrush, high pressure injection oral cleaner, and vacuum oral cleaner was observed (P < 0.001). PHP index of tooth brushing was higher than that of the high pressure injection oral cleaner, while PHP index of vacuum oral cleaner did not show significant difference from either of the other two methods. There was no significance difference in O'Leary index among the three methods. Conclusion : Effect of plaque removal using the vacuum oral cleaner is comparable to that of manual tooth brush or high pressure injection oral cleaner, so it will be helpful for self-oral hygiene care of the patients with limited mobility.
An experiment was conducted to know the safranine impregnation distance from surface to inward using 6 different hardwood species. During impregnation, 3 parameters were applied-vacuum, pressure and soaking time. Only vacuum treatment did not increase the permeability of wood. Vacuum followed by pressure increased the penetration depth of safranine in radial, tangential and longitudinal direction. Longitudinal penetration was found easy to impregnate. Comparing with radial and tangential direction, radial penetration was found easy. There was a striking difference among sapwood and heartwood permeability. Safranine input depth was found highest in diffused porous wood rather than in ring porous wood. At increased vacuum and pressure, safranine penetration was found easy.
A mathematical model and control laws for an Electronic-Vacuum Booster (EVB) for application to vehicle cruise control will be presented. Also this paper includes performance test result of EVB and vehicle cruise control experiments. The pressure difference between the vacuum chamber and the apply chamber is controlled by a PWM-solenoid-valve. Since the pressure at the vacuum chamber is identical to that of the engine intake manifold, the output of the electronic-vacuum booster Is sensitive to engine speed. The performance characteristics of the electronic-vacuum booster have been investigated via computer simulations and vehicle tests. The mathematical model of the electronic-vacuum booster developed in this study and a two-state dynamic engine model have been used in the simulations. It has been shown by simulations and vehicle tests that the EVB-cruise control system can provide a vehicle with good distance control performance in both high speed and low speed stop and go driving situations.
There are various methods in the flat panel display manufacture. The cost reduction effect is very big in case of using the screen printing method. The screen printing method is much used in the process of forming PDP barrier and can apply to the process of arranging the pillars for maintaining the vacuum gap of the vacuum glazing panel. The pillar which is one of the core elements for comprising vacuum glazing maintains the vacuum gap overcoming the vacuum pressure difference with the atmospheric pressure generated in vacuum glazing. At the same time, the deformation phenomenon by vacuum pressure is relived. In this paper, by using FEM about three considered in the pillar design and arrangement kinds of limiting factors, the simulation was performed. The pillar optimum arrangement method at within the maximum allowable tensile stress and heat transfer coefficients according to the arrangement try to be presented based upon the analyzed result data review and this validity tries to be verified by FEM.
To establish the calibration system of hot cathode ionization gauges as transfer gauges, researches were concentrated on measurements of the pressure ratio, the orifice conductance as well as the porous plug conductance of a ultrahigh vacuum standards system. Two ionization gauges obtained from two different vendors were calibrated in the pressure range of $7{times}10^{-7}$ to $4{times}10^{-3}$ Pa by injecting argon gas into the standards system. As a result, a 4% difference was revealed in non-linearity of the extractor ionization gauge due to the pressure difference between high vacuum and ultrahigh vacuum, and 3% for the stabil ionization gauge. It has been understood that the extractor ionization gauge is able to be used within the 10% error, the uncertainty of the extractor ionization gauge, if properly regulating the sensitivity of the gas. The stabil ionization gauge was also proved to be useable in the maximum error margin of 4% without the control of the gas sensitivity.

For the sea-level performance test of rocket motor designed to operate in the upper atmosphere, ejectors with no induced secondary flow are generally used, which serves dual purposes of evacuating the test cell and performing as a supersonic exhaust diffuser (SED). The main concern of this research is to simulate starting transients in order to visualize evolution of internal shock structures in SED with different initial cell (vacuum chamber) pressures. RANS code with low Reynolds $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model was employed for these computations. Numerical results were compared with the pressure measurements previously performed [Proceedings of 2004 Annual Conference, KIMST], and showed good agreements with pressure-time history of measured data. In the case of low vacuum chamber pressure, abrupt impingement of the under-expanded supersonic jet from the nozzle onto the diffuser wall was observed, whereas initial impingement point was located downstream and moved slowly upstream in the case of non-vacuum chamber pressure. In spite of initially dissimilar evolution of shock structures, iso-mach contour revealed that the steady shock structures had little difference except the location of flow separation and normal shock.

Vacuum-assisted air gap membrane distillation (V-AGMD) has the potential to achieve higher flux and productivity than conventional air gap membrane distillation (AGMD). Nevertheless, there is not much information on technical aspects of V-AGMD operation. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the effect of membrane deformation on flux in V-AGMD operation. Experiments were carried out using a bench-scale V-AGMD system. Statistical models were applied to understand the flux behaviors. Statistical models based on MLR, GNN, and MLFNN techniques were developed to describe the experimental data. Results showed that the flux increased by up to 4 times with the application of vacuum in V-AGMD compared with conventional AGMD. The flux in both AGMD and V-AGMD is affected by the difference between the air gap pressure and the saturation pressure of water vapor, but their dependences were different. In V-AGMD, the membranes were found to be deformed due to the vacuum pressure because they were not fully supported by the spacer. As a result, the deformation reduced the effective air gap width. Nevertheless, the rejection and LEP were not changed even if the deformation occurred. The flux behaviors in V-AGMD were successfully interpreted by the GNN and MLFNN models. According to the model calculations, the relative impact of the membrane deformation ranges from 10.3% to 16.1%.
