The main objectives were to investigate the suitability of CaO crucible for melting TiAl alloys and to develop investment mold for investment casting of TiAl alloys. TiAl alloy specimen were prepared by plasma arc furnace under argon atmosphere. After melting of TiAl alloy using CaO crucible, the results showed that there is little contamination of oxygen in the TiAl bulk. Conventional vacuum induction furnaces can be readily adaptable to produce cast parts of TiAl without high skilled techniques. The determination of optical metallography and microhardness profiles in investment cast TiAl alloy rods has allowed the gradation of the relative thermal stability of the oxides examined. The molds used for the present study were $ZrO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO stabilized $ZrO_2$ and $ZrSiO_4$. Even although high temperature of mold preheating, $Al_2O_3$ mold is a promising mold material for investment casting of TiAl alloys in terms of thermal stability, cost and handling strength. It is important to take thermal stability and preheating temperature of mold into consideration for investment casting of TiAl alloys.

In this study, we investigated morphology of nanotube and micropore on the Ti-25Nb-xHf alloys with Hf contents after anodization. Ti-25Nb-xHf ternary alloys contained from (0~15) wt.% Hf contents were manufactured by vacuum arc-melting furnace. The obtained ingots were homogenized in an argon atmosphere at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 12h and then water quenching. The specimens were cut from ingots to 3mm thickness and first ground and polished using SiC paper (grades from 100 to 2000). 2steps anodization treatments on Ti-25Nb-xHf alloys were carried out at room temperature for experiments. Micro-pore formation was performed in Ca+P mixed solution at 265V for 3min. After that, nanotube formation was in 1M $H_3PO_4$ electrolytes containing 0.8wt.% NaF solutionat 10V for 120min. Morphologies of micropore and nanotube depended on the Hf content in Ti-25Nb-xZr ternary system.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation of Ti-25Ta-xHf alloy in electrolyte containing Ca and P for dental implants was investigated using various experimental techniques. Ti-25Ta-xHf (x=0 and 15 wt.%) alloys were manufactured in an arc-melting vacuum furnace. Micropores were formed in PEO films on Ti-25Ta-xHf alloys in 0.15 M calcium acetate monohydrate + 0.02 M calcium glycerophosphate at 240 V, 270 V and 300 V for 3 min, respectively. The microstructure of Ti-25Ta-xHf alloys changed from (${\alpha}^{\prime}+{\alpha}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$) phase to (${\alpha}^{{\prime}{\prime}}+{\beta}$) phase by addition of Hf. As the applied potential increased, the number of pore and the area ratio of occupied by micro-pore decreased, whereas the pore size increased. The anatase phase increase as the applied potential increased. Also, the crystallite size of anatase-$TiO_2$ can be controlled by applied voltage.
Titanium sponge is industrially produced by the Kroll process. In order to understand the importance of the emerging smelting and recycling process, it is necessary to review the conventional production process of titanium. Therefore this paper provides a general overview of the conventional titanium manufacturing system mainly by the Kroll process. The Kroll process can be divided into four sub-processes as follows: (1) Chlorination of raw TiO2 with coke, by the fluidized bed chlorination or molten salt chlorination (2) Magnesium reduction of TiCl4 and vacuum distillation of MgCl2 and Mg by reverse U-type or I-type with reduction-distillation integrated retorts (3) Electrolysis process of MgCl2 by monopolar cells or multipolar cells to electrolyze into chlorine gas and Mg. (4) Crushing and melting process in which sponge titanium is crushed and then melted in a vacuum arc furnace or an electron beam furnace Although the apparatus and procedures have improved over the past 80 years, the Kroll process is the costly and time-consuming batch operation for the reduction of TiCl4 and the separation of MgCl2.
The corrosion resistance and cytotoxicity behavior of Ti alloys were studied as a function of Nb contents(3wt.%Nb, 20wt.%Nb, 40wt.%Nb). Ti-Nb alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace and then rolled to 50% reduction ratio after homogenized at 105$0^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs. The corrosion resistance of Ti-Nb alloys were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization test in the 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCI solution. Biocompatibility of Ti-Nb alloys was evaluated by cytotoxicity test. The results can be summarized as follows 1) The microstructure change from equiaxial to acicular and the increased $\beta$ phase in Ti-Nb alloys were obtained as the Nb content increased. 2) For the corrosion test in the solution of 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCI, the corrosion behavior of Ti-Nb alloys was similar to ASTM grade 2 CP Ti. 3) For the cytotoxicity test, Ti-Nb alloys showed excellent biocompatibility compared to ASTM grade 2 CP Ti, 316L STS and Co-Cr alloys.
After casting button-type small ingots of ternary Fe-Mn-S alloys which had three different Mn/S ratios (1, 5 and 70) in a vacuum arc furnace, the effect of the ratio on the sulfide formation was investigated. In case of the Mn/S ratio of 1, if alloy composition was located in an iron-rich corner on a Fe-Mn-S ternary phase diagram, only duplex MnS-FeS sulfide films were observed in the grain boundary. If the alloy composition was located in the miscibility gap area of the phase diagram, primary globular dendritic sulfides and dendritic sulfide slags were generated within the grain and tubular monotectic sulfides were also detected in the grain boundary. When the Mn/S ratio was 5, if the alloy composition was in the iron-rich corner, only bead-like sulfides were generated. On the other hand, if the composition was in the miscibility gap area, globular dendritic sulfides and dendritic sulfide slags were generated in the form of primary sulfide inclusions and rod-like eutectic sulfides were observed in the grain boundary. Especially, if the contents of Mn and S increased more in the miscibility gap area of the phase diagram, primary globular sulfides containing iron intrusions were observed. In case of Mn/S ratio of 70, if the contents of Mn and S was decreased in the Fe corner of the phase diagram, only bead-like sulfides were observed in the grain boundary. Despite the composition was outside the miscibility gap area of the phase diagram, if the contents of Mn and S increased, clusters of fine sulfide particles as well as fine spherical primary monophase sulfides were observed in the grain boundary.
The use of titanium alloys as biomaterials is increasing due to their superior biocompatibility and enhanced corrosion resistance compared to conventional stainless steels and cobalt-based alloys. Ti-6Al-4V ($\alpha+\beta$type) alloy instead of pure titanium ($\alpha$type) is being widely used as biomaterials has some characteristics such as high fatigue strength, tensile strength and corrosion resistance. But it has been reported recently that the vanadium element expresses cytotoxicity and the aluminium element is related with dementia of Alzheimer type and neurotoxicity. In order to overcome their detrimental effects, $\beta$-phase stabilizer Nb was chosen in the present study. This paper was described the influence of phase changes of Ti-Nb alloys on mechanical properties. Ti-3wt.%Nb($\alpha$type),Ti-20wt.%Nb($\alpha+\beta$type) and Ti-40wt.%Nb($\beta$type) alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace. The specimens were homogenized at 1050$^{\circ}C$ for 24hr and were then hot rolled to 50% reduction. Each alloys were solution heat treated at $\beta$ zone and $\alpha+\beta$ zone after homogenization and then were aged. The mechanical properties of Ti alloys were analysed by hardness test, tensile test, elongation test and SEM test. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) The higher hardness value of $\alpha+\beta$type alloy was obtained compared to the, $\alpha,\beta$type alloys. 2) The aged treated showed better hardness compared to the solution heat treated, homogenized. 3) In the case of solution and aging treatment at $\beta$region, the $\alpha+\beta$type alloy showed the most highest tensile strength and $\beta$type alloy showed the best elongation.

Silicon is commercially prepared by the reaction of high-purity silica with wood, charcoal, and coal, in an electric arc furnace using carbon electrodes, so called the metallurgical refining process, which produces ~98% pure Si (MG-Si). This can be further purified to solar grade silicon (SoG-Si) by various techniques. The most problematic impurity elements are B and P because of their high segregation coefficients. In this study, we explored the possibility of the using Cat-CVD for Si purification. The existing hot-wire CVD was modified to accommodate the catalyzer and the heating source. Mo boat (1.5 cm ${\times}$ 1 cm ${\times}$ 0.2 cm) was used as a heating source. Commercially available Si was purchased from Nilaco corporation (~99% pure). This powder was kept in the Mo-boat and heated to the purification temperature. In addition to the purification by cat-CVD technique, other methods such as thermal CVD, plasma enhanced CVD, vacuum annealing was also tried. It is found that the impurities are reduced to a great extent when treated with cat-CVD method.
This study is focusing on the improvement of problems of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. A new Ti based alloy, Ti-15Sn-4Nb, have designed to examine any possibility of improving the mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Specimens of Ti alloys were melted in vacuum arc furnace and homogenized at $100^{\circ}C$ for 24h. All specimens were solution treated at $812^{\circ}C$ and aged at $500^{\circ}C$ for 10h. The corrosion resistance of Ti alloys was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization test and immersion test inl%Lactic acid solutions. Ti-15Sn-4Nb system alloys showed Widmanstatten microstructure after solution treatment which is typical microstructure of ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ type Ti alloys. Analysing the corrosion resistance of Ti alloys, it was concluded that the passive films of Ti-15Sn-4Nb system alloys are more stable than that of Ti-6Al-4V alloys. Also, the corrosion resistance of Ti-15Sn-4Nb system alloys was improved with adding elements, Hf. It was analysed that the passive film of the Ti-15Sn-4Nb alloy which was formed in air atmosphere was consisted of TiO2, SnO and NbO through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) analysis.

In this study, fractured surface morphology and mechanical properties of Ni-Cr-Mo alloys with various contents of Mo for dental material use have been evaluated by mechanical test. The alloys used were Ni-13Cr-xMo alloys with Mo contents of 4, 6, 8, and 10 wt.%, prepared by using a vacuum arc-melting furnace. Ni-13Cr-xMo alloys were used for mechanical test without heat treatment. The phase and microstructure of alloys using an X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical microscopy (OM) were evaluated. To examine the mechanical properties of alloys according to microstructure changes, the tensile test and the hardness test were carried out using tensile tester. To understand the mechanism of Mo addition to Ni-Cr alloy on mechanical property, the morphology and fractured surfaces of alloys were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). As a result, 79Ni-13Cr-8Mo alloy was verified that the tensile strength and the hardness were better than others. Varying Mo content, the changes of microstructures of alloys were identified by OM and SEM and that of 79Ni-13Cr-8Mo alloy was proved fabricated well. Microstructures of alloys were changed depending on Mo content ratio. It has been observed that 8% alloy had the most suitable mechanical property for dental alloy.
