  • The metal transfer phenomenon of the pulsed-GMAW is simulated by formulating the electromagnetic force incorporated with the Volume of Fluid algorithm. The free surface profiles, pressure and velocity distributions within the drop are computed numerically. Axial velocity and acceleration generated during peak current period are found to have a significant effect on drop detachment. Therefore, the accelerated inertia force becomes one of important factors affecting metal transfer in the pulsed-GMAW. When the pulse current parameters are selected properly, the molten drop is detached just after current pulse, and the operating range of the pulsing frequency increases with higher peak current and duty cycle. Calculated operating ranges show reasonably good agreements with the available experimental data.

  • Interface tracking of two phase is significant to analyze multi-phase phenomena. The VOF(Volume of Fluid) and level set are well known interface tracking method. However, they have limitations to solve compressible flow and incompressible flow at the same time. CIP(Cubic Interpolate Propagation) method is appropriate for considering compressible and incompressible flow at once by solving the governing equation which is divided up into advection and non-advection term. In this article, we analyze the droplet impingement according to various We number using improved CIP method which treats nonlinear term once more comparison with original CIP method. Furthermore, we compare spread radius after droplet impingement on the wall with the experimental data and original CIP original CIP method, and it reduces the mass conservation error which is generated in the numerical analysis comparison with original CIP method.

  • The main aim of this study is to investigate the effect of berm breakwater on wave run-up. A total of 200 numerical analysis tests have been carried out in this paper to investigate the effect of berm width, wave height, and wave period on the wave run-up, using an integrating technique of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Direct application of Navier Stokes equations within the berm width has been used to provide a more reliable approach for studying the wave run-up over berm breakwaters. A well tested Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) scheme was adopted for numerical computations. The computational results were compared with theoretical data to validate the model outputs. Numerical results showed that the simulation method can provide accurate estimations for wave run-up over berm breakwaters. It was found that the wave run-up may be decreased by increasing the berm width up to about 36 percent. Furthermore, the wave run-up may increase by increasing the wave height and wave period up to about 53 and 36 percent, respectively. These results may convince the engineers to use this model for design of berm breakwater in actual scale by calculating the Reynolds numbers.

  • The paper provides some results of a new procedure to analyze the hydrodynamic aspects of the interactions between maritime emerged breakwaters and waves by integrating CAD and CFD. The structure is modeled in the numerical domain by overlapping individual three-dimensional elements (Tetrapods), very much like the real world or physical laboratory testing. Flow of the fluid within the interstices among concrete blocks is evaluated by integrating the RANS equations. The aim is to investigate the reliability of this approach as a design tool. Therefore, for the results' validation, the numerical run-up and reflection effects on virtual breakwater were compared with some empirical formulae and some similar laboratory tests. Here are presented the results of a first simple validation procedure. The validation shows that, at present, this innovative approach can be used in the breakwater design phase for comparison between several design solutions with a significant minor cost.

  • A fishway is a structure on or around artificial and natural barriers, such as dams, locks and waterfalls, to help fishes' natural migration. In this paper, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, termed SNUFOAM is used to analyze vertical hydraulic characteristic of rollway of fishway. Volume-of-fluid (VOF) method was used to handle free-surface. It is important to determine the factors influencing flow characteristics in fishway because fish use directional information from the flow characteristics to navigate through fishway. Fishway was modeled in 2-D and the influence of the stream velocity, slope, and weir height of fishway was tested. In results, the transition Reynolds number was $2{\times}10^5{\sim}3{\times}10^5$.

  • An efficient solution algorithm for simulating free surface problem is presented. Navier-Stokes equations for variable density incompressible flow are employed as the governing equation on Cartesian meshes. In order to describe the free surface motion efficiently, VOF(Volume Of Fluid) method utilizing THINC(Tangent of Hyperbola for Interface Capturing) scheme is employed. The most time-consuming part of the current free surface flow simulations is the solution step of the linear system, derived by the pressure Poisson equation. To solve a pressure Poisson equation efficiently, the PCG(Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient) method is utilized. This study showed that the proper application of the preconditioner is the key for the efficient solution of the free surface flow when its pressure Poisson equation is solved by the CG method. To demonstrate the efficiency of the current approach, we compared the convergence histories of different algorithms for solving the pressure Poisson equation.

  • The paper presents the numerical analysis of wave run-up over rubble-mound breakwaters covered by antifer units using a technique integrating Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. Direct application of Navier-Stokes equations within armour blocks, is used to provide a more reliable approach to simulate wave run-up over breakwaters. A well-tested Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) Volume of Fluid (VOF) code (Flow-3D) was adopted for CFD computations. The computed results were compared with experimental data to check the validity of the model. Numerical results showed that the direct three dimensional (3D) simulation method can deliver accurate results for wave run-up over rubble mound breakwaters. The results showed that the placement pattern of antifer units had a great impact on values of wave run-up so that by changing the placement pattern from regular to double pyramid can reduce the wave run-up by approximately 30%. Analysis was done to investigate the influences of surface roughness, energy dissipation in the pores of the armour layer and reduced wave run-up due to inflow into the armour and stone layer.

  • In this study, we conducted resistance and propulsion performance test of ship composed of the Resistance Test, Propeller Open Water Test and Self Propulsion Test using the CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). We used commercial RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equation) solver, as a calculating tool. The unstructured grids were used in a bow and stern of ship, having complex shape, for a convenience of generating grids, and the structured grids were adopted in a central hull and rest of hull having a relatively simple shape which is called hybrid grid method. In addition, The sliding mesh method was adopted to rotate a propeller directly in the Propeller Open Water and Self Propulsion Test. The Resistance Test and Self Propulsion Test were calculated using Volume of Fluid (VOF) model and considering a free surface. And all The three cases were applied realizable k-epsilon model as the turbulence model. The results of calculations were verified for the suitability of calculations by comparing MOERI's EFD results.
